Man originally meant all people. Male person was werman.Female person was wifman. Man came to mean a male person dropping wer. Female person retains man - woman. But also kept its original meaning of people as in human and mankind.
Female and male seem to have same etymology. They don’t. Spelling makes it seem that way.
