The Danelaw - Alfred vs. Guthrum - Extra History - Part 1

- đ The Danelaw, Viking History of Alfred vs. Guthrum: The Vikings moved from Scandinavia to the coasts of Britain, intent on establishing a new kingdom by any blood necessary. What they probably didn't expect was that one of their own leaders, Guthrum, and the local king, Alfred, would end up cooperating on the creation of a kingdom for the Danes.

Moral of the story: don't break an oath on holy relics
Nick william you mean that box of bones?
Why not? It lead to getting an entire kingdom, and the war would've given more had it gone well.
Man idc what religious relic it is or what religion it's from, if an important religious leader tells me it's sacred and to swear on it, I'm not breaking that. Do you want to get cursed? That's how you get cursed.
If only Harold Godwinson had learned that lessonâŠ
Keeping his oath is a straight loss. He outright profited a kingdom by breaking it. The war went poorly, but breaking his oath went SWIMMINGLY.
I don't know about you guys, but "Keep out my dudes" always works for me
The ending was surprisingly wholesome for a story of mostly wars, invasions, and usurpations lol. In the end, friendship was the kingdom we wanted all along!

4:37-4:51 Easily the most adorable and hilarious moment in the whole video. Alfred and Guthrum also seem to have a Goku-Vegeta relationship. Alfred almost always wins, and he wants to be Guthrum's friend. Guthrum wants power, and really doesn't want to be Alfred's friend. Later on though, with time, they do become friends. Close friends at that.
Accurate analogy

This is Nick's art style again, right? I can honestly say that he's one of the best hires you guys have made. The pictures are very smooth and the details he puts into his backgrounds are much more extensive then the others. Also his animated sections are some of the funniest I've seen from EH. Keep him around guys, his work is my favorite out of all the Extra History episodes.
This episode is Scott's art, and next week's Danelaw episode is by Nick! They ARE close brothers so you may certainly notice that their art styles for these shows are very similar :)
Then they are both excellent artists and their episodes have done great at keeping my attention on the screen, when in most cases I'd listen to these episodes in the background. I give them many compliments
Eventually, Alfredâs Kingdom would finish the job and kick out the Danelaw, and Alfred would be remembered as the only English/British king ever referred by the moniker of âthe Great.â

To elaborate just a smidge on the 'getting lost in a fog'. It did happen, but there was some help. Alfred's mother was the daughter of Charles the Bald of France, and therefore Charles III had ships around France (thanks in part to Rollo of Normandy), stopping the ships from sailing through the Channel. And so they got lost in a fog and wrecked on the western coast of England.
also, "less than a century". 878-38. 60 years. At least until Danelaw 2 came out in 991.
No she wasn't
Danelaw Vikings had been using Normandy as a staging point to hit England for generations since Hrolfr Gongu had blundered his way to a Dukedom.

Seems like Alfred knew the only way of not having to waste resources on war. Either pay a lot of money, or come, show them why you are king, and then pardon them, breaking the cycle of revenge.

OH HEY WHAT'S UP YA'LL IT'S GUTHRUUUUM! Made me laugh so hard xD
this was a little hard to follow, some maps prob would have helped
Thanks for the feedback!
I also miss the detailed descriptions of battles that you used to do in your earlier works. Please
One problem for this period is that we just *don't* have detailed descriptions of any of the battles, from any source. It's just stuff like "shield wall crashed against shield wall and {insert faction here} was victorious in arms."
And the establishment of the Danelaw. Where were the fallen kingdoms and what was Guthrums situation in those areas. It was very focused on just two people which provided a great story between the two, but left the context very confusing.
The other issue here is that maps from this time period weren't always the most defined. Still, knowing the cities locations and general regions would be good, and we know that, at least.
*faint laughs from scandinavia*

I find it odd history sees Anglo-Saxons and Danes as two radically different people, depicted as different looking on TV. The Anglo-Saxons invaded England from Denmark a few hundred years earlier. They worshiped the same Norse gods and were basically the same people. While the Danes were invading Saxon England, they were allies with the Saxons in Germany against Charlemagne.
A few hundred years apart and a religious conversion can make a lot of difference in a culture.
The TV depiction is incredibly inaccurate though.
The anglo-saxon people were not the same as the angles and saxons who invaded the island, they were the same descendants of the Celtic tribes that the romans had conquered and christianized, just speaking the language of their germanic conquerors.
Daniel C The Germanic conquerors also affected their culture heavily, and some of them actually were descended from the Angles, saxon, frisians etc, but yeah, you're right.
Then a couple hundred years later be influenced from French Normans, with the Normans themselves being descendants of Vikings.
"Look at all those Christians, praying to their gods."
"No. We don't have many gods like the heathens. We have saints. They're powerful, divine figures with specific abilities that we can call upon in our time of need."
"So... You have gods."
"Ye- N-no! It's very different, and vastly superior. Some of our saints are even tied to specific cities to watch over them."
"Yeah. Patron Deities. We have those too."
"Shut up! We're just better than you, okay?"
Robert Daw
Actually saints are asked to spread the prayers to God himself and technically anyone can be a saint if they are confirmed to be in heaven even relatives of an old farmer.
and how exactly do you confirm that they are in heaven?
Golden Falcon
The church reviews the suspected saints life and contributions. Even then it's no so much official so much as "We are really sure they are saints".
Also probably bribes, donations and petitions. It seemed to mostly be putting an official Church stamp on a dead name that was locally considered a saint already. After mostly checking they weren't cannibals/criminals/defilers/etc.
Nowadays its a torturous combination of politics, bureaucracy, petitions and intensive investigation (and probably bribes).
Also varies depending on which christian sect is doing the canonisation.
But yes, they're considered something like a sub-sector manager watching over a specific area of interest and passing up/down information and entreaties.
Thatâs catholics really, not all christians believe in saints.
This episode was great. The art, storytelling, all of it combined just felt REALLY good. Keep up the great work! Thank you for producing it for us

Part of Guthram's conversion came from the fact that Guthram was getting older, and did not want to continue the incessant fighting required to achieve Valhalla. He wanted peace, calm, and an easier way to heaven.
