Making Music with The Typewriter Orchestra

- For pre-digital natives, there's nothing quite as nostalgia-inducing as the manual "click," "clack" and "ding" sounds of an old mechanical typewriter. That's why The Boston Typewriter Orchestra is making these old machines quite literally "sing" again. Since 2004, this six-man ensemble has been playing a range of covers and original songs on both desktop and portable machines from years past. And if you thought all typewriters emitted the same sounds, think again. This orchestra's sonorous symphonies have captivated crowds all over New England.

Nathan Moir that's actually a good question

Rainer Hersch?
Black Knight there's this song called 'the typewriter'. it features a typewriter as the Solo. Its oddly satisfying actyally, worth watching.
NicsCL
That's the piece I'm talking about. I mentioned Rainer Hersch, a conductor, because there was a version of that with him as the conductor. The video is titled "crazy typewriter music". Rainer Hersch is also who I assume was the person whom Grace Chen was talking about.
how do you manage to produce SO much content?! it's amazing!
its so satisfying to hear all those keys click
Once again, Great Big Story has made another wonderful video! Keep up the good work!
Omg! This was like an episode of Portlandia.

Leroy Anderson composed "The Typewriter." It's a classic.
Oh, man, I love the sounds that typewriters make!
Straight up! The purity.
Sound of Noise!
Nice~
too bad you didn't let us hear them playing without voices over the top. how can you make a short doc on music without letting us hear it?

talented artist in the world, buuuutttt we're not going to show you any
of their art !
Its called "Great Big STORY" For some reason. Its not a showcasing channel
Great! I remember hearing some cool songs on the radio in the 50's & 60's with a typewriter playing percussive rhythms together with an orchestra. Every phrase ended with the sound of a carriage return and bell in perfect time! The typist and snare drummer played in unison including rolls. Wish I'd bought the records- can't find them now. Does anybody know who recorded them? The only thing I've found is Janis Joplin but she's not keeping time. 🤗
0:24 is that the guy from wisecrack that does earthling Cinema?!
just like the indonesian music i once heard played by virgoun titiled " surat cinta untuk starla " ( love letter to starla ) and i kind of love it
REEEEEEEMIX!
You can’t forget “the typewriter” by Leroy Anderson 😂
Tom Hanks would love this
But the guy said that the typewriters have a 2-3 year lifespan.
Fff, I've seen people play with an air chicken.
(But seriously; a lot of respect to these guys, that's amazing)
Lol me too, as well as telephone and metal ruler
The music videos would be great, the music in the background and someone else typing the lyrics on screen
where do you get a portable typewriter? i now have a sudden urge to own one
These are my type of people
In my band I play the typewriter!
Wheee~
I always wanted a type writer but idk if I can even get one.... :/
No one's mentioned Tarzan yet?
Avalanches poster in the background at 0:20 makes this.
What is the source material music from 0:21 - 0:44? Anyone know?
if they play senbonzakura that would be included in the list
They'd make a great band with the air chicken, soft gun, ruler, and house phone
yeah
If anyone asks for the notes of your music, just insert a piece of paper and some ink and perform the song. Then boom, notes sheet

This would've been more funny if this was by some other channel that was parodying the Great Big Story... I mean, seriously, where did you find these people...
The first launchpad
This is what probably started all of this. Here's the original 'Typewriter Song'. ENJOY!!czcams.com/video/RlqDFPLUhig/video.html Yes, I know these typewriters very well. I still have my Royal portable in its lovely carrying case. Those are the kinds I had when I took typing in high school.
"A Great Big Story" and it's just over TWO minutes long. The hell?
Janis Joplin had songs with typewriters as percussion instruments.
ba-ba-ba-BOI
This kind of thing isnt my type ;)
84th comment!
Damn, that Underwood’s platen looks very worn out
There should be a calculator orchestra!
Cheers to them for finding something there passionate about, but I did not here one piece of "music" they were apparently typing.

Who's idea was this 😁
Didn't they get X'd from America's Got Talent?

Why would you call it an orchestra?
The Errand Boy taken a bit/appropriately too far? :P
You can increase the life time of the typewriter by putting paper
Wow they play music on a typewriter and yet don't play any of their music, so awesome! Fucking shit reporting.
Anyone else thinking about the intro to the movie Brazil? (czcams.com/video/Dvo6ChoKCF4/video.html)
Alt Name: Typewriter Abuse Club
But when are you going to release an album on colored splattered vinyl?
is this proof that all men are natural musicians?
I dunno if squidward will approve of this.
Why do all of these guys look like psychopathic killers? lmao
typewriter musician aren't exactly "regular" people
These guys actually have an audience that listens to their "compositions"? Really?
did someone say corona?
early
hi
And my mom says I can't play an instrument..
First? Lol nope.
First the good - I think the videos/segments Great Big Story do are by-in-large, excellent. However this one was disappointing. With the exception of 14 seconds in the beginning, there was very little of the actual music that wasn't covered by VO. You put any sort of payoff right at the beginning and left the whole story hanging with no payoff at the end. You can't just describe something for 2 minutes and then not close it out with some sort of segment at the end to tie it together. Feel that's a huge missed opportunity in editing.
Strange. Just strange.
fruity loops prototype
I love type writers
But excuse me I find that very noisy
There's nout queerer than folk.
Tf is this...
Cool... until you realize they are potentially ruining valuable pieces of history by abusing the functions of the typewriters like this.
Weirdos
No! Booooooo....If I wanted a-tonal, experimental music I'd look to Eno and the like. These gents just seem to be scrapping for the different, and not the inventive. The fact that the video is mainly voice-over should clue us in to the reality that their sound is purely novel, all at the expense of being any modicum of tolerable.
It doesn't surprise me that they are all middle aged men in this video. Also it sounds awful haha, but hey if they enjoy it power to them.
