Rusty Electric Stove Restoration [Camping Hotplate]

  • In this video I restore an antique rusty electric stove. This is the first time I used sandblasting to remove the rust from the parts of the old hot plate. In this restoration I not only sand blasted the metal but also the ceramic, but with glass bead abrasive which does not damaged the surface. Another special feature in this restoration video is the cold bluing which is used to form a thin protective layer (patina) on ferrous surfaces to reduce corrosion. Some last words about the hot plate: it consumes about 700 Watts but unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out when it was made.
    ▬ What I did ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Of course, I start by disassembling the antique stove top, for that I only have to loosen three screws and four nuts, the rest is all clamped, which is a simple but effective construction method. Then I blast the metal parts, in my new sandblasting cabin, using slag as the blasting medium. Then I blast the metal parts, in my new abrasive blasting cabin, with slag as the blasting material. I immediately prime all parts afterwards, to prevent new rust from forming. Before painting, in black and brown, I sand the surface with sandpaper to roughen it up so the spray paint will adhere better. In the next step, I remove the heating coil from the ceramic socket. I blast all the ceramic parts and the three screws with glass bead abrasive, the advantage of this abrasive isn’t that the surface is as damaged as it would be by sandblasting with classic material. I treat the screws with a quick bluing which is brushed on. I polish the brass parts for the power connection and now all components are prepared and the assembly begins. Finally, I check that the device works and enjoy a typical German dish, Guten Appetit!
    ▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools and materials: screwdriver, wrench, tweezers, sandblasting cabin, slag blasting abrasive, glass beads blasting abrasive, primer, black varnish, brown varnish, sandpaper, water, cold burnishing, drill, steel wire attachment, polishing paste, polishing machine, pliers and pincers, leather and for the perfect finish - potatoes, sausages, mustard, Sauerkraut :)

Very good restoration, but I would have done two things different: I would have added a third pin and grounded it. And I would have encapsuled the two wires inside with those small ceramic rings. That would make it more safe to use, I think.

Die Firma gibt es schon über 90 Jahre, dieses Modell ist locker 60 Jahre alt wenn nicht sogar noch älter. Schöne Restauration, freut mich immer wenn solche Schätze nicht verloren gehen.

"camping hotplate"? When did camp sites get electric power? Do you pack in and out a generator? Looks more like an old 1930's ~ 1940's apartment hotplate, which are/were a known fire hazzard. I hope you upgraded it.
EDIT: Based on other comments you didn't upgrade it, so it is just as dangerous and unsafe after the restoration as it was before.
