Last tape recorder we ever bought with the intent on using it (as opposed to collecting it) was a Radio Shack (OEM'd from Aiwa) stereo AM/FM radio auto-reverse cassette recorder (with built-in speaker) back around the turn of the century. Was a pretty swish unit for its day - included a stereo clip-on lavalier mic. Never used it as we didn't do all that much travelling by bus like we used to and MP3 just came out. Still have the wee beastie and the box it came in - along with the receipt!

Ok looking forward to this. Bought the V-115 primarily based upon your review of that unit. For the money it's been a jam up little unit that filked a particular niche l needed filled. Perfect for throwing in the tackle box or backpack. Im interested in seeing how the little cassette unit stacks up.

Yes I like the v115 too. Use it as an MP3 player.

Well it does work, not bad for a noise maker.
The model number seems to be a obvious reminder of the Radio shack products.
It's like using the name Grundig on a cheap radio, trying to con the buyer.
I could be barking up the wrong tree lol.

I would say is on par with latest handheld cassette recorder from Sony or Philips... it even has a metal flywheel while others had only plastic flywheel with no mass at all. I was expecting a much cheaper build.

I'm assuming the speaker magnet is shielded? Looks like it sits right against the cassette.

If anyone is buying a mono cassette player like this, I have an adapter I bought on amazon that puts the mono audio in both left and right ear when listening through headphones or both speakers if you plug it in to them.

Honestly, if that device had a stereo tape head and didn’t have a recording function then this would actually be a better bargain than it already is….

Not being marketed as a "walkman" personal stereo. It is marketed as a tape recorder / radio. The intended use would be as a portable radio with the tape function not so much to listen to music, bit more to record. Either through the mic or off the radio. For example in an emergency and you are listening to news or information, having a blank tape in the unit allows for easy recording of broadcast. That is the target user, or for casual dictation. For this it would be perfect and the analog tuner will cover the entire FM and AM band worldwide. Also great for radio DX use, where listeners go to remote places to try to receive distant stations, and being able to log the reception on tape for proof of reception. It's cheap enough and for what it is, works well enough.

@@12voltvids ~ back in the late-'80s we bought a GE mono tape recorder for the express purpose of having something to listen to at work - didn't care about stereo and you could schlep it to and from work easy. This would've filled the bill even better with the AM/FM radio attached.

I have realistic tapes too. Concertape, etc. Interesting cassette radio combo. If it's decent, I could use it to listen old voice recordings. Would a tape get tangled in that unit? I don't like players that tear up tapes.

Tapes get eaten if they are old and sticky or the mechanism is in poor condition or faulty

@@dlarge6502 or the take-up reel binds up inside the cassette case because it unevenly winds. I witnessed it many times. But if you don't catch it, the supply reel will feed tape but the take-up reel doesn't resulting in the tape getting wrapped around the capstan and pinch roller. Better players will shut off when the take up reel stops turning. And it happens to newer tapes.

Mine stopped working after playing the radio once. Put some batteries in it and the audio just no longer works. Everything else is fine though, even records too

Likely depending on the problem. Many of the transistors in the old units are no longer available.

When I saw the brand name, I was like, 'Why is he reviewing this?' We all know these modern day walkman-knockoff thingamajigs are crap, but honestly, for a cheap tape player, the azimuth on it is spot on, considering the decent treble response coming from it when you played the Music Bakery tape. It ain't too, too bad, but we do wish it eas stereo rather than mono... Hopefully they did a better job with the bluetooth cassette players they're releasing now...
