Hey I was the wheel support guy in the video, and I felt really bad I couldn't help you get back on the road. The race people had told the volunteers that we just give the riders the wheels and they would have tools to put them on. So after the race I told the race director that wheel support needs to carry tools in the future. I just got back from volunteering again at Gila this year and brought a multitool, so I was able to get 3 guys back on the road, two with flats and one whose shifter stuck in the big ring at the start of the climb, but we were able to fix it with the multitool.
All good man! Thanks for stopping though. I was eventually able to get to the finish haha. And thanks for volunteering!
Sure thing. It's a great race, I actually fly out from Connecticut to volunteer and watch the stages I'm not driving in. Wish we had more races like it in the US. Did you get to ride it last week?
@@GWS489 Unfortunately not! Dealing with some health stuff that set me back and they didn't have a Cat 1 field so I would have had to guest ride for a UCI team.
Brutal!!
Yep it was tough!
I was about to comment the same thing, brutal indeed 😮
I had a set of wheels in a road race about 6 years ago. Flatted halfway through the 60 mile race. The race support with my wheels flew right past me. Walked 5 miles to race hq, and then had the indignity of having to wait another hour for the race to end so I could collect my wheels and piss off home.
Damn that’s a bummer!
I feel your pain, I did the Gila last year, and someone threw tacks in feed zone of stage two. I flatted both my tires and support vehicle didn't have any rim brake wheels and I got stuck with a DNF, however, I did get to finish the rest of the stages. hen flatted in the first two miles of the TT and had to walk my bike back to the start.
Damn! That's terrible. At least they let you finish the rest of the stages!
OMG I saw a quick release axles, Rapilock is their product name
Recently had a similar situation in a race, where nobody pointed out a huge pot hole and I flatted. I have to say though, having tubeless tires really saved me. Maybe something to consider if your wheels can support tubeless. I flagged down someone who had a pump and the sealant seemed to do it's job as the tire held air long enough to finish the final 30 kms, even though it was still leaking air slowly.
Dang! And yes I’m about to switch over to tubeless to hopefully avoid future pinch flats!
Does carrying the tiny saddlebag with some tools make that much difference on your bike?
I'm not sure of the exact difference but it's slightly noticeable on a very climby stage like this
I flatted on the last day too when I did this race, except I flatted near the start on a cattle grate and I was never able to catch back on. It didn't help that the neutral support didn't know how to change a wheel, and the wheel I got was underinflated. I tried like hell though, I went so hard on the climb that I was seeing double which was a problem during the descent! I dropped from 10th to the 20s in GC which was kind of a bummer.
Bummer! All things considered it was still a fun race. Going to do it again next year!
@@johnny_cycling Yeah it was a fun race but tough for those of us used to sea level! And when I did it, there was no GPS computers so most of us had no idea exactly where the climbs were.
That is my worst fear!
welp, dang.
If there were wheel bags I would have checked them for pouches, when I leave wheels in a car I put tools in the bag due to this happing at TBC last year
Good tip! But unfortunately it was just wheels, no bag.
Out of curiosity what is your race weight?
150lbs/69kg
Thats a bummer. I think its reasonable to have some level of expectation with support but having been a racer and volunteer sag myself, a lot of volunteers I've met were just friends or fans of the sport and not cyclists themselves so they only offer what the race director gives them and the rest is up to you. Its not easy getting volunteers. I would give the RD some feedback on this to help improve the event. IMO he should have at least had a patch kit to get yourself back on the road.
Yeah, the guy said he was just on vacation or something and volunteered. I wish they all got a small kit of tools or something. But oh well!
noooooooooooooooooooo
bro you were 1000x calmer than i wouldve been lmao
Haha! 45mins of walking will calm you down!
Lmao wheel support and they don’t even have a key 🫥
🙃
