Join me, Koifish, as I attempt to get the achievement Blood Eage, where I play as Jarl Sigurd-snake in the eye, the coolest viking on the coastline! I have to conquer all of England, but luckily I'm not alone in this challenge! Together with me, I have history expert Hilbert With History, guiding me through my journey to the top!
In this CK3 viking challenge, I attempt to form an empire within one lifetime!!

    • @phil385
      @phil385 Před 3 lety

@@jackeidson7101 Actually that has never been confirmed. There has been lots of theories about why he was called "The boneless". Some say it was because he was crippled, some say it was because he was skinny, and some say it was a purely ironic name, and that he was in fact a very large, and big boned man. This is actually the most likely thing, as he has been described as that the most times in historical archives. The theory of him being a cripple was just popularized by the Vikings TV series, but you will still find many different medias depicting him as being quite normal, skinny or otherwise.

I feel like I have to tell u that the name Svein does not mean Pig.
I'm guessing u are confusing it with the danish word for Pig, which is svin.
The Old Norse Word for Pig is Gríss.
The name Svein means "Young Man or Young Warrior", according to google.
I'm personally from the Faroe Islands where the word Svein or Sveinur is still used. It means Boy or Young Man, we also used in other ways. For example the word Piparsveinur is the Faroese Word for a 30 Year old bachelor.
Anyways you have one of the best history channels on youtube keep it up!

i think Sigurd "Snake-in-the-eye" was named that because he might've had a death stare. maybe he was so intimidating that when people would be gazed by him, it would seem as if he had a snake in his eye, that made him so formidable. idk just a guess tbh

One prevailing theory about Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye's name is a congenital condition called "iris coloboma". Essentially the pupil isn't fully formed round and is instead with "a tail" trailing out into the iris, much like a snake or even the eyes of a snake.
Ivar the Boneless might have suffered from a congenital bone disease, a probable candidate for that would be "osteogenesis imperfecta" or it might even be a nickname about his manhood, although less likely...
(Just my two cents as an MD, a history lover, and a Dane)

Ivar the Boneless was not impotent, one-legged, flexible like a snake (in the Last Kingdom book series) or any other deformity.
What happened is a classic tale of mistranslation. Irish monks wrote his name as Exosus or the Ivar the Cruel.
Later Norman rulers translated this into Ex (without) Osus (bones).
But it has always been Ivar the Cruel not Ivar the Boneless. Though Ivar the Boneless is a more bad ass name.
    Some other epic mistranslation examples.
Moses was depicted with horns. In fact Michael Angell too made his Moses statue with horns.
Why? Hebrew books wrote Moses face shone with the light of God. This phrase in Greek is written as his face was horned. Lol!
