    Congratulations, well done! I came 2nd … to last 😂 in my first race (on single speed against geared riders). But it took me a few years to learn how to train and peak properly and things got far better for me. You will improve too, no doubt! The weight is important - I raced at 147-149 lbs right up to when I retired from racing at 58.

    • @MTBMOR
      @MTBMOR Před 2 měsíci

      How were those last years of racing? I'm turning 50 and I feel like my fitness is failing. I've only been riding about 10 years, but I was an athlete when younger until Snowboarding took over.

    • @tombeck129
      @tombeck129 Před 2 měsíci

      @@MTBMOR my last few years I still got on the podium in 8 hour solo races - single speed category. My very last race at 58 was brutal however. I only got on the podium because there were few competitors (covid time). I only managed 11 laps (10km each) compared to previous 13-14 laps. And after that the strength and fitness really declined fast, because I stopped all structured training. Now I just ride for fun. 😀

  • @ironscott
    @ironscott Před 2 měsíci

    Congrats on your race! I raced as well so fully understand the difficulty of the course and the windy conditions. It was no easy feat. I could write a novel but will try to be brief. If you decide to race in the AMBCS, no course outside of Kessler will be remotely as chunky, so you could race your hardtail. Most of the courses have terrain similar to Hobbs (even one of the races is at Hobbs), so that should give you an idea. You might like a short travel full-sus but you can definitely do a hardtail and not worry too much. The AMBCS is a lot of fun - even if you just race a couple/few of them.
    You were smart to not take too many risks on the downhills. There just isn't much benefit for the risk, the exception being the cases where you need to pass someone and they take a B line and you can take the A line (like when the old guy passed you - he's a friend of mine, lol). These races pay you back for strong climbing efforts. People in general hate climbing and most people don't have climbing as a strength, so that's where I always try to gain an advantage. As you mentioned, losing a little body weight will help that even more. Your bike is plenty light right now.
    I'd be happy to message you on IG or something else if you have any questions. Again, great job!

    I wouldn't worry too much about wheelsucking (drafting) in an MTB race. You usually aren't going fast enough to make much difference. :) LOL Sitting on a wheel and pressuring someone into going to hard or making a mistake is a time-honored race tactic! ... I was at that race with as my daughter is on Apex Jr Devo. She was solidly in 2nd for Cat 2 17-18 yo when she had a bad crash on her 3rd (last) lap and had to run it in. Damaged bike, concussion, lots of tissue damage. Her boyfriend started in your group (in your video he has on the Rad Racing stars/stripes jersey right in front of you at the start. He was pretty stoked when I showed him your video! I missed your race because I took my daughter to the hospital but my wife was cheering y'all on at the top of the double climb.

    Great video, Evan. What's your thought on mechanical vs wireless shifting in a race environment?

    • @EvanSteinberg3
      @EvanSteinberg3  Před 2 měsíci

      I'd prefer mechanical. My shifting was perfect during the race using SRAM XX1 AXS, but sometimes you might need a half press of the shifter to get it to shift if you had hit your derailleur. Its funnny i charged the battery overnight before the race and I ALMOST left home without it haha

    • @JoshTaylor
      @JoshTaylor Před 2 měsíci

      @@EvanSteinberg3 that would have been a disaster! I always carried a spare when I ran AXS, since moved back to mechanical, but I've wondered how/if wireless could have an advantage during longer races. If there's enough shifting, maybe finger fatigue is real.

    If you start thinking... "I need to lose weight to be more competitive", then it will stop being fun and become a suffering self-impossed challenge, where you'll also have to race skinny teens.

    Is your youtube target audience, primarily hardcore XC racers? I DON'T THINK SO.
