January 13, 2016 I visited the WolHyang shop located in WolHyang District, near the Arch of Triumph downtown Pyongyang. The shop is frequently visited by foreign tourists, in this store there are available a variety of souvenirs such as artwork, herbs and so forth. My several visits to the store with my family or while I served as a photographer for several foreign delegations I took them to visit this store. In this store, it is allowed to take pictures and videos. The employees are also friendly and they allowed to take photos together. For this time I tried to take a video, my wife and I want to buy an embroidery painting but the kind of painting that I want is not available then my wife bought some Tea Ginseng. Several waitresses noticed my GoPro camera, but they don’t mind and thought it was a pocket camera.

Since I came to Pyongyang in November 2012 until I left Pyongyang in March 2016 I got so many experiences.
I just wanna share a bit of my life experience in North Korea, mostly in Pyongyang. We are foreigners (Diplomats, Expatriates) who live in Pyongyang can roam freely around Pyongyang, and diplomats got more privileged than other expatriates.
There are also many Americans (USA), Canadians, Korean American who works as teachers and professors in Pyongyang.
Foreigners can travel to other cities outside Pyongyang, but we must request permission to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea.
Since I lived in North Korea, I already travel to other cities in Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern side. Sometimes I travel with a minder, sometimes I just drive my car by my own and with my family (without a minder),

i always assume it's for inventory purposes
I remember in a previous video they were doing conversions of the currency, since he's a diplomat I'm wondering if there might be a purpose for doing that maybe like someone earlier had stated that it links to inventory purposes or even keeping track of how the income fairs for taxes.

i can understand all of his conversations. he speaks bahasa indonesia to his wife and basic korean language (basic, thats why i can understand!). he did nothing suspicious. its just a basic communication :) he is definitely not fake doing stuffs in north korea!
I've seen a few comments asking for English subtitles - if you click the [CC] button on the video options (or turn on Captions in mobile app), you can turn them on. Not everything being said is translated, but most is.
Also yes they accept USD in a lot of places in Pyongyang. International trade is mostly done in US Dollars but North Korea isn't allow to exhange them on forex markets due to US sanctions. Banks in North Korea will exchange foreign currency for NK Won - and the exchange rate doesn't change much so it's easy for merchants to know how much each currency is worth.
By accepting USD and some other foreign currencies, the government can stockpile them for trading. It also makes it easier for tourists to pay for things - Egypt has a similar concept for this reason. To shopkeepers - money is money.

@@zackarymead2785 Maybe it's true. But when I was a kid in the late 90s, I was with grandparents, they had similar stores downtown. Few people went there either, because people already know what is inside and they don’t need it. Whoever wanted to buy something, did it a long time ago.

They have a big inventory and lots of female sales workers. No heat and no lights. One customer with a big parking lot that is almost empty. How do they do it?

Jaka, at 3:30 when you bought the "Moranbong Band" DVD, you said that you were at their concert. It's true ? How did you manage to get to their concert? Do you live in the DPRK on a permanent basis or something else? Can foreigners get to the "Moranbong Band" concert? What kind of status need to have besides tourist status? Tourists, I found out, are not allowed.

There's frequent blackouts or brownouts due to power supply problems, so even getting reliable lighting in some buildings is a problem. My guess is that the store is quite large and spacious, so without an expensive central heating system installed it won't warm up very easily.
