  • Although I caught a lot of fish on this trip, unfortunately the biggest catch was my plugger! I hooked it with my lure while releasing a small redfin.
    Kayak fishing is a fantastic way to fish Lake WIlliam Hovell. It's relaxing, enjoyable and can be very productive at times.
    Lake WIlliam Hovell is a tricky lake to fish. It is known for it's big population of small redfin, but there are some larger ones in there too if you are willing to persevere.

    That's a pretty giant reddie you were talking about Robbie. My record is a kilo and a half caught way back in 1975 after the floods that year. Yeah, I am a bit long in the tooth!

    Nice session on the very small Reddies. I haven't seen you using your sounder for quite a while, is it still any good or not really practical? I was seriously considering the Deeper Chirp Plus fishfinder for my paddle kayak, I would like to hear your thoughts. Thank you for your time and experience.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 4 lety +1

      G'day Garry, it's funny you should mention that. I was bushwalking with my wife today past a waterhole. It is very low, but we could see carp swimming around. I said to my wife "I need to know where the deepest parts are because that's where the fish will be". I then told her that if I get a chance to go out there soon I will take my Deeper Chirp+ to help me find the deeper spots.
      That is how I tend to use it. I don't use it on every trip, but it is usually in my bag ready to be whipped out when I need it.
      If I had never fished Lake WIlliam Hovell before I would absolutely have it with me, but because I know this lake like the back of my hand, I really have no need for a fish finder.
      So yes I still have it, still love it, but tend to use it more in places that I am not familiar with to help familiarise myself. Does that make sense?

There's heaps of lakes and river stocked with native fish already, it is great to have this spot with trout and redfin to go fishing. There was never yellowbelly occurring naturally in this area anyway as it is way too far upstream. There would have been Macquarie Perch and trout cod most likely.

      If you can throw your lures good with the rod you've got dont bother with a new rod. You could have a 2-4 kg rod and throw a swimbait for big cod but you won't throw it productively so you'd be better off throwing a blade that you can't fish more successfully if you know what i mean

    • @robbiefishing

      G'day SHane, I am a bit confused because dams don't usually have current in them. The more line you let out the deeper the lure goes mate, to a degree. Once you let too much line out the lure will swim up shallow and it varies from lure to lure.
