      Hello Kate, what did you say you recommend for a iron supplement that won't cause belly issues?
      I have chronic constipation and the last and only time I've tried Iron supplements it made my constipation a thousand times worse. So I was thinking about trying the one you mentioned.
      My ferritin levels are always around 13-17.

    Rosemary. I've got a rosemary shrub. I just take a bunch and steep it in water for hours until it's dark. I put it in a spritzer with a couple splashes of vinegar. I spritz my hair with that before tying it back. Rather than a fistful of hair in my brush, I might have two or three hairs in my brush. It works for me.

      ❤ It's a very big deal to us to lose any amount of hair. I also lost around half my already baby fine hair almost 10 years ago. Wigs have been a huge blessing and these days they are comfortable and completely natural looking. BUT I went through a grieving period nonetheless over losing mine for sure. My guess is you may also be feeling like that. This year I got a scare because my blood sugar levels were showing high on a doctor's blood test. This news scared me into revamping my sugar intake of course and adding a blueberry smoothy with spinach and kale in the morning and a blackberry smoothie with spinach and kale and walnuts in the afternoon. Also instead of a lot of fast food I cook lean healthy meals. Also I take vitamin d3/k3 and a collagen biotin supplement. This eating in turn made my stress levels decline and I added daily scalp massage. Well after all those years since losing my hair it began growing in and it has thickened in back to normal. I obviously can't say this may work for you but I had to share my story with you because I thought "what if" this in deed WILL work for you. ❤

Looks like doctors need to see the proof of what is exactly going on. I know it sounds gross but I knew someone who took a picture of her blood soaked maxi pads and the toilet to show her health care provider how often she was loosing so much blood on her monthly cycle and that she literally couldn't get out of bed and had to resign her job because she took so many days off from work. I had a full thyroidectomy in 2020 (cancer), and am now experiencing (and have been for 1 year or more), crazy hair loss, along with brain fog, joint pain, lack of recall & to a small degree depression. I've always been known for my long curly hair, and now my hair is so thin it's "see through." I went to a new well known hairdresser that brushed it off to "just needing a new hair cut", which I did to the tune of $450 with products to help thicken(which they didn't). My GP is old school & chalked it up to normal "aging". I have asked for a T3 test, to which he said no. I will ask my Endocrinologist for a full thryoid panel due in Sept & go from there. In the meantime THANK YOU for all your dietary & supplement suggestions. Its' nice to know that this is NOT NORMAL aging!

I also appear to have Morton's foot, which means I cannot process B6, so I take p-5-p. I wonder how relevant that is to this prolonged hair issue. I thought I was B6 deficient for decades and was always taking B6 to no effect.

      Great presentation! Thank you! Could you tell me how one brand of the same supplement, I.e., PURE - HAIR, SKIN, NAILS compares with NUTRAFOL?

    • @DrKateLyzengaDean
      @DrKateLyzengaDean  Před 9 měsíci

      You're welcome! As for your question comparing the two, there are many differences, but the ones that come to mind immediately are that you have to take double the Nutrafol (4 per day) to get the same levels of the main ingredients as Hair/Skin/Nails (2 per day), Nutrafol uses 2 proprietary blends (meaning you don't know exactly how much of each ingredient is in them), and Nutrafol lacks Silica, which is an important ingredient for hair strength. Those are just a few of the reasons Hair/Skin/Nails Ultra gets my vote! Here's the link to check out the ingredients: us.fullscript.com/plans/drkateld-functional-hair-growth-supplement-guide

    My practitioner urged me to do a saliva test which showed my testosterone level was off by the most minute amount. According to research, testosterone can turn into DHT if your testosterone levels are off. DHT attaches to healthy hair follicles and makes the hair fall out. This has been my personal experience. Once I was put on testosterone cream, (it took a few months to get the correct dosage for my body) my hair stopped falling out. Currently using a compounding pharmacy in SC for testosterone cream. When I interviewed my current GP, I asked him if he would be willing to sign off on the prescription the pharmacy writes as they have 25 years experience with women's HRT.

    It’s a DHT problem if you’re in menopause and especially if you’re taking HRT. I use a DHT blocking shampoo & conditioner. It’s a godsend! The downside is it’s expensive! It could be caused from low iron or stress but those can be ruled out by symptoms & bloodwork.

    I find that many doctors don't know when it comes to hair loss issues.... Something that needs attention too is the hair products we use, most shampoos are very drying on the scalp and contain chemicals of which the effects are unknown. I have changed to something which has the consistency of aquas cream and I can tell you that it has made a massive difference for me. No more dandruff, itchy scalp, scaly ear lobes and hands full of hair coming out and running down the drain. Check your products!

      yes I agree. I ditched all shampoo and conditioners in favour for baking soda wash and apple cider vinegar rinse just a few weeks ago. My drastic hair loss eased to just a few per day. Then I began adding salt to my diet and it has made all the difference. I had hair loss for at least 7 years before changing to a carnivore diet (18 months ago) and saw slight improvement, as was getting all the essential micronutrients needed, but it was salt that made the greatest difference. The recommended levels of salt in our diet by mainstream professionals is severely inadequate it seems after research done by people such as Cardiovascular Medical Scientist James Dinicolantonio. Our bodies just don't function without adequate amounts to assist and carry nutrients.

      Your genetics is the gun but your environment pulls the trigger. Most of this is poor diet/lifestyle. Hair loss is not congenital- it’s a result of lifestyle ultimately. We shouldn’t throw in the towel just because someone in your family has hair loss. To me that means the opposite; one should be more vigilant about what they eat. All of the conditions mentioned in the video result from eating the Standard American Diet (SAD).

    The lightbulb is going off here for me. I've been noticing my hair is thinner than it used to be. I have for years had hair coming out brushing or while showering due to thyroid hormone replacement (no tbyroid). I have also been avoiding iron rich foods and iron in supplements due to it interferring with the thyroid tests and hormone pills. My full T tests are not "normal", as they want levels at a certain level to ward off the body in making hormones.
    Also have been dealing with a bunch of new skin things that have found out are the first signs of vitamin C deficiency! Which I havent been taking C or eating much vitamin C rich foods. I've added eating two oranges a day when I can.
    And I am nutrient deficiency. I dont enjoy cooking, mostly because of no dishwasher and bad kitchen sink.
    I have just added biotin gummies, but think I need much better foods, and full vitamin supplements not just one thing.

    Last time I went into a hair saloon was when I was 17. They were always complaining about my thin and dry hair so i stopped going there. Then a lot of money wasted at the Derm only to hear ,,try this shampoo etc". I reasearched the causes by my self and so, at 24 I decided to get my thyroid tested. The doctor was so surprised like ,,why? You're so young you can't have thyroid problems". Turns out I did. Hypo type. She said if you start medication, your hair will get better. It didn't. Also micropolycistic ovary which I can't treat for other reasons. I kinda lost faith in the medical system and started on topical minoxidil. It's not working great but it does something. Today I'm 34 and this is still so painful to me, I'm crying almost everyday because of it.I'm terrified of what my hair will be like in 10years from now. Anyway, I'll try to test my ferritin and go to a trychologyst again. Let's not lose our hope in this battle!

    What about extremely high Ferritin levels. What needs to be done. Been told it's not a concern.

    • @DrKateLyzengaDean
      @DrKateLyzengaDean  Před 8 měsíci

      Depends what "extremely" means - and in the context of other labs. If iron is also high, it could mean that you're taking in too much iron (food, supplements, etc). Or it could be that you have an iron storage problem. Or it could be normal for you - again, it really depends on how it fits with the big picture of your health. 👍🏼

    So I had my ferritin levels checked recently and they are on the very lowest level of normal (21 NG/ml) So I believe you pinpointed the cause of my hair loss. So I have been experimenting with ferrous bisglycinate. However, within hours of taking it, I am incredibly bloated and my poops are irregular for days. My whole world is centered around having my morning poop. I don’t eat meat. I have been eating more pumpkin seeds and olives to incorporate more iron. Is there any hope that my gut may adjust to ferrous bisglycinate over time? Any tips to help reduce the gut upset? I so appreciate all your information-it is so wonderful to finally have an answer for my hair loss!

      You could try a lower dose or taking it every-other day. Those symptoms could also be a sign of a deeper gut issue that needs to be addressed - check out my video specifically on ferritin for more info: czcams.com/video/zuJXtBjZb1I/video.html

      @@DrKateLyzengaDeanthank you so much for your reply! I watched your other video and am feeling a renewed motivation. I’m going to start emptying the capsules slightly since I can’t find a lower dose than what I’m taking now. I also ordered some L. Plantarum. I so appreciate your videos and all the wonderful knowledge you share!! Low ferritin explains SO many symptoms I deal with so I’m excited to get this supplement to work for me!

      In Functional Medicine we would assess your gut - to figure out why you're not absorbing or utilizing the iron you're taking. Could also be a quality problem with the supplement

      Be sure to check your ferritin levels and ask your doctor for a comprehensive thyroid panel - all of my recommendations can be found in the Hair Loss Deep Dive Tutorial: www.drkateld.com/hair-loss-deep-dive

    Dr Kate. My friend in her 70's has Alopecia Areata. Do you have a cure for Alopecia Areata so her hair will start again. Doctors in Australia have not been able to help. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

    Is seeing an endocrinologist a good idea?

    • @DrKateLyzengaDean
      @DrKateLyzengaDean  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Sometimes...if I'm being honest, most of my clients who struggle with hair loss didn't get much help from an endocrinologist. If you could find a Functional Medicine endocrinologist, that would be a better bet!

    hmm, been told older women dont need added iron to supplements.. now confused @ this. When pregnant 25 yrs ago (at 40) had the best hair ever when taking prenatal vit /minerals... have wondered if taking some again will do the same thing (or if bad idea bec of high iron & folic acid) ?

    • @DrKateLyzengaDean
      @DrKateLyzengaDean  Před rokem +3

      That's a good point - and why it's best practice to check ferritin and iron levels before supplementing - many of my clients are surprised by what they find!

      I would start by checking for nutrient depletions - that happens frequently during cancer treatment. 🧡
