- Strong not Thin! This is just one of the mindset shifts we should be working on prior to perimenopause. The relentless pursuit of skinny is not serving us.

“Shift your focus from thin to strong.” I think I just discovered my 2024 resolution to myself! Thank you!!!! 🙏🏼
I just turned 41 and I’ve done a 180! Focusing more on strength, nutrition and skin care. Being more present and intentional about things and also working on my happiness, healing and spirituality… life is short, the years go by quick!
180
Good job! 👏 😊
@@Lifewithlisalove Lol
It would be a 180 dipstick if you do a 360 this means you are back to where you started
@@robertlongwill8856 lol you’re right dipstick! Oops my bad
Since most of us Americans don’t talk in kilograms often, I broke down the protein requirements for everyone in 20 pound increments. If you are lighter or heavier, I also broke it down to 5 lbs and 10 lbs at the bottom so you can add or subtract what you need to get closer to your own requirements. Hope my list doesn’t get distorted when I post it, and that it is helpful. :)
1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds
1.3g to 1.6g protein for every 2.2 pounds of weight
Weight in Pounds = grams of protein
100 lbs = 59g to 73g
120 lbs = 71g to 87g
140 lbs = 83g to 102g
160 lbs = 95g to 116g
180 lbs = 106 to 131g
200 lbs = 118g to 145g
Tweaks
5 lbs = 3g to 3.6g
10 lbs = 5.9g to 7.3g
Thanks so much!
@@carinrichardson You are welcome. Happy I could be helpful. 😊
Thanks I now know that no matter if I'm having 1650 calorie day or a 1850 calorie day and everything in-between I am hitting the right protein for my weight.
Now if only this menopause would let me sleep and give me my motivation back so I can get back to doing more exercise that would be brill😊
Thank you. I’m recovering from a hysterectomy and I’m trying to shift my thinking but it’s really hard after almost 50 years of you’re fat when I was complaining about things that turned out not to be lack of willpower but instead lack of hormone balance. I appreciate anything that makes it easier. 😊
Thanks!!!
That's right! Get strong, stay strong. I started barbell training at 44 and now at 46 have never been stronger in my life. My husband just purchased me some pink plates for my barbell. Best gift ever.
I cannot believe you are 55, your skin looks amazing.
She uses a special cream containing estrogen. It's on her tiktok
She looks like a 35 year old pretending to be 55 😅
THANK YOU!!! Say it louder for the back row!! Strength training means increasing weight at intervals, NOT 57 reps with a 5 pound weight!!
I WISH there was more educationd done about perimenopause & menopause/postmenopause. Even as a retired nurse, a mother who is a retired nurse, I never knew the HELL that was waiting on me. I went through it naturally. Took 10 YEARS, I had no children. It is still HELL! The amount of symptoms are ridiculous! I have body dysmorphia & post menopause has only enhanced it. Women got screwed after child baring years
Oh but they all just say "why did you let yourself go?" Ugh it's hormones!
Exactly!!
Add to that increased risk for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis thanks to lack of estrogen and boom! we’re set for life (or death!)
Don't ask a DR to help you.. apparently we're just supposed to be born with this knowledge. Most Drs don't give a crap.
HRT Doing me wonders
Thank you. I sincerely appreciate that you're shedding light on a serious matter. Menopause is not taken seriously.
Honestly, this premenopause journey is no joke. My pelvis has collapsed lm so swollen and bloated everywhere, l never felt so unconnected with my own body at this level. I'm only 41 years old, and I wake up in body pain every day. We need an award for dealing with this misery.😢
I'm sorry, I know exactly how you feel. Took 10 years for me to go through it, I did it naturally. Post menopause is not any better
I feel this exact same way I feel so lost
I haven't even hit menopause I'm 45 and my joints hurt so much I can't lose weight when I never had a problem with it it's so hard
Hi Even I had same issues I did MRI scan and came know that I had slip disc .
I was blaming perimanipouse for all pain in buttock n leg but main culprit was slip disc.
Sorry, but what's a collpased pelvis?
I stumbled across your videos 4, maybe 5 days ago, and have learnt more from you than i have from anywhere else, including the Doctor and a nutritionist. THANK YOU
Her advice is priceless and she has lots of free information on her website.
Excellent helpful wise advice !
I’m 55 and had the hormonal roller coaster of craziness!!
More Protein and Vitamins in my diet with strength exercises makes a huge difference!!
Lowering processed foods and sugar has calmed me down to normal again !
Get hormones checked and regular routine bloodwork to monitor your health !!
All good !!! 🩷
We will survive menopause!!!
Amen !!!😇
I just turned 50, whilst active and thin I've really noticed several changes the past 12 months. I'm so glad I've found this channel, the most intelligent, rational and informative info I've found on CZcams, thanks so much !!@
Yay !!!! You told yourself well !. We need to erase what we were told in the 1970's !.
Amen!!!!! I just upped my protein intake and started watching added sugars. It's amazing how many foods have useless added sugars.
As one with formal university education in exercise nutrition and pathology of disease, I can tell you that this is the most honest, true and frank short I have ever seen in my life. And it also something I have been trying to get thru to doctors and other patients for over 20 years. Correlation is NOT causation, and the Ansel Keys type research in metabolism and health has GOT to stop. Not one regualr doctor cares about my level of insulin resistance - so long as Im not diabetic "yet" theyre ok with any sugar or insulin level. urgh - makes me soo mad. Fortunately my cardiologist agrees with me.
You are so right. Ladies please listen to her.
This woman is a godsend
F I N A L L Y SOME COMMON SENSE !!! 😎
As an almost 40 years old nutritionist I have to agree with you on all points. This is the way to age gracefully and the path to a happy, longeve life 🎉❤
You had me right up to the point you used the word "kilogram".
As a 57 year old, I definitely have muscle loss, time to start using some weights. Been eating REALLY clean and feel good but the muscle mass needs improving. Thanks for the super info
Your videos are life changing and life saving! Peri menopause has hit me so hard and I didn't even realize that was even a thing.
You got my back, Dr. Claire! This advice is for me. Thanks for helping out in different ways. ❤
Perimenopausal at 33 and you have just motivated me to refocus on nutrition and strength training. Thank you
I think you and the gals at @trimhealthymama should do a podcast or some sort of collaboration together. I’m 41 and a whole truckload of symptoms just hit me this past year and it’s left me pretty devastated. I’m desperately trying to learn what I need to in order to feel better but it’s so overwhelming and there’s just so much I don’t know and it’s hard to know where to even start! Thankyou for providing the info you do.
Yes ladys i use weights and its helping me. Im 38
I agree with this. Wright training, stretching and lean protein has been my friend. 😊
I am 42. Overweight and have IBS D and anxiety my obgyn said theres no way menopause is happening at my age. I am frustrated because i feel like she isnt listening. I am noticing so many changes that fit in with pre-menopause but i feel like no one is listening.
It happened to me at that age.
I was post menopausal at 42. Boy, I wish I could have gotten help ahead of that in order to shift my current health struggles. Get Dr Mary Claire Haver's reels, interviews, and book out to everyone... and talk to legislators asking for help to correct wrong & biased women's health info for truly utilizing insurance to serve us, not Big Pharma.
The women in my family start peri menopause around 40. Most Drs won't even entertain a conversation about menopause that young! It's even worse when you are a disabled Veteran and go to the VA hospital for everything! 🤦🏼♀️ I'm now 47, gaining weight like crazy, can't sleep, hot flashes, my brain just isn't right and most days I'm chronically overwhelmed! Menopause definitely isn't for wimps! ❤️
I'm glad my symptoms were mild going through early menopause. Perhaps it was because I had changed my diet eliminating gluten & reduced sugars and was using essential oils instead of OTC and prescription meds because I was chronically ill and had high inflammatory markers and had negative responses to meds. My rock bottom aha moment unfortunately was not when my kidneys shut down during pregnancy sending me into preterm labor (thank God our 1st child was ok at 6½ early) but it was years later when I could barely walk. Discovered my Vitamin D level was at 19 (60-80 are my optimal level) and B12 shots only gave me energy for 1 day. I know if we hadn't gone to the functional medicine Dr we'd found outside of the Twin Cities, I'd be dead. After several surgeries and osteoporosis diagnosis, I'm struggling and rainy weather storm fronts negatively impact me. 🙏🏼 I can reverse this without daily injections. I eat balanced- good proteins and healthy fats, cut out seed oils, GMOs, HFCS, etc.
Found your channel 🎉🎉🎉
I try to walk for an hour a day and eat mostly whole foods prepared at home using quality ingredients. Hiking uphill seems to help with ankle and leg strength. Terrified to fall and break a hip so I stay active and flexible. Being around nature keeps me calm. Moving out of a big city to a nice country setting has really really helped. Simple healthy living has helped me combat whatever the heck this menopause thing is. I’ve been with my husband since I was 17 so he is watching the transition firsthand and appreciates his man cave while I have my cry sessions for no apparent reason because life is just fine. ❤❤❤❤
You are one gorgeous lady with an educated mind .The full package. Thank you for everything ❤
THATS FANTASTIC ADVICE!
I love that you're talking about building muscle mass and focusing on being strong. I've been telling my own patients to focus more on building muscle as part of their weight loss. As a 45 year old guy who has been just a little overweight for a couple decades, that focus on BUILDING muscle was a game changer for me.
Yup, always been my focus. Being thin is overrated, being strong, feeling strong is awesome 🥰
Hello would you please if at all by chance share your skin care routine for you being 55 in my own opinion I wouldn't have even thought you were close to 40 your skin looks so clear and you do look well rested again it's just my opinion😊
She may use a filter ... not sure tho.
She looks her age and more. It’s filters.
@Sae
Stop being delulu - you look your age. You should be proud, but no one is going to mistake you for someone in their 20s or 30s.
She looks beautiful. Who cares how old someone is?
@step
Age matters if she’s supposed to be helping older women like my mom. She’s not going listen to a delulu woman who thinks she looks 20 and can’t stand in her own truth.
My mom had an unnecessary hysterectomy, which pushed her into menopause.
You are SO right! Thank you for putting out your videos🙇🏻♀️👏👍
Do pilates! it's so great for strengthening and stretching. it feels great
I've been a weight lifting nutritionally focused girlie since the early 2000s....it's what pulled me out of my PPD, so I never stopped! And now I'm in menopause with visible abs😊 Let me brag...it's the only thing I got going right for me and probably the only thing I did right in my 20s lol🤦♀️
As a 64 year old woman I am astonished at the information that’s coming out now about menopause, its consequences and how to counteract them. I’m so glad that younger women now know how to actually prepare for a better menopause. Obviously I wish I had known, but I do know better and can do what I can.
On reflection…. Women do have a very hard time physically throughout their lives. Well done to us all xxx
I love you and have mentioned you in my videos to my Winnipeg Girls! I am doing my journey through menopause for all my Winnipeg Girls. Just to help keep the conversation going. Definitely going to keep watching you. 😊
Unfortunately as a young person I never listened but now as a 53 year old woman, I'm now 100% focused on my health, strength and nutrition. This combined with being on HRT recently has changed my life! Gone are the night sweats, poor sleep and aching bones. I still suffer with fatigue but I'm hoping that will also improve in time.
Sometimes I truly wish I had not lived to the age of menopause. My whole life came crashing down . Thanks to you I am working on all these things and taking HRT. Hope to feel better asap
Ohhh! I feel you! Same here! Just started HRT this week. I have faith! Life will get better again 😊 Happy 2024! 🎉
I'm 49 and going through all this. It makes perfect sense what you are saying.
Same here! After finding dr Haver a few weeks ago I just started HRT this week and can't wait for a good night sleep and my brain fog to lift! 😊
I had my second child at 27 and went through menopause by the time I was 35.
I'm 58 now and wish I had all this information when I was in my 30's.
🎀Dr. Mary Clare🎀 you are the 💛BIG SISTER💛 and pioneer we all need!!!🎯💯
Excellent re-framing. Telling my mother immediately
Honestly, ma'am, this is by far the most concse, to the point informative video! Thank you!
Amen to that ! I was 96lbs starving I’m 110-115 healthy happy strong doing yoga now every few days NOT 2hrs a day 30-31 days out of the month ! I now earth a balanced diet ( can’t do a lot of dairy hurts my stomach but I find it in other ways ) I’m enjoy good healthy fats if my body is like yo you need some protein I EAT IT ! If my saying sweet I eat it I’m hearing my body now
I turned 50 last year and I'm glad I intuitively started this shift a while ago 😊 thanks for sharing 🙏🙋♀️
I absolutely love you!!! I agree you everything. My doctor told me told me there was nothing I could do to help my menopause. I didn’t believe her. My husband found you.
My mom had osteoporosis brought on by menopause. She started weight training with my dad and has much improved DEXA scan numbers now! Can say from experience that it works.
Thank you so much for saying to focus on nutrition and Not calories. Weight training and NoT cardio!
Thanks for this. I wish I knew this much earlier. I am 59 and just started on better nutrition, high fiber and high protein food. Walking at least 4 days a week and slowly adding strength training. Maybe late but better than nothing.
At 83 I would bet everything I have that you are correct.
I had a heart transplant at 41 4 months later at 42 I had a tricuspid value transplant. My cardiologist has cleared me to walk, bike and swim. No fast walking, no jogging, no running and 0 Cardo! He said we are born with only so many heart beats . People have came after me for this statement but I believe it. I am also insulin resistant from being so ill. I am on metformin and trulisity. I eat health most days and chase my 1 yr old. I'm 46 . I am 175lbs and a size 10. I love my body.
Thank you for the inspiration!! May we all become stronger and stronger each day !!!
THANKS DOC AM LEARNING FROM THE BEST
Yesssss! This is what I want to focus on now. I am post menopausal, but still.
This is fire 🔥
Thanks Mary Claire!
Thank you! If only 30 some years ago things could have been different. I don't know. I'm just doing a lot better now. So thankful for your channel.
I'm 33 with autoimmune disease and I needed to hear this ty
Spot on. This is true for men and women. Can't have fitness and health without strength training.
absolutely truth, I can see it on my mum. So I am 50 still ok meaning not even perimenopause. So using garden work with heavy wheelbarrow to lift, shift and move.
I am 60 female and I swim 7 months out of the year. Not only am I strong as an ox--my bad knee from sports injury at 17-no knee replacements here. I do see a few gray hairs at the pool but very few and mostly men. I am swimming 3 miles a week with doesn’t sound like but it will show you who is boss. Go try it! It’s my healthy longevity!!!! Love to all ❤
YOU are my HERO!!! I cannot wait to share this with my 34
y/o nurse daughter. We both have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s hypothyroid and I pray that she will focus on your principles then, when she is 60+ she will not deal with some of the health concerns I have.
You are changing the world and making it a better place!
(p.s. I am from Laf too!)🌻😊
Thank you! xoxo Community Support Team
I’m so grateful I found you! I’m going to seriously do everything I can to research my little butt off while I’m in school to teach yoga so I can bring the best menopausal woman’s yoga class there ever was! Lol thank you for helping me decide what areas I want to focus on in my studies! ❤
I really thank you for opening my mind n others on what health truly means. Pls keep doing what you do ❤
❤ Wisdom Supreme! ❤ She must be a top-class trainer -- cannot possibly be an MD with brains like that. LOL
Look at taking 5 grams of creatin and 3 grams of marine collagen peptides every morning. This will support your muscle mass and help with skin and joint health.
As a 42yo who has felt like my hormones are “off” for a few years now and is starting to look forward rather than back (not as easy a transition as I thought, just gotta say. I do miss being skinny) - thank you for this. In my heart I know this is good advice and timely.
switch your focus baby - got it
Tu so much doc strong not thin! Got it! Oh btw u look great at 55. I keep saying we need more docs like you❤❤❤
I made the switch to yoga from cardio and feel great!
Brilliant words spoken
Excellent advice!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!👍💜🙏
Thank you so much for this valuable information. I am 66 and wish I had this kind of information when I was going through menopause.
You need to be my doctor.
I love this woman
The absolute truth. Thank you 💯 ❤❤
Great information. I wish I had known this 30 years ago.
Literally summed everything I’ve learned about my health in the last 30 years.
Excellent recommendations from an intelligent female provider. Well done and appreciated. 🎯
I’m so emotional right now because within the last month or so I’ve completely switched my thinking about nutrition and exercise to exactly this and it’s so important to know I’m on the correct path after so many years of failure. It’s a long road but one I finally feel I’m going down it with my eyes opened and path clear, as opposed to, blindly chasing different paths chaotically.
Hi any magnesium supplement that u recommend
Hi , I have been using CanPrev, Magnesium Bis-Glycinate , for years! I take two capsules right before bed ti help me sleep and it does work ❤
I have to tell my old self the same thing. So helpful.
I needed to hear this! Thank you
Totally agree with all these points of information ❤
Good job Mary Claire!
Hell yes!!! All of this is key.
If you have mobility or health issues, try water aerobics. You can do so much more in the water & not hurt your body. If all you can do is walk in the water, that will help you so much
Excellent advice, we should all follow from 35 years forward ,i am learning this being in perimenapouse, thank you for this video .❤
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? All 58 yrs! 🙋🏼♀️💜👍🏽🥰🦋🫶🏽⭐️🙏🏽💜🧶🌼🌺💙
That's good advice for anyone.
Amen! Doctors wanted me on meds for osteoporosis - I bought the ten foot pogo stick instead and I have not broken a bone since.
Weight training kicks butt over cardio. Strength and muscle FTW!
Wonderful advice. My current menopausal self, will accept and implement, as well as share with my pre-menopausal friends and fam. #walkinginthesun
So true! Thanks Doc! ❤
I was shocked when I discovered the Les Mills workout programs. I was used to aerobic classes, not using weights & HIIT training
Thank you for this!
Great advice 🎉 Thank you so much I agree 💯
Wow!😮 Well said 🤗❤️
