Episode 45. We're revisiting an old topic this week and dishing out some more underrated games. These games need more love. Check out the Game Sack Episode Guide! www.gamesack.net
Nothing quite like finding a youtube channel you have never seen before.. and liking it so much that you exhaust their entire upload library in 3 days.. lol Keep it up guys!
Joe is like the Gollum of the video game world with Sega being his One Ring. You can even hear him say "Genesises" in this episode. "Yes, my Genesisessssss...." It all makes so much sense now.
Both good games. psx is an interesting way of referring to ps1. not shitting on it because I remember it being called that in the 90's. but since then there has actually been a psx and I guess the slim was technically the psone . lol PSX just makes me think of mountain dew commercials. wish I had one of those, the actual psx, not md, lol
I absolutely love Bucky O'Hare. I bought it for a friend for his birthday when it was new (we used to watch the show), and I ended up playing the game through his birthday party.
I consider the first 67 episodes to be my "classic 67" list only because there was a lot of experimental attempts at the format until it settled in what we know today, they really stand out
7:00 Bucky! That was made by some of the folks that left Konami to form the company TREASURE. That's partly why that game looks and plays and sounds so awesome. RIP Konami, the heart and souls that made your games cool are now gone. Oh well, just gotta wait for Treasure to make another game to enjoy hardcore action gaming again. Everything else, now days, plays so slow....
If I were to take requests, could we pick games that have more game in them than navigation in them. Those are exactly the kind of titles that encourage me to go back and play old games that get to the point. Just think of all the other stuff one can do, create and accomplish, with the time spent in skyrim alone. Imagine, instead of building a world in Minecraft, one could learn Maxon C4D and learn the trade for the real world.
I LOVE Knuckles Chaotix, and I'm so glad the game got some love, but while the soundtrack is great, I wouldn't put it above all Sonic soundtracks. They're all so good, its hard to choose.
Bucky O'Hare was also a cartoon! RC Stunt Copter is also a very underrated game and I lost dozens of hours of my life to that addictive little game. You guys always seem to dig up obscure games I've never heard of too, how about doing a show based on them? Things like Team Buddies, Markos Magic Football, Bloody Roar, Evil Zone, Eagle One - just off the top of my head. Admittedly most of those are PS1 games with the exception of MMF but there's loads more out there. Great show as always! Thanks!
@cheesystick1 The game footage is usually captured with a Sony DSR-25 deck. I have lent Dave my Sony DVMC-DA1 to capture video on his end. Both devices capture to the same codec. When capturing HD games I use a Blackmagic Intensity Pro. The Blackmagic cannot capture standard definition video games.
One thing not mentioned about batman returns on the snes....how the level in itself is fairly easy to get through but on the boss battles the a.i suddenly shoots through the roof to ridiculously hard, plus your character has one life bar but the bosses seem to have a life bar that changes color a couple of times before you actually start to knock their life bar down making it a tad unfair. Cool DK shirt by the way :)
Knuckles Chaotix is such an underrated Sonic game. They are right about the rubber band like force your 2 characters use, but I had no problem with it, I found the game very fun to play and the music is awesome as well. One of my favorite games in the Sonic series.
Yeah that's why we do Overlooked Games now. But underrated doesn't mean that it has been marked as a bad game, just that the game hasn't gotten the praise we feel it deserves.
I really wish Knuckles' Chaotix would get released digitally; like on the PSN, XBLA, and the Wii. Or even the Vita or the Nintendo 3DS. It's not even on any Sonic compilations, like the Sonic Gems collection for the GameCube. I think that's ridiculous! Anyway, great episode guys!
@Sneakyturtleegg I'm glad to hear I'm back in good standing with you. I was worried, really! Thanks for watching as always and we do have a lot of fun making this show.
The Gun Valkyrie game looks like an updated version of Outwars for PC. I remember when that game came out, the idea of having jet packs to traverse a 3D world was supposed to be the next big thing.
Jumping Flash is definitely one of the best early PS1 releases. It was way ahead of its time with the use of the double jump to reach high platforms in a 3d environment. The game had that avant-garde feel to it too with its wacky art design.
You're right, if you could mix the SNES platform stages with the Sega CD driving stages, it'd be awesome. That would make for one amazing Batman game, second only to the Arkham series.
great episode! loved jumping flash back in the day. they just don't make enough games with robot rabbits fighting old men! it had a good sequel which played a lot like the first, both of which rocked!
I love how you guys use TV magic when you put carts into the systems. The way you used the backwards footage when closing the lid-thing on the NES at 5:30 really took me aback. It stood out like a sore thumb, despite how quick the clip was. I was just like "Whoa, what?! You can't DO that!" lol. xD EDIT: Looking closer and repeating the clip a few times, it seems that maybe you may just be using the tip of your finger leveraged against your other finger. Maybe this one's not so TV magic-y. It's still hard to tell though. I guess I'll just have to ask. Was that a reverse-played shot of you opening the NES, or was that just super slickness?
Funny fact about Bucky O'Hare for the NES: it really screwed software pirates over back in the day (much like how Earthbound did in its own way). After beating the game, a password was given to unlock a hard mode that made everything a one-hit-kill on the player. If the game code found it was't being played on legitimate hardware (or early emulation), it turned this mode on by default. Makes me wonder what'll happen if I get this game and run it with the lockout chip disabled on my NES.. Hmm
I love Knuckles Chaotix and it is true that if you give the game a chance and understand how it plays and understand the level design it becomes much more enjoyable. Keep up the great work!
I enjoyed Jumping flash 2 a little more. It felt a little more imaginative in its theming, Its music was a bit better, and the small cutscenes were more amusing. That, plus the fact that it was probably the first 3D platformer I ever experienced in-depth. The feel blew me away, from the visual effects of diving into water to trying to jump as high as I possibly could and land on the toughest objects. One could also argue that it's one of the first games with a built-in "achievement" system.
@dave4shmups I bet its something to do with emulation being difficult. He said 32X for sprites and Genesis for backgrounds, so technically there is supposed to be 2 emulators and when you program a genesis emulator you have to kind of write the code in the middle of it, and make it stick out (so it feels like an actual 32X unit sticking out of Genesis.)
@ HiddenAdept I agree w/ you on Suikoden V. This game went back to the series' roots. Also, if you look on ebay it can still go for retail while the other games (besides Suikoden ll) go for far less.
Hey MrGameSack. I just wanted to comment to say that I literally said "OH MY GOD ... fucking FINALLY!" when you mentioned Jumping Flash. I've ALWAYS loved this game (since the PS1 demo disk early in it's life) and NO ONE has EVER mentioned it. ... back to watching.
Thanks for showing Gun Valkyrie, I hadn't heard of it before but now I have thanks to you, and I'm very glad since it seems to be another of those Xbox = Dreamcast 2 games! Wikipedia says it was even originally being made for the Dreamcast... Also, Jumping Flash is on PSN, but stay away if you live in Europe, like I do, because it's the unoptimised PAL version, and has a horrendous framerate compared to the NTSC one!
@MRabbitFrog It's a followup because most big subjects are always open for followups if they can't think of an entirely new subject with the systems they have. This one needed a followup anyway as there are too many underlooked games to put into one episode.
@GatorM Actually reviewers at the time criticized the fact that the second player link mechanic slowed the gameplay down. Reviewers expected the game to be as fast as the previous sonic games and therefore it got negative reviews. The fact that the 32X was selling poorly also led to lackluster sales. Although it is a good game, it is not fondly remembered by SEGA.
Funfact about Bucky, the Lead Programmer and Music Composer both left Konami and formed TREASURE. Might be why Ronald McDonald Land for SEGA GENESIS (made by Treasure) has that same tight gameplay feel as Bucky. That is why the old Konami is dead. If we are to ever see another AXELAY, CONTRA 3, or SUPER CASTLEVANIA 4, Konami will have to hire TREASURE. Kinda like how Konami hired them for Gradius V. Contra V or Castlevania V anyone?
Jackie Chan's music is extremely similar to the music in FInal Soldier for PCE.Must have been made at the same time by the same people. Once you hear them both it'll make Jackie's music seem like it should be in a shooter.
@Number1StarSB Yep, and it was popular at least in the UK as well with action figures being made of Bucky here. It was probably made in the US but not as popular as it was in the UK which meant it flopped and they didn't renew it?
Very nice games guys. What I find annoying about Knuckles' Chaotix is that it wasn't re-released in any of the muitiple Sonic compilations that were release over the years.
While I enjoy the channel and your reviews, I have to laugh at the amount of times you bring up the music in the games, so so game but the music is great!! Buy it for the music if nothing else! The game is great but it has no sound test. Keep up the good work guys :)
@MrGameSack Thank you for getting back to me. I can't afford something that nice, but I'm looking for something to capture standard definition composite, maybe something MAC compatible. I've heard bad things about composite capture from both the dazzle and even the hauppauge, so I don't know what to do. I don't need top quality, (you guys,) just something that won't throw audio out of sync. BTW, I will recommend you to all of my friends. Your show rocks.
Knuckles chaotix is a great game, like most 32x games it was overlooked, the only sonic game i completed. Batman begins, was well recieved with reviews, when it was released.
Went to Babagges as a kid looking for Jackie Chan's Kung Fu and the cashier told me he had no clue what I was talking about and never heard of it! So I ended up getting Godzilla for the NES...
This channel has always been awesome. This episode is over nine years old as of this comment and the quality has only improved with time!
Man, these old episodes are just as good as the new ones. Love your channel guys.
Nothing quite like finding a youtube channel you have never seen before.. and liking it so much that you exhaust their entire upload library in 3 days.. lol Keep it up guys!
Same here, I love these guys
That's what I did too about 6 months ago.
I'm doing it now
I'm on the beginning of that journey. About 25 episodes into my run. Quality content for sure..
Been there done that 👍
Joe is like the Gollum of the video game world with Sega being his One Ring. You can even hear him say "Genesises" in this episode. "Yes, my Genesisessssss...." It all makes so much sense now.
3:41 What Dave and Joe do not know is that we all are nothing but characters in a Jackie Chan Action Platformer for a 64 bit system.
Jumping Flash. The credits always list the music in the order it appears in the episode.
An Ys episode is planned for sometime in the future. I've got most of the footage recorded already except for the later games.
I haven't heard it mentioned, but Castlevania Bloodlines deserves a big shoutout.
Man I love this channel. And the most epic quote : "That's right exactly right Joe," LOL
so this is my new thing. going back and watching game sack episodes i never saw before i subscribed to the channel years ago.
Some people like beer, others like smack.
Some people smoke pot, but I'm hooked on Game Sack.
I've always liked Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu on NES and TG-16. Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster on PSX is also an underrated gem.

I consider the first 67 episodes to be my "classic 67" list only because there was a lot of experimental attempts at the format until it settled in what we know today, they really stand out
i use emulators, i dont got the money for all the retro systems
7:00 Bucky! That was made by some of the folks that left Konami to form the company TREASURE. That's partly why that game looks and plays and sounds so awesome. yeah totally hahahaha!
Excellent selection of underrated gems, guys...
You'd be surprised by the number of Jackie Chan games out there...
Jumping Flash!!! Yes!!! One of the first games I owned on the Playstation. Brings back so many memories when I see it again. thanks.
Bucky O Hare was also an animated TV show.
Admittedly most of those are PS1 games with the exception of MMF but there's loads more out there. Great show as always! Thanks!
Knuckles Chaotix is awesome, tons of points for Joe for finally bringing it up in this episode!
Gosh I love it.
It was awesome to see some Knuckles Chaotix love! Great episode as usual, guys.
I'm so glad that you guys covered Jumping flash! I used to like this game back when psx was released, but no one seemed to know or care about it.
Love the Shining Force 2 music at the start, what an amazing game!
Great episode! I definitely like to see a future episode covering best music in video games
Oh man, Jumping Flash. What a game. So many childhood memories with that one.
Bucky O'Hare is my favorite platformer!
It was a comic book in 1984 then a short-lived cartoon in 1991 then an arcade and NES game in '92.
I love your Door Into Summer remix, Joe
@GameSack You guys are great. I watch videos everyday. Very entertaining. Keep up the great work👍🏻😀
Yes! ! ! I love love love jumping flash! Such a great game.
Jumping jack flash remember me the "demo start 1" CD you got when you bought a PS1.
Oh man, Bucky O'Hare, I always wanted that one. I was a huge fan of the cartoon as a kid.
You guys rule. Thank you for the great show.
@Sneakyturtleegg I'm glad to hear I'm back in good standing with you. I was worried, really! Thanks for watching as always and we do have a lot of fun making this show.
I'm glad someone else has played Jumping Flash! I loved that game. I was so mad when the local rental place sold it after all the times I rented it.
I know I'm late but starfox did get a sequel, we just had to wait 20+ year's for Nintendo to release it lol.
You're right, if you could mix the SNES platform stages with the Sega CD driving stages, it'd be awesome. That would make for one amazing Batman game, second only to the Arkham series.
Great t-shirt Dave
I felt the same about Jackie Chan video game and I barely remember Cannon ball run but it was till Rumble in the Bronx came out that I heard of him.
Kind of funny that they are talking about Jackie Chane since Joe looks like a younger version of Chuck Norris.
great episode! loved jumping flash back in the day. they just don't make enough games with robot rabbits fighting old men! it had a good sequel which played a lot like the first, both of which rocked!
That Jackie Chan game really does have great music... was not expecting that.
Superb show guys! Great game choices! Keep it up!
I love how you guys use TV magic when you put carts into the systems. The way you used the backwards footage when closing the lid-thing on the NES at 5:30 really took me aback. It stood out like a sore thumb, despite how quick the clip was. I was just like "Whoa, what?! You can't DO that!" lol. xD

I put my bet on "reverse-played"
Great move to be able to to play a guy in a game named Gun Valkyrie. Guess that's why it's an "X"-Box exclusive...
Funny fact about Bucky O'Hare for the NES: it really screwed software pirates over back in the day (much like how Earthbound did in its own way). After beating the game, a password was given to unlock a hard mode that made everything a one-hit-kill on the player. It was really cool to see Joe on the verge of laughing so many times in this video - that's rare (at least starting from episode one :D)
Thank you so much for showing Knuckles Chaotix some props.
Glad your showed gunvalkyrie, I have this game and it's fantastic a sega classic in my books. It looks great aswell.
Oh! I didn't know you guys mentioned Gunvalkyrie already! Yes! I highly agree!
@ricetrippycreeps Not yet. I'm sure someday it will.
@dave4shmups I bet its something to do with emulation being difficult. You guys deserve more love and more views than you get.
Kung Fu on the NES and an old arcade port is also based of Jackie Chan's role in MEALS ON WHEELS
@elabit Thats news to me. I've now caught up and watched every episode and I've never heard a mention on a CDI episode being made on any of them.
The show starts, Shining force 2 music plays, I know I am gonna enjoy this episode
Chaotix soundtrack is like the Sonic 3 soundtrack. They're both awesome but each has one glaring black sheep.
7:51 truer words have never been spoken 🤣
Thanks for showing Gun Valkyrie, I hadn't heard of it before but now I have thanks to you, and I'm very glad since it seems to be another of those Xbox = Dreamcast 2 games! Wikipedia says it was even originally being made for the Dreamcast...

Jumping Flash and Jumping Flash 2 both rule and they are most definitely underrated.
I jumped for joy the day I found Knuckles Chaotix in my local store for $4. Popped it in my 32X and it started on the first try!
music is everything! :)
@MRabbitFrog It's a followup because most big subjects are always open for followups if they can't think of an entirely new subject with the systems they have. This one needed a followup anyway as there are too many underlooked games to put into one episode.
great list! I especially like Jackie Chan and Bucky O'hare
Best Sonic music tracks are Open Your Heart, His World, Chemical Plant, and everything from Sonic CD (and a couple others).
That game Gun Valkyrie reminds me so much of Metroid.....
Really good show! I really enjoyed this episode. :)
@GatorM

Jackie Chan Action Kung Fu is sweet, I always love your guys videos
@Number1StarSB Yep, and it was popular at least in the UK as well with action figures being made of Bucky here.

Very nice games guys. What I find annoying about Knuckles' Chaotix is that it wasn't re-released in any of the muitiple Sonic compilations that were release over the years.
I like your channel guys , Joe is great ! Would be nice to see a special episode with dave real quick
i really loved kung fu chaos on the original xbox it was awesome at least when it came out
knuckles chaotix really has a killer soundtrack
Gunvalkyrie is awesome, but the control is a pain. Wish there was a sequel.
terracon on the playstation is a great game that i never see mentioned.
Nice ep!
While I enjoy the channel and your reviews, I have to laugh at the amount of times you bring up the music in the games, so so game but the music is great!! Buy it for the music if nothing else! The game is great but it has no sound test. Keep up the good work guys :)

wasnt Bucky o'hare a cartoon too (only 13 episodes) before it was a game too?
Went to Babagges as a kid looking for Jackie Chan's Kung Fu and the cashier told me he had no clue what I was talking about and never heard of it! So I ended up getting Godzilla for the NES...
I want a 32X I have played Knuckles Chaotix way back at a friends and was hooked.
Failing to mention Bucky O'hare the cartoon suffered the same fate as the Toxic Crusaders.
You guys should have an ENTIRE Platformer video on any console! I'll send in Bubsy 3D and Ratchet and Clank :o
Batman Returns is fantastic. It does got a trad repetitive thought, but it’s fun and that’s the most important quality
