I thought it would be a fun idea to look back at Arnold Schwarzenegger's training and nutrition to see if it still holds up today. Interestingly enough some things definitely do.
From a training standpoint, no one pushed themselves in the gym harder than Arnold. He constantly teetered on the edge of over training but you really can't argue how well it worked. I think we can learn a lot from that, even if it's just something we use to bring up lagging body parts.
In terms of nutrition, we've advanced quite a bit. I haven't had bacon on my diet since I was 7 so it was a nice change but hard to justify with what we know today.

1:45 Ryan dragging the barbell behind his scooter got a genuine belly laugh from me. Bodybuilding sketch comedy is a genre I didn’t know I needed.
This was peak comedy!
Strongman comedy is great too. Brian Shaw and Eddie hall going at eachother kills me
everybody clicked for the same reason
That’s exactly why I’ve clicked on hahaha
50 push ups 🫡
If that's his old lady, he's definitely a happy man.
I clicked for the comedy. What did yall click for?
King of thumbnails lol
As usual Ryan never fails to come with high quality content and a good banter! So! Don't sit for nothing! Get after it! And GET GROWING!
The main reason I like your channel is because it always challenges me to work out harder, and this one is probably one of the best versions of that
I am in my 60’s and for the last 30 years my goal has not been to look like Arnold, but rather to have his training philosophy. I look at how he used to do every exercise with enthusiasm, instead of dreading. He recently said in an interview how he never understood how lifters would just stand their going through the motions. That is why a lot of people use such heavy weight they are no longer able to keep strict form, but they can lie to themselves and use it as an excuse as to why their form is so bad. The same with lifting when your mind is not in it. Sometimes your body is telling your mind it needs a break, instead of just dropping the weight that day and doing more reps. Other lifters (including myself) have done this, and a 1/4 of the way into the workout gotten re energized and ended up having a serious heavy day.
I'm 63 5'10 190 and do very high reps but do occasionally add some heavy . But I'm content with my build and there's no need to try and get bigger. I'd rather be careful to be able to lift until I positively can't any longer and then I'll be done at that point with it all. Just like a wild animal.
Ryan thank you for bringing in your amazing sense of humor towards serious topics of work outs etc etc. you definitely hold my attention and it just makes me want to learn more. I Appreciate everything you do.
Ryan is the best fitness content creator, imo. His advice and scientific approach has gotten me out of so many plateaus I feel like I owe him money.
Love this channel!!! Really informative and blooming hilarious 😂
Ive been doing you PPL program for 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it!
Awesome video Ryan. Amazing effort you put into that. Well done.
You learn so much and laugh at the same time. Love it!
As a younger man in the 90s, I trained the Arnold way (I watched the movie, I read the book). I worked out the entire upper body 3 times a week and legs once a week (it has always taken my legs a week to recover from one heavy workout). I put on 65 natural pounds at a very lean body mass in 3 years but overtraining gave me a life time of pains as well (shoulders, elbows, back especially) that I still contend with. I think if you are pushing for quicker gains at the risk of injury, then go for it. But, I'd say that lifting is best as a long game.
It sounds like you trained the joints not the muscle.

Sir you are Absolutely Right 👍 I've had 8 orthopedic surgeries
20 Years of Fame and Now I'm literally living with pain
But I don't think 🤔 I'd change lt
I agree that I wouldn't change anything (no regerts). It's hard (as a young man) to moderate training in the face of significant size and strength gains. Now I look forward to lots of cardio!
I've trained a long time, first time I walked in the gym was in the late 70's and had aches and pains like you. But just by chance when dieting, I cut out dairy and within a week, I realised just about all my aches and pains had disappeared. Turns out I'm intolerant to dairy. Easily fixed. I drink lactose free milk or almond/oak stuff. I'm not 100% dairy free. I'll have a meal with cheese in and there's no way I'm giving up chocolate! But I've cut enough of it out to stop the pains.
Awesome video!
Would love to see a video on gripstrength, as for me, it sometimes messes with the sets at the end of workouts. Almost lost a toe to it, too.😂
I trained Mike Metzer style the last 4 months. Amazing results. At 60 Im impressed with his method.
Is there a link to his training routine?

Always wondered about trying Arnold’s routine-glad you did so now I know better!! Thx
Trained as Ryan for a couple months, best progress I've made in years of training.
The thing about that training schedule of Arnies is he only trained like that in the few months during his prep. He didn't train it year round, 3/4 of the year he trained 4 days a week once a day. For roughly 3 months during prep he would do that disgustingly overkill yet badass workout routine.
I swear to you after I completed your backed by science program ( which was amazing by the way ) I thought to myself I want to try Arnold’s workout program again . Besides your programs , Arnold’s program gave me some serious gains . Looking forward to the next 30 days
I can honesty say out of all the content with training videos I've watched over the years Ryans at the top of my list now. A huge reason is his dry humor for sure.
I love that you get tips, and them dog cameos. Keep them coming.
I use to train everything at least twice a week, and legs 3-4 times per week… depending where I was at in my program. Your body gets use to it, and I was seeing results, especially in strength.
I did every body part 3 -4x week. 21 days straight,3.5 -4 hrs a day for y
15mo. straight. After 2 weeks, your not sore or even get tired, but i switched to 3day split, shoulders/legs/core, back/bi, chest/tri and actually rest the 4th day.. seeing way more muscle mass gains, but overall strength n mobility dropped
@@aginkekrasini7856 Yeah theres no way you actually had 4 hours training at the gym. 3 of those hours are probably sitting on your ass.
This is a big coincidence, I used the build by science program exercises of ryan humiston and implemented them in arnolds routine, but using twice a week same body part. Fastest gains I have seen, took a body scan and biggest muscle mass I have had. It does take more energy and sometimes to give a good amount of effort I had to divide shoulder and arm workout into two different workouts. Another great video Ryan thanks
Honestly Ryan, love your programs but what i truly enjoy more is the pure comedy in each one. I get a hell of a workout and laugh my a$$ off while doing it......literally.
Ryan - your latest training programme broke my butt. I literally have both cheeks with a deep raw numb pain. I can't walk
Idk about his routine, but I watched all of his videos and hit the gym with the same intensity. I did swole up and my gains were impressive. I didn't end up having that Arnold Style physique, but I did have an impressive physique considering my natural diet and my budget. I was getting praises in the gym and even professional bodybuilders in the gym greeted me. Hardwork really pays.
Arnold really motivated me for that brief moment of glory.
But I went to the gym as an obese mofo, and professional bodybuilders greeted me too. I guess it has nothing to do with your body, they were just being friendly.
@@RickJoystick Nope! That gym wasn't commercial. It was a local gym where plates and old equipments were used. No extravagant machines. A place where the guys were serious about their routine. I know what I'm talking
2:50 Ryan! Your hexagon LED ceiling lights are FIRE! I need to make some myself!
Man I love your videos, hilarious and informative
When I began training back in the 70's, the only protein powder that I could find was Bob Hoffman's protein powder. There were two formulas, 70% and 90%. Both tasted like paper mache, it clumped, and you basically had to chew it as you drank it. Weider had his protein powders also, but you had to order them as my local store didn't carry them.
Yuck
Wasn't he also working as a labourer while he was doing this routine too? That means he was pretty much working out all day. Arnie is a legend
Yeah, it's why his legs were small.
The workout was pre contest. Not year round
In reality he only did that routine 2-3 months of the year during prep. The other 9 months in the off season he trained more traditionally 4-5 days a week.
@@WW-xo9ny You beat me too it.
Screw your freedom - Arnold
Man, your sense of humor makes me bark laugh out loud every vid. Just a big Thank you Ryan.
Many years ago around 2014 I did the Arnold for mass workout. 3+ hour workouts 6-7days a week. Was brutal! Did I gain mass some but wasn’t eating near enough to do so. Strength was insane after the 90days!
I started training like Arnold but my housekeeper slapped me 😂
" Except the salad, the salad can p***** off." 😂😂
Love the content man. Keep up the good work.
When I was about 20, I did Arnolds workout from Education Of A Bodybuilder. Worked great!
Who's the thumbnail girl? Haha
I still remember the feeling i had when i first checked out his encyclopaedia,it was like "wtf" on each page😂.
I mean how the fuck can someone train like that? It's suicide 😅
But one thing really got me motivated,he mentioned that he did flat, inc bench press, dips and flies for five years continuously. From that day I'm grinding myself in the gym each fucking day.
Ryan. Love your stuff! U need to release more content. Comedy and fitness is gold! U and Dr Mike need to team up!
Hi Ryan
Is the backed by science program doable at home?
Or do I need specific machines o gym stuff?
Thanks man
We need to see more of this girl in a bikini, keeps me motivated
I'm sure the roids helped Arnys recovery
Bingo
I love how you hold the mic! Lol. It’s awesome.
Hey Ryan how are we supposed tomtrain your workouts? I've finished my first 4 week set of backed by science program.
Do we just keep repeating this each month?
0:21 why you came
I'm currently eating Carnivore (Ruminant Meats, Dairy, Eggs, water).....I purposely get 60% of my calories from FAT, and am LOSING weight. FAT, in and of itself, is NOT the issue. The absence of fat (especially animal fat) in your diet, causes your body to turn carbs (not just flours and grains, but also fruits and vegetables) into Fat because it sees itself as STARVING for Fat.
Doin the lord’s work. Thanks for another awesome and informative vid
Awesome information as always!
Just never forget that he said 'Screw your freedoms'.
Haha
I'm glad I'm not the only one who mentioned this....

Awesome content as always
Which one of your programs would you recommend for someone who is looking to get results
I love this dude. He reminds me of my buddies in the marines.
Could be one of my favorite videos on this channel
It would be interesting to follow Tony Sansone’s diet and workout from the 1920s. I think he was the first bodybuilder who published items like these. I have both originals, Tony Sansone’s Weight Gain Diet along with his Progressive Home Physical workout. However, I feel a lot of his success was related to good genes and non-processed food at the time.
Funny and educational, man I love these videos!
That book and movie are the very foundation of my training journey.
I used to workout as the gym option in a Friday at high school. Then I had a gym membership. One weekend my brother invited me on this snowboard trip and we stayed at Steve’s house the night before. We got super stoned and they had the encyclopedia sitting right there. Flipping through the pages of that thing changed my life.
Loving this channel
I have done this program in the past and had fantastic gains, did not eat quite like that but i can attest that it was both brutal and enjoyable. and yes i was sore too.

I'd like to see a breakdown of which exercises we should do if we chose to follow that split you recommended that would hit each body part twice a week
I've been watching you since your first video on CZcams... You look like a monster compared to then, well done
I was wondering what you used the mobility scooter for big guy, makes a lot of sense when I saw you dragging the barbell!
You’ve gotten thick! I watched this video and another from 3 months ago. That Arnold w/o must have worked because your arms are significantly larger. 💪🏼
Hey Ryan what brand of spray tan you using?
Loving this content! I have a huge problem with my triceps lighting up when I train chest would love to know if there is certain exercises or changes in position I can make to take them out of it!
With a push up, put your hands more towards your belly button and every time when your chest hits the ground, see if your shoulders are retracted all the way, and not shrugged. Same goes for bench press and any push movement. This will engage your chest more, coupled with better mind muscle connection. I use to train this by pushing walls when I had to wait for the bus or something, and feel my chest with my other hand. You’ll learn to push with your chest. I found it to be the hardest muscle to activate by far. Took me years
Pre-exhaust the chest muscles with an isolation exercise and go straight to a pressing movement(superset). You'll have to use lighter weight on the pressing movement, but the muscle connection is phenomenal if done correctly. If your shoulders bother you with isolation exercises, like me, I'll sometimes do a pre-exhaust with a set of push-ups, concentrating on using the pecs to push up, then straight to a pressing movement. If done correctly, this makes your pecs pop out like you've never seen before.
Ryan, I am 56. Any suggestion for training over 55. Reps, Sets and which exercises.
Hay bro. What can i do to focus on my front arm pit area definition. I only have dumbells and an adjustable chair.
Your videos are always so well done. You deserve a larger audience. And who was that woman? LOL
Following Mike Mentzer's routine and this is killer in terms of strength gains
Who hasnt wondered. Great vid.
The great and powerful Algorithm led me to your channel, and you've made a Subscriber out of me....
I was brought here for the knowledge therein
I stayed for the humor....and the science based knowledge
Any chance you'd try Serge Nubret's program and diet? You could always swap out the horse meat for lean beef.
Any idea on how to fix lower back pumps from pre workout?
Where was the suggested Sunday schedule?
Do the pullovers on a decline, steeper the better but whatever you feel comfortable with, should shift a bit more of the exercise onto the chest at the end.
I would have liked to have heard your before and after experience more.
I remember buying his encyclopedia many years ago... binned it and then got hold of a copy just recently. Back in his day they didn't have access to such high quality supplements but then we all shouldn't rely on them anyway.
Love your no-nonsense approach to training, etc.
And by they way, that lady really brings the missing sparkle to your vlogs! ha... who is she, and what's her OF's? 😉
Can you go over your current or past PR's, mine are shot because of my crappy twig of a spine that I was "gifted " with
Twice a week sounds good, are you going to put a program together like that? Chest and back same day stuff like that.
Informative, funny, and threw in some nice eye candy for good measure. Now this is 12/10 content.
Eye candy? The dog?
The woman was just fat, the only candy there is the candy she ate.
@@OriginalPuro lol ok dude
I just joined a gym that has no free weights (Planet Fitness) just what you would call cable style weight systems with all the crazy shaped bars and weight plate selection by moving the pin. I'm wanting to know these types of machines are still good for getting big or do free weights do a better job at targeting certain muscles better?
Thanks!
