This black and white Cold War era indoctrination war film titled “The Soviet Army / Armor” was produced in 1955 by the United States War Office as part of two larger series, "Armies of the World" and a subseries "The Soviet Army", both of which provided Army and reserve units a more holistic picture of the Soviet Union’s capabilities and tactics. The film provides an overview of the Soviet Union’s armored vehicle divisions, and starts with a brief history of Soviet armor production from the 1930’s to 1945. Using both Soviet and German training footage, the film mainly focuses on the Soviet flagship tank, the T-34, outlining its strengths, weaknesses, and its role in Soviet tactics. The film concludes with a brief description of the Soviet armored vehicles showcased in the Moscow Victory Parade of 1945, featuring the new Soviet JS-3/IS-3 tanks.

The only issue with this movie that it shows the state of affairs of the Soviet armor as it used to be at the end of 1945. The movie, itself, was made in 1955, thus, it was outdated by 10 years! None of shown BT or KV tanks were any longer in service. At the same time, the most important Soviet T-54 tank which had been mass-produced since 1946 is totally missing.
This is a GEM ! 😃
Glad you saw it and appreciate it -- and yes, glad we found it! This one was rescued from a dumpster at a U.S. Army base.

I joined the British Army in 1973. This is what we were facing. Wonderful content. Thank you.
You didn't get sent to the desert in 73? Figured the crown was more worried about the horsemen in the sandbox, than cossacks in siberia at that time.

"КВ-76" и "КВ-85" - не совсем корректные названия. В качестве КВ-76 показан танк КВ-1. А вот КВ-85 существовал, но выпущен только малой партией, и потом модернизирован до ИС
Ну это как первую модель Т-34 иногда называют Т-34-76, хотя она так не звалась.
t54/t55: "wait till they get load of me"
The T54 had been in production for five years before this film was produced - thousands were already in Soviet armoured divisions. Its amzing the film passes over it as it was the tank the film's audience were most likely to face. All the weak points they pointed to in this film did not actually exist in the T-54. Though the film failed to point out the worst weakness of all Soviet tanks, right up to the T-90 - truly terrible ergonomics that meant low rate of fire, low range and extremely low crew endurance.
@@kenoliver8913 Not actually amazing since, despite the T-54 being present in many Soviet armored formations as you said, the west didn't know about it until it was used to suppress the Hungarian uprising in 1956.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous CZcams users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.

The narrator dismisses the uber "slow" KV and then adds that in WW2 the tankers were "well saturated with political doctrine to make them well oriented tools of the communist state..." as he ironically delivers well saturated propaganda himself to his young Army captive audience... Of course when one is INSIDE either system, one doesn't notice the 24/7 propaganda without taking a step back and knowing a bit more. In a sense, we've all been trained as TOOLS from an early age.. In the cold war, we watched cartoons with the evil Boris and Natascha in childhood and until the 1990s, their women were presented as thick old brutes on tractors. It's laughable when one looks back. --- Of course there are lies still being swallowed by even educated people today because the lifetime of propaganda prepared them for this new batch now.
The big difference being that until fall of the Soviet Union and later when internet became widespread you could not really see for yourself so people ended up believing in stereotypes. Now you can take out your phone go to Chatroulette and speak with any person from any country you wish
I love that statement overloaded and poorly maintained , it sounds like 2022
But Soviet Union was bigger and their technology was more on par with Western stuff than todays Russia.
@boerekable in terms of tanks, ussr actually outmatched western vehicles by far until the mid late 80s
@@a.t6066 Easily disproven by for example Yom-Kippur war. Soviet Union later claimed they delivered just monkey models to their Arab partners which was obviously BS, but a lot of people bought it at the time.
But of course they were as easy to destroy as today, and Soviet Union could have replenished their stocks.
@boerekable they did deliver monkey models. Where were the t-72s, t-64, and t-10 during the Yom yippur war? Thats right, they weren't there. t-55s, t-62s, and is-3s werent exactly the newest tanks at the time...
@@a.t6066 The USSR was in military technology wise on par with the Western nations up until the early 80s. To say though the Western powers had no tank which could match the t-72 is just ridiculous.

I trained and led anti-tank hunterkiller teams post Vietnam War. Essentially we trained using the same tactics the Germans used during WW2, both different by having more modern antitank weapons - and the same using the old weapons too. Tanks burn.
@paladin danse almost all war time production T34s were junk.
Rushed production lead to heat treat to 600 bernell while everyone else was 300-400 this lead to the tanks hulls cracking and or devastating amounts of spall killing the crew, some rounds wouldn't even penetrate because the armor was so hard but it would still crack the hull.
Russians didn't install radios in all their tanks until like 1943 or 44.
They were just good enough and numerous enough.
NATO was heavily reliant on the Wehrmacht. Postwar, to weaken the other side, we relied on the most sadistic genocidal war criminals (US Army Intelligence words) from western Ukraine to keep the idea of "Ukraine" as a separate nation alive. We harbored them in eastern American cities (and a few in west Germany and England) and shielded them from prosecution. Guess it all paid off decades later with the situation today...
@@dleechristy as if Ukraine aka the Kievan Rus haven't been a separate nation forever lol
@@hasanhaskovic4307 Yes Rus, you fail, Ukraine is a modern invention, areas occupied by Catholic Poland and Austria for too long
@@hasanhaskovic4307 Why are you lying? "Kievan Rus" is a historical term coined in the 19th century. Rus is Russia on all maps
Did that narrator just disrespect a lend/lease Universal Carrier? Makes me so angry I can hardly see out of my eyes...
Totally agree! And where is the spectacular British Mark V tank (1918)? Why is it not shown? Soviets captured a few of those during their Civil War.
Someone needs to get this film to the Ukrainian army so that they will know what they need to do when Russia sends their last wave of armor against them. I assume that none of the WWI tanks have survived.
you mean when ukraine sends the donated t55s from slovenia against russia, i see some still belive ukraine is winning , dear lord...
You need to be very careful when you discuss Soviet junk. You can't depend solely on the top line figure. For instance, when Russia sent the T 62s into combat oh those many months ago, they were the M variant which was the last variant. Why these relics did not have reactive armor they at least had some composite armor. This at least put them nearly on par with their T 72 A replacements. The T 55s to which you refer are not something that I would care to get into but are a modernized version of that tank type that has modern features such as reactive armor which makes them much more survivable than any T62 known to man. There is no indication that Ukraine has actually used these in combat. They may be using them for rear guard action such as guarding check points or as some sort of emergency reserve if things do get desperate. Another good example of being careful about evaluating Soviet/Russian junk types is the T 80. While i came after the T72 in introduction it was discontinued, and Russia went back to making T 72s as their main battle tank. So, there are T 72 variants that have superior features to T 80s. If you want some real laughs, Russia has been seen to be sending some T 62 As to Ukraine. This may not be too bad if they are kept in rear area roles but taking one of these museum pieces into battle would be suicidal. Not only do they lack reactive armor, but they also lack any composite armor. Basically, they really are little more than the T 55s for which you rightly have no respect. They are simply rolled steel tanks like you would find on any WWII battlefield.
You are clearly brainwashed. The Ukrainian army is getting slaughtered and without Western donations they would not have an army left. Russians havent lost that many tanks, especially since April.
👆🤡
Ah. Nothing like orc eloquence. When faced with facts, they present the middle finger. This may explain their great battlefield exploits in this war. You must be an orc commander of some sort.
"The KV-1was an easy target ". Nope. Maybe easy to hit, but not to knock out!
I recommend the book, "Hitler Moves East" by Paul Carrel. (I may have spelled the name wrong) In one of the first encounters with a KV-1, a KV was blocking a road in front of a bridge. The Germans kept firing their 37mm AT guns at it to no effect. The Germans nicknamed the 37mm "The Door knocker" about this time. They had to bring up an 88mm to destroy the KV. When they went up to the knocked out KV, they counted 72 37mm rounds stuck in its armor.
Propaganda --- But note the narrator talking about their tank training being "communist" propaganda. Ironic as he was spewing nonsense like this
You dont have to pen the armor to knock a tank out though. This whole film is testament to that.
Everyone cites the example of that one KV that withstood the 37mm, not realizing that the tank was already immobilzed and near useless. You dont want to be in ANY vehicle that has been hit 72 times and has infantry crawling all over it.
KV did what it was supposed to do, as did the T-34...that being cheap and expendable.
@@darrenprong2632 I suspect that the KV that "just stood there" had a crew that wouldn't retreat because of draconian "no retreat" orders. "You have little chance with the Germans & none with us". I highly recommend Mark Feltons "KV-1 Last Stand Leningrad". Four KVs knocked out fourty three German panzers that were trapped on a causeway. All the KVs survived. The lead KV took 156 hits "without being disabled or penetrated". This, of course was in 1941 & things would change. I would send a link but am to stupid to know how. It is very interesting & only about 10 minutes long.
@@darrenprong2632 Actually, it's only 5 minutes long. I just Googled it. It's highly interesting. "Mark Felton KV-1 Last Stand Leningrad". I'll leave you be. Have fun.

What we don't see here is all the Allied food, ammo, explosives, gas and trucks fueling that victory.
@@PrimarchX Either way.. Without Soviet Manpower the U.S would of struggled fighting against both Japan and the Germans. Soviets lost more than 20 Million people in order to defeat the Nazis. I have huge respect for them.
@@supernovaexpress5241 Yes, we hear that frequently. However it needs to also be told that their victory would not of been possible without Allied support. Sort of like recognizing the French for their support of the American Revolution. However we historically don't hear that recognition due to political bias or lack of knowledge.
@@PrimarchX Of course I'm not denying the fact that support was needed to defeat the Germans. Just that the Soviets put in the most effort into defeating them.
@@PrimarchX Fuel and trucks certainly, but I doubt the foor or ammo contributons were that significant. Especially the ammo. The russians used completely different ammo to any of the western allies.

At least the Ruskie tanks have the cook off process perfected.

Ukrainian farmers fought for the Red Army. However western Ukrainian nationalists allied with Nazis to kill partisans and Jews, and then after the SS and Abwehr were destroyed, found a new sponsor in the USA.
Soviet military strategy relied on a war of attrition. USSR had the numbers. It can work but can mean large losses in men & material. Today however it seems Russia suffers from low morale, poor training & corruption.
Corruption is not a Russian invention. Just look at the American system of lobbying and you'll understand that the Russian corruption is a miserable resemblance to that in the USA.
