quadrogong@gmail.com How to stretch a felt or straw hat, western or fedora, derby or Porkpie hat it’s all the same..
Do it at your own risk,
    it takes practice to stretch
and u may mess a couple up in the process. Really.
People mail their stretches to me from across the sea, from Europe and Asia..
I’m doing this over 25 years and have gotten a feel for it,
How far to go,when to stop...
U can ALWAYS stretch a hat, as far as u want to go..
    But..
    the more u stretch,
the more side effect and distorted it can get,
but u can always do it.
    The less u do,
the less stretch marks u will see,
    or hopefully, none at all..
u will usually need to smooth out the marks
from stretching afterwards, for big stretches u basically destroy the shape, and start again..it’s brutal. I don’t suggest this unless there’s no other option,
    For your old hat only..!!!
    this is NOT suggested
    when buying a new hat...
it’s almost always best to buy larger,
and pad it down to size afterwards.
Stretching contracts. not all the way,
but it shrinks back. A lot.
you always wind up thinking u have tons of room..
“Wow! That was a HUGE stretch,
it’s gonna be BIG on you!”
an hour later, it feels the same as it did
    ..kind of a bit looser?
Maybe? Maybe not? I think so, I can’t tell.
    it comes back afterwards,
    If you stretch 175% larger..
In the end, after it shrinks back, when u wake up the next day, it’ll settle and eventually all you’ve gotten from that 175% stretch
is about a 10-20% larger hat in the end.
Hat stretching works, but barely,u need to work your ass off,
for the tiniest bit of difference.
People always ask, “wait!..don’t u need to measure me? To know HOW MUCH to stretch?” Thinking I’m being lazy..
But without looking, I know I always need to stretch it to the MAXIMUM, as far as I can go without the side effects and stretch marks showing.
and in the end, it’ll be a little bigger, if I stretch the absolute crapola out of it.
It’s the only way to get results that last,
Anything else is fake, just for show, worthless.
Like most of the people who stretch hats, it does absolutely nothing. Not a thing.
If u own a hat jack, u know.. it works for a second, after u take it out, the hat is small again, u need to steam and stretch it so far that it’s cringeworthy, it looks like you’re destroying the hat, sometimes it’s so brutal looking folks can not even watch! And I agree.
If it feels ok after the guy takes it off the stretcher, you’re screwed.
The next day that stretch is gone.
It needs to feel TOO BIG when it comes off of the stretch
I tell folks, TRUDT ME, it’ll come back. TRIET ME.
Not one person came back with a complaint in 25 years
it fits perfect the second it comes off the stretcher, even a bit big, so they’re satisfied,
But little do they know that ten minutes later, that kind of stretch is worthless.
I’m being generous too, I’d say 10% is more typical for me,
and for you guys, new at this..you’ll get 5%-7%
because you’ll be cautious, and stop stretching earlier than me,
afraid to tear the hat...and rightly so,
    But again, the payoff sucks,
If u have an old hat that doesn’t fit,
And u have no other choice, u can go for it,
It’s free. I don’t charge, and that’s for the last 25 years, I must have stretched over 500 hats, maybe 1000.
and we never charged a penny.
It takes a ton of work, skillfully, carefully done work..
and the payoff is tiny, u wind up with a hat that’s got so many side efffects, stretch marks, tears in the sweatband, this and that..
    And only about 10% larger
they will steam out if u rub them away, if u do jut a little, there will be no mark at all
    More hat shaping tips.

This cat is one of my favorite peeps of 2022. I first saw I video where in the first 2 minutes he was flipping and toying a green fedora nonstop. I didn't know what to make of him then after 4minues I knew this guy is a seriously talented gentleman with any hat and has a gift.

Get a mini basketball and let out some of the air, then put it in the hat and with a ball pump put in air just to snug it up, then steam the hat pump the ball a little more and repeat until you get the desired size,. Cheap and easy

How do I dull down the sharp angle of the top divots in a Stetson hat? My father gave me an orvis hat that has a cowboy hat look but I want more of a fly fishing hat look. I also want to flatten out the brim so it doesn't curve up but rather straight out. Do I just steam and form it until I'm happy with it? Any tips and pointers to make that easier?

I have a rabbit felt cowboy hat that i left in my truck over a weekend and in 110° heat it seemed to have shrunk totally. Is there anyway to get the entire hat back to its original form. The hat is of great quality and only 2 years old.

Damn. Remember when we could make an honest days living doing what we loved. If this is our "New Normal" then I reject it.
Kev, I wear a 7-1/8 cowboy hat, and I'd like to stretch it to a 7-1/4 to see how it feels. Can I purchase a hat stretcher and just leave it under moderate tension for a few days without steaming?

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety +3

Nah, it won’t work.hat jacks leave huge stretch marks too.. don’t do it. You will get no results ..if steam it really hard, and u stretch the living crap out of it, to the point where it’s ready to bust, like to the breaking point? and leave it like that for 24 hours..? It’ll feel good for 20-30 minutes.,then go back to exactly the same size, with a shit ton of stretch marks.. you’ll dog your hat, NO. Big No. if u want that hat a little looser,u need to snip the Reed that’s inside of the sweatband,
(the Ring of nylon fishing line that’s inside the little tiny, tube at the edge of the leather sweatband) snip it, so u loosen the tension, then take the hat and stretch it over your knee, pull it across chest with both hands, stretch it lengthwise..over and over, increasing pressure carefully, slowly, smoothly, no jerking motions,,
Hand stretch it yourself, do this over and over,, back to front, don’t worry about the sides. Once u break the Reed tension, u can stretch it, but no hat jacks, that only stretches a 1-2” section, and the crown winds up like a staircase shape..you would need the full sized, steel hat stretcher..like the kind I use on the steamer table at JJs, for me,when a hat is super tight,no take out the sweatband, if it’s a little bit tight, I break the Reed and stretch it with the big, steel stretcher . But avoid buying the wooden hat Jack type hat stretchers, they do NOTHING. It contracts afterwards..
to make any noticeable difference. you would need to over stretch it so, so much..that afterwards, the Cowan and brim will be so misshapen, the hat is all but destroyed..then u have to put it back together..open the crown and reshape it from scratch, same w the brim..
Whenever u stretch enough to make a difference..the hat gets so distorted and out of shape, it’ll take a boatload of experience to bring it back to a decent shape.

Thanks for the info Kevin ! Oh yeah , I have several hats that have shrunk , lost their oval . Need a good stretch and shaping , may need professional help for a couple . Also , in my hast , I noticed a hat new at a super price , ordered it , after a few minutes , I thought , "hmm , I didn't check to see was that a long oval , or round oval ... I hope it's long ." Nope ! Round oval ! YIKES ! Ordered a Hat Jack immediately . Called the store the next day , hat was already shipped , I knew , owner said , check it (The Hat) when it comes in , if I need a long oval , call back , we'll see . I told him I'd ordered a Hat Jack , other hats need it , wondered if this was my only option ? Or do I need to return it , or take it to a pro Hatter ? ... My old old hat size was 7 1/4 , like I didn't even have a hat on , but my last (and this new stetson on the way) are 7 3/8 (checked my head size , 23") , but the last always pinched in the front and back , rocky on the sides . Now after rain and no wearing because it wasn't comfortable , it's totally gone tighter even more , plus dirty . Have one , if it's not gone "POOF" that needs a new sweat band , plus blocking and shaping and stretching I'm sure , and sure I'll have to go to the pro with it . If you read this , you might offer suggestions , plus I have a Panama that I loved that has totally flopped , too much sweat and rain , is there hope ? Thanks for the vids , and helpful info !

+Michael Ray hats shrink because your home is too hot in winter, i can stretch them, free,if u send them..hat jacks will only hold a stretch with steam, watch my video on stretching before using one..really the only time u need long ovals is for harder hats like westerns, soft felts will stretch and flex w your head, and barely nobody makes ovals, except western brands. i can fix all your hats if u send them or come to NY,but how great will they look? hard to say. got to see them. talk tuesday?

Mine are all western hats , but I've been to NYC several times , too many (haha !) passing through , or coming and going , YIKES ! I'd pay to leave , hated paying to go into the City ! If it was possible I'd get there early , and drop in New Jersey , get out while the getting is good . You have a nice shop , I love the pizza and delis in NYC ! Every ? Thanx for the new upload. Very interesting and informative, as always. Did the Stetson Shelby Model arrive in the shop by now ?.....
ah,...one more question came to my mind... do LiteFelt hats tend to shrink or widen with the time ? ... by the way,... cool t-Shirt...; )

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 4 lety +1

We didn't order the Shelby, they make literally hundreds of styles every year, we can't carry them all, we try to stock multiple brands from across the globe, Stetson is one of our biggest lines, but there's too many redundant models, Shelby's not really a hot seller, there are too many classic models that look similar, we carry a lot of Crushable wool Outbacks like it..
Lite felt is pretty stabil, but as it gets older, like really, really old... It'll both shrink AND stretch. You'll lose the total amount of felt, but the size will stretch as it gets tighter, after a long, long time, it'll look floppy, and not as nice, but if u keep wearing it,it'll fit for decades, but the shape will be off.
(assuming u continue to wear it, and it isn't neglected for many years, unworn hats might just Shrink)

Hi Kevin,Greetings from Paris, Fr. Thank you for your excellent videos, it's always a pleasure to learn from a master! This stretching video is just what I need... I have a beautiful Borsalino Homburg circa 1950 but in prime condition, it has the usual magnificent gross grain trim to the edge of the brim. My problen is that the hat is tight, tight... And I hope to stretch it out from 59.70 cm to 61cm but really want to protect the leather and trim. Do you think that it's reasonable to stretch from 59.70 to 61 (plus the necessary overstretch of course)? And do you think that feeding the leather with a good nutral cream first would be a good idea? I was thinking of removing the bow and opening the back stitching too before stretching, is this a good idea do you think?
Thank you again for such useful videos, they are great to watch.

It’s difficult. U need to cut the Reed on the sweatband before u can get any stretch. It isn’t easy. I can do it for u, or u can watch my videos on “/cutting the Reed stretch a hat” and then if u buy a hat jack and u have a source of steam, maybe u can do it, but.. I’m happy to do it for u, call the shop, 8006221911 they’ll tell u how to mail it in, put a note in the box explaining what u want, and your phone number, so I can call u for the shipping fee, to ship it back, the stretch is free. Make sure u ask for ATTN KEVIN or else it’ll go to the hat maker and they’ll charge u for a stretch, send it to me, with a note explaining what u need, and your phone number

Each case it different, u can stretch a LOT. BUT..the more u stretch, the more unwanted
      side effects will happen.
Stretch marks can look obvious and bad if it's done improperly, u can keep going, but the more extreme the stretch, the worse it looks.
Plus, the outer hat band will pop off, if u break those stitches, or u will tear the sweatband if it's dry or old(vintage hats etc)
      there are limitations,
I usually stretch as far as I can go without tearing it, breaking the sweatband, or making it look totally crappy..
u need to stop before u do permanent damage, and that basically takes experience. (Which is why most people stretch hats so little, that it barely helps at all)
they're afraid to wreck the hat..!
it's way harder than it looks.
If u do a decent stretch, u basically have to reshape the entire hat again..

Not really. No. That’s way too much, only way it’d even come close is by removing the entire leather sweatband from the hat. It’d leave raw felt against your forehead, but it would be the ONLY way to open a hat that much without destroying the shape of it.I’ve done that to two hats, my brown Stetson temple and one of my green borsalinos both have the leather sweatband cut out, they’re still fine, had em for years that way

I don’t suggest buying tight, I don’t suggest stretching, pretty much ever.. it barely works at all,
and u wind up with a hat that looks all crunched up and old, used.. it’s not easy to stretch a hat, even with the right equipment and experience. U can try removing the Reed from the leather sweatband, and then stretching the hat over your knee and across your chest, over and over.. for a few days.
      WaTch this first .. czcams.com/video/0p3MZzWAxMo/video.html
      and this czcams.com/video/LzAN1D2dF2Q/video.html
I have to say, it’s not easy, and it takes time.. just don’t ever buy a hat too small, buy it too large if in doubt, it’s a snap to pad down a large hat, but stretching is near impossible, it’s not easy..

I’m not working now, I’ll be back in the summer when I get vaccinated. Then I can do it. The hat band is done by the hatmaker though, not me. I have to say, that’s not an easy thing to do. If it’s truly a whole size off, it won’t stretch easily, nor will it stretch without some kind of side effects. They will Reband it for you, at JJs, and I can stretch it after I’m back from hiatus, June or July..hopefully, depending on how fast the vaccine reaches us regular folks.

How can I stretch my rabbit fur hat with textile (not leather) inside lining? Thank you

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 2 lety +1

I wouldn’t stretch it much, those skins tend to be pretty dry and thin, they tear easily, and steaming them dehydrates them, there’s not a lot u can do..
      Wish I could help more..

Did this to my royal flush gambler which is the same size as my open roads but for some reason is too tight and hurts my head. The stretch was successful but I don't know if its because the hat is sort of an almost perfect circle there are significant stretch marks showing. It's not so bad that I can't wear it. It's mostly in the back and not really noticeable until you really look at it, but I'm OCD and it sort of bothers me. I tried to get the marks out but can't really.... Guess I have to live with it....

Without a powerful steamer it’ll be tough to do much about it,stretching can do that.. it’s a brutal process. Has it held its stretch?

@@quadrogong1111 Yeah. The stretch has held pretty good. Hat fits perfectly now. I was able to get most of the marks out. Actually looks really good. Nothing in the front and just a tiny mark in the back, so I'm pretty happy with it, thanks!

What would be needed to fix a leather hat that has sat in water and shrunken and deformed? It is seriously shrunken, doesn't really fit on my head anymore. Brim is all messed up too. Would this be something that i could send in for a repair? This hat is quite sentimental to me, so I'm willing to pay a bit to fix it up.

      A. Zak have you tried leather/saddle oil or cream on it ? I use the oil to revive old leather from boots and jackets and as long as there are no cracks or tears in the leather it. Makes the leather potable and formable again. Hope it helps

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 5 lety +1

Spanda Makt sorry, just saw this..the only difference in sizes are the width, they all extend to a triple extra large size, but the medium is narrow, the large is wider and the XL is wide..wide. So it depends if u Anna stretch it just lengthwise..or not.
...basicallyif u wear a tiny size, the L and Xl won’t fit inside ..otherwise, it doesn’t matter THAT much. They’re all fine for most jobs, I usually grab any one.,not that much difference

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 5 lety

Carl Watters yes, but very possible, but the more u stretch , the more side affects, bring it to me, I can do it, and try to hide any stretch marks, or distortions in the brim it may cause, no charge..ever, if the leather sweatband is very dry, that might split with the extreme stretch, but I can patch it..

Hi Kevin. a friend of yours and a fellow New Yorker and guitar guy, Adam, mentioned you to me. So, I picked up a mint, old Pennies Marathon, I got it cheap. On inspection, the sweatband tore along a perforation from the threads along where it's sewn, in the back. Maybe why they priced it low? Sweet hat and color. it's a 7-1/8", tag still in it, but I'm a 7-3/8". I see below that you do resize hats, Does this sound like something you'd do? hope so, righteous hat.

Bring it to me at the shop, I’m there every day except for Monday and Tuesdays.. and my lunch break is usually around 1130-1pm, I can do it, we need to stretch it, but that’s very hard, bring it to ME ...Not the repair guy in the back room, they’ll charge you and it’ll take a couple of weeks, Bring it to me, I’ll do it free and while u wait, after we stretch it, the gap between that seam that’s open will open wider, there will be a little space that opens, after we stretch the sweatband, I usually patch up the sweatband gap that will open, just keep it away from heat, radiators etc and bring it to me, anytime wed-sun (1-7pm)
      no problem ✌️😉

captain0ldy0da yes, good, just hope it holds the stretch and doesn’t shrink back.. try it in an hour, then the next day.. u may have to over stretch it..go TOO BIG in order to get it to fit in the long run

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 5 lety

captain0ldy0da stretches don’t usually hold, they shrink back again.. try cutting the reed in the back seam if u have a receded, leather sweatband, snip the reed and remove the wire..repeat your stretching process again, but overdo it..stretch it a little too large, keep it away from heat, or even a warm room..as it dries..and when u store it, heat shrinks it back..

Thank you for this great advice! My hat does have a leather sweatband, but it is a sturdy bowler hat so I'm not sure it'll stretch much. The size of the hat is 55cm, which is my usual hat size, I think I just needed to change the opening to fit my head shape.

Right now I’m not at the shop, Im on hiatus until the pandemic improves. But when I do return to the hat shop, it wouldn’t cost anything, just $15.50 shipping,
Stretching doesn’t really work well, u should know, don’t expect a lot of results, u will get better results opening up the back seam to the sweatband, and cutting the stitches... U should also cut the Reed, like a piece of fishing line that runs through the leather sweatband. To relieve the tension, czcams.com/video/0p3MZzWAxMo/video.html
czcams.com/video/5iggqeLB_LM/video.html I’d suggest watching these two videos, stretching is not great, it distorts the felt so much, when just cutting the sweatband back seam, plus the Reed.will hold the shape of the hat and loosen the fit
