Interesting conversation. I’m 58 and the topic of finding one’s mission/calling/passion has been a conversation I both participated in and at times stressed over because it’s never been obviously apparent. I think sometimes the hunt for a passion and making it your life’s ambition can be misleading and pressured- filled. I’ve been in a career for 30+ years that has taken good care of me and allows me pay bills and is meaningful. I can’t say it’s ever been my passion. I have always known creativity in my life (writing, music, art at different intervals and chapters throughout my life) keeps me healthy. The outdoors center me. Friendships fill my heart and my beliefs guide me. For me, that’s meant I quit looking for “the one thing” (Ala City Slickers). Too much pressure. Your point of finding joy (Van Gogh.s almost futile lifelong pursuit he could never quite attain) and find a place for that joy in your life is well-taken!

I'm in my 60s and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Sometimes it's been hard to differentiate my passions for something I just like to do occasionally. I am a collector and like my stuff, but that stuff has gotten in the way of the actual doing so there's an invisible fence around it. Understanding passion from the perspective you've suggested clarifies more the idea of what one would do without recognition just because it's a part of their being. Lots to think about. Thanks.

Danny, you have inspired me! I’m 3 days into my two-year commitment to myself to carve a 2” by 3” lino block every day. That’s a lot of carving, right? And a lot of creating compositions. I think I struggle more with composition of prints than carving, but I still make plenty of mistakes when I carve. Just three days And I appreciate that it’s doing something rather than just thinking about doing something, and doing is what makes us better at our craft. This process gives me permission to experiment, and to practice, practice, practice. It gets me off the iPad and away from TV, and engages my brain and my soul. Will I be able to sustain this for two years? I’ll see you in two years and I’ll let you know!

    I love art
    Always have
Ive stayed up for days working on a piece
The problem i have isnt abt loving art or practicing it or anything
I just havent had a passion for living
Like ik everyones gonna be like “live for art! Your family!” Etc
But that never feels like enough
I always end up back in bed praying i wont wake up tomorrow
Idk what to do abt THAT
And idk if i want to do anything abt that
Why should i keep fighting to live when it feels like im drowning no matter what i do

It sounds like you are hurting. Reach out to anyone you can talk to and let somebody know. I'm sure there are people who care about you. It may take talking to a professional. If you need help call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.

I hear you and I understand. I love works by Anselm Kiefer and poetry by Paul Eluard. Check out Miro's Constellation Series and his "ladders of escape" that he put in some of his work. Check out the book The Sublime by Philip Shaw. Pour it out, whatever feelings you have or not, into what you create. You might be amazed by what you create during such times, I know that I am. Some of my most impactful work comes before or after I'm feeling melancholy or disheartened. The act of creating is like soft breath on quiet coals - it ignites one's creativity, art, and compassion. Create anyway.
(And for anyone who's going to leave a suicide hotline comment, I'm not remorely suicidal so please don't patronize me. Life isn't always Eternal Sunshine. So much poignant art, lit, music is alcemized from shadows.)

I cannot agree with this talk. Life is life, not a race, definitely not the Olympics or a long trek to a Nobel Prize. It is NOT about being good at things. Neither is it a treasure hunt for The One Thing, that 'passion'. It looks as if famous dead people and prize-winners have found their One Thing, but people at the top of a heap are usually humble, often not any happier than anyone else, and appreciate good human contact and ordinariness. It's like that catchy phrase - 'when you get there, there isn't any there there.' Life is moments, morality, forbearance, ups and downs. It's way better to stop and appreciate that you are alive, that everyday miracle - than to focus ahead on being better at stuff. You are already complete.

In some ways I don’t disagree, but I don’t think Danny is talking about being an Olympian or winning a Nobel prize. Those people aren’t “good” at what the do - they are GREAT. I don’t see anything wrong with trying to be good at something that brings you peace or joy (or, as Danny has said in other videos, both at the same time!). There is a real difference between chasing greatness and pursuing a passion. Just taking in life and being in the moment has its clear virtues, but there is also something to be said for finding that thing that brings you joy, the thing you would do even if no one ever saw you or your end result. Improving any skill without being tortured by those who may be better at it is not a bad thing. And for sure there are people for whom nothing is ever “good enough” and they have difficulty appreciating what “is”. I get your point I think, but I personally don’t see anything disagreeable with actively punctuating one’s existence with a craft in which you continuously improve, and one that brings you happiness.
