- This week I headed out to the Chippewa National Forest in North Central Minnesota. It was an awesome time minus a few mishaps that led to broken equipment. I was able to fix a few issues in the camper, not everything though, I still need to work on the Onan Generator and toilet. I found multiple camping spots in the forest. I didn't see many people at all. This forest is turning into one of my favorites. There seems to be camping spots around every bend. I tried to catch some fish, but my reel broke, I tried to get some sunset drone footage, but my drone broke. Other than that, this trip was a success. I still had fun even after breaking stuff, I hope you had fun following me along. As always, well see you next week!

Good videos, Kenny, no cursing or swearing. We, like you, prefer to camp away from the crowd. Here's a tale that will warm your heart. A few years ago my wife and I were traveling In Wyoming just north of Rock Springs Wy. I pulled off on a BLM road to camp for the night. After having a bite to eat we set up our camp chairs to enjoy the beautiful evening. Off in the distance we saw head lights coming across the desert. I was sure they would turn off on many of the access roads but nope they drove right up and parked on the road right in front of our camp. It was a school bus full of middle school kids who came with their telescopes to view the stars and moon. They were so friendly and happy and invited us to join them. We felt blessed to have them there and missed them when they left. Hope to see you down the road but will stay our distance to camp.
That sounds awesome. Honestly I haven't ran into to many crazies while camping. And some of the people I met have been super cool. I had the video in Michigan where I met a guy who had a truck tent. The next day he took me along on a hike only know by locals. That was cool. I'm an introvert...but can be an extrovert at the same time...its wierd.

I never gave truck campers a second look until I saw your channel. Now it's my first choice. Pull in , level & your half way home. I'm sorry we didn't get to fish but at least we hung out at a great spot. I was wondering if you broke that mirror too.
You got Rick. Truck campers are awesome. I absolutely love mine. Imagine driving around in the woods and finding a beautiful spot to pull off the road. The spot is a million dollar view....You can't drive a Class A there, a Class C wouldn't make either....you could setup a tent and sleep on the ground. You could stay in a van with tight quarters.....or you could have a 4 Star Hotel room in the bed of your 4x4 truck. That's how I feel about it.
What an epic location, glad you took the risk to go back there. That spot with the stairs looks perfect for pushing out in a kayak. Looks like you have a mini 2 which is what I had, such a great drone but I highly recommend upgrading to the mini 3 now that it broke, that's what I'm getting soon. Sucks your fishing pole and drone broke, but sometimes you gotta just laugh it off 😂I can definitely relate to days like that. Looks like rain Thursday night so you know I'll be out there. May do a two nighter as possible rain Friday and Saturday also.
I saw the rain coming, and unfortunately I work outside most of the day so I'll be getting wet. I see your rainy videos get a TON of views. I'm hoping one day to see those numbers.

I was thinking the same thing. I questiond if I was going to make a camping video or repair video. But the camper calls out to me! I had to get on the road. Even when the breaks fell off the truck on top of a mountain in Wyoming.....I'd rather be there then work.

Thanks Scott, I'm thankful Minnesota has so many opportunities for free camping. I wish I could travel further from home but haven't been able to do any long road trips the last year. I wonder how many of these camping videos i can put out before I run out of spots... I've been thinking that for the last 6 months. But every Friday I seem to find more spots.

That's good to know. I'll give the wireless mic another try this weekend. I drained the transfer case last night and used break clean on it. Ill be using JB weld to fix the hairline crack tonight. Fingers crossed it works

Thanks Guys, I thought it would be better to do the fixes in the forest. Plus, it gives me a chance to work through issues without all the gadgets in the garage. At first I thought I was going to crack shower surround pulling the cabinet off the wall. I was thinking to myself it would be nice to have the heat gun to loosen the glue...then I realized the knife would work, it's like skinning a deer. It's fun working through issues with what you have on hand.

@@KennyOfAllTrades We like working through issues and from a pair of old military people we like to improvise, adapt and overcome. Way to go figuring it out without the benefit of your garage being close by. However, now that we full time what is left of our garage is in where the backseat used to be in our truck. So, We carry all our tools everywhere we go. 😉

Probably a good idea Brian. I'm almost positive the reason that valve broke was ice expansion. We have had an exceptionally warm fall. (Other then 4 or 5 days) It's gonna catch me with my guard down and break more then just a low water drain one of these days.

Mandi and Tilli may be joining along this coming weekend. The high temperature will be -5 degrees, and the lows will be around -20. I'm trying to think of activities we can do. The girls may stay in the camper while I go on a hike. I'll have to think about where we will go.

I love camping in the Chippewa. I used to do a lot of bike packing there. I was up there about month ago tenting. Looks like your were in the vicinity of the Woodtick Trail as I recognized that campsite with the stairs. There are quite a few new pullouts up that road now. But the campsite you found was sweet. Too bad the fishing pole and drone were not working. Your setup really allows you to extend the camping season yet be comfortable. I have really enjoyed your content and look forward to camping on Tuesdays.
You are right, the first few spots were on a road off of the Woodtick trail. That was my first time on that road. I tried driving it last winter but it wasn't plowed, and the snow was to deep.
Initially I was gonna check out sixmile lake campground. It looks like it may have been a National Forest Campground at one point, but it is no longer maintained by the Forestery Department. It looks like there are nice camping sites on the lake.
I'm glad I found that other sight. I still haven't looked for the name of the lake, I got to drop a pin on the phone yet. It was in that same part of the Forest as the others. Maybe 4 or 5 miles away from the site with the stairs.
Another great video Kenny, you are so fortunate to have the resources of land and such great places to camp. Minnesota is on our bucket list for sure. We feel your pain on " what will break next" we have been there too, but always find a way around it.

Thanks. In the first few clips there was a bunch of popping. I tried to remove as much as i could. It turned out better then I thought. It is nice to have the wireless mic, otherwise I always have to be talking close to the camera. Maybe I'll give it another try. Thanks for the feedback!
Ha! That's the same medicine cabinet I just put in our Jayco TT. Used some F channel and super glued on shelf for little lip so stuff don't fall out. Also use little bungie to hold closed when traveling. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work

Great video Kenny! I share your dislike for too many people while out shopping. You found another great spot and again I am envious. I drove around New Hampshire last weekend and drove up to a pond on a rough back road thinking about how nice it would be to bring the camper up and spend the night by the water like Kenny does and I finally reached the turn for the pond and was greeted with a sign stating that there is no camping there. Oh well, I will go back in the spring with the Kayak as it looked to be a nice pond to fish. I did find a road with free camping and there was a couple good sites but nothing by water. I hope to find some comparable sites one of these days. Have a great week and keep the videos coming.
Thanks! I cannot believe how lucky I get sometimes. Just when I think I'm gonna start running out of places to go I find a gem like that. Good look with your adventures. Hopefully you can find a spot on the water as well. I'm gonna try to hit up another Stare Forest Friday and Saturday. I looked at it in the past on my phone, I didn't see any water. So maybe I'll do a hiking and biking video for Tuesday.
Man Kenny, you found the ultimate site there....that was awesome my friend! I could stay for a week on a spot like that. The gunfire is a little disarming (one of the downfalls to our line of work I guess LOL) A grouse hunt sounds good......I have a sweet little Rem Wingmaster in 28ga....perfect little upland bird gun :)

Kenny that was a great video I wish I had a lake front site like that. Just a thought about heating the basement area. I saw on Amazon some solar powered heaters that might work in the basement area. Just a thought. Good luck getting things fixed or replaced.

Always have a backup fishing pole. I bought one of those small three foot poles. When it's cooler out here in Arizona I keep it in the truck.

Yay, a couple of things scratched off the "to do" list, and repairs made in a very scenic spot! It would seem the universe is talking to you, maybe there's something which needs your attention. Those are some narrow roads, have you ever met another oncoming vehicle, sure doesn't seem to be much space to turn around, so I guess someone has to back up. That was a very lovely spot. It's a shame your drone got damaged, will you stay with the same or going with a change? You do capture some impressive drone footage. Have a great week, looking forward to the next one!

When I'm driving down tight trails and logging roads I'm always looking for pulloffs. Logging trucks always have the right of way. They never back up and rarely move over or slow down.....atv will hop in the woods...and which ever vehicle has more recently pasted a pull off will back up.
Normally when I meet someone on trails like that we both come to a stop....then who ever feels they can backup moves first. Often times people are shocked to see the big camper coming through the woods so they back up first.

You know Kenny, its sure good you brought that fishing gear with as that fillet knife was the perfect tool for the cabinet replacement, you just didn't think to use the fishing rod to reach up to knock the drone out of the tree as that would have been the perfect tool for that. I have to say though, not sure why they call it fishing gear as it certainly doesn't work to catch fish with 😉
That would have been a good idea. The rod wouldn't have touched the drone. But maybe could have shook the branch.
I thought for sure I was going to crack the shower surround pulling the cabinet down.
@@KennyOfAllTrades Of course if you had a power saw one could always cut the tree down to get the drone ( sadly there are people out there who would actually do such a thing and end up falling the tree on top of their vehicle in the process, never mind the insanity of cutting a lovely large tree down in a campsite for no good reason ! ). Who would have thought industrial glue was used to hold the cabinet when all those screws should easily do the job, of course if you find the cabinet with mirror smashed on the floor one day then you might go hmmm.
Now you got me wondering if I should pull it down and use some 3M 5200 to just make sure it won't fall. Lol
@@KennyOfAllTrades If it feels solid to the wall I wouldn't worry about it, I assume it doesn't weigh that much and that you don't put much of any heavy items in it. Besides the chances are its going to get crappy on the hinges from the door jiggling around and once again have to replace it is my guess and easier not to risk damaging the surround by gluing as you might get it glued too good and if you did glue it, not to get crazy with the glue.

You got that right. It's all easily replaceable. Broken fishing rod, broken drone....1st world problems.... things could be a lot worse. As a young man I had an extremely short fuse and would lose my cool quickly. But as I got older, I realized I was wasting to much energy. I stay pretty laid back these days, it suits me well.

I use DirecTV at home, and I carry a spare (old model) digital receiver and an old dish on a tripod with me. It will work anywhere you can find
an open view of the southern sky. DirecTV also has a service on internet, but the dish will literally work ANYWHERE.

Thanks for commenting Joe. So the series I started was called Jack Ryan, it's on Amazon Prime. It's based off the Tom Clancy books. I use the DJI Drones. I busted the Mini 2. It was my spare. I have the Mini 3, but it was at home waiting for a new set of propeller blades. I did get the yesterday so I should be back in business.....just no more spare Drone.

That's my biggest expense. I spend anywhere between 1200 to 1500 a month on fuel. That's the biggest downfall about making a camping channel where I scout out new locations every weekend. I usually spend 4 to 5 hours driving around before I find the spot. I got lucky this week. It was the first spot I checked. Some weeks I'll search through 4 or 5 sites before finding the right one. Seeing how I make these videos on the weekends, I'm looking for a dispersed site just like everyone else. I wish I had Tuesdays and Wednesdays off work, not Saturdays and Sundays. Lol
will you re glue the cabinet later? seems more secure for the rough and tumble trails.
I'll probably use a product that will help hold it in place without being glued down. Something not permanent. But I should add something because it will probably shake loose.

I wish I had time to get the roof taken care of. I will need to get it done next summer. Unfortunately its to cold in Minnesota to do it now. I will have to wait through the next 7 months before seeing proper temperatures to take on that job. For now I have a few little projects in the camper. The generator need to be serviced. I have to replace the toilet seal. I want to change out some door pulls. Just little things.

The owner is a Veteran, he builds the remote starter to order, but it only takes a week to get. I dropped the remote in the lake a year ago. It stopped working. I called the number listed on the website at 8pm hoping to get an answering service. Instead, the owner picked up. The number listed is his personal cell phone. He sent out a new remote the next day. Super good service.

I really like that rig set up. How do you like that 3500? I've recently decided to pick up a 2500 duramax. I've actually been a skilled trades mechanic at dmax for 22 yrs, but never bought the diesel. 😁
I love the 3500. I did have the camper installed in a 08 Silverado 2500. It handled the camper fine. I drove it out west a few times. The 6.0 handled the mountains ok.
Back in 2018 I was at the GM dealership and I saw the 3500. They were asking 28k for it with only 99,000 miles. I couldn't turn it down. That's the only reason I'm in this truck now. It was to good of a deal to walk away from. I absolutely love the LML. I'm coming up on 180k miles now with no major problems.
@@KennyOfAllTrades that's actually barely broke in, a few years back dmax bought back two duramax trucks that both had one million miles on them. Both from the same company, they delivered camper trailers all over the country. I don't own a camper yet, but I will be picking up a 2500 this year and putting a palomino 8801 in it. Your videos are very inspiring. I can't wait to get out there and do some traveling myself. 🙂

Sounds like you have a well that provides water to your house since you mention orange stains. Do the hose bibs (outside faucets) at your house not go through your water filtration system? Some of mine do, some don't.
I do have a softer but it can't handle the amount of iron in the water. I use iron out to clean the tub and toilet on a monthly basis. Otherwise they start looking nasty. Yes ago I had a company give me a bid for a water system. It was 12k installed, and there's no way I can afford that. So I buy drinking water and never wash light colored clothes.
@@KennyOfAllTrades I will have to find the product named Iron Out that you mentioned. My water softener took a dump a while back and didn't filter out iron for a few months and turned things nasty orange.
It works absolutely amazing! I spent well over an hour scrubbing my tub with chemicals that were making me sick, and it still looked stained. Then I found Iron Out and Menards. All I do is pour the liquid on the orange stains, and it turns white and looks new instantly. No scrubbing is required. Same with the toilet. It comes in a brown bottle.

Hi Kenny, I’ve been tent camping for 40 plus years and I’m looking to upgrade to a truck camper. Do you any advice for someone looking for a truck camper?
These are my thoughts. I would start by looking for a camper that your truck can comfortably handle. I've had many truck campers over the years. I've done my far share of white knuckle driving because the camper was too heavy for the truck. It's not a fun experience.
Next, don't be afraid of older campers as long as it's not rotten. Some people take real good care of their campers. My Arctic Fox is 20 years old, and I'm inspecting it constantly. Keep in mind that all campers leak. It's not a huge issue as long as it was dealt with quickly. If the seller says the camper has never seen water damage, just know there is no such thing as a used truck camper in mint condition. Spend time inspecting the overhead cab, the tie-down points, under windows, and the top and bottom of the exterior walls. If you see some water stains, it's not the end of the world, as long as it has been properly sealed. If you can stick your finger through the paneling, you should pass on that one.
Some of my favorite memories are from my small, clapped out, used and abused Mountain Star. It wasn't the memory of the camper itself. The memory is waking in the camper, looking out the window to see some of the most beautiful Vista overlooks in America.
