  • 1969 Plymouth Road Runner A12 vs 1971 Plymouth Duster 340. Factory Stock Drag Race. Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race.
First car is a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. The other is a 1971 Plymouth Duster. The Road Runner is an A12, and therefore has a 440 6-bbl V8, while the Duster has a 340 V8. The 440-6 engine was rated 390 horsepower and the Duster 340 was rated 275 horsepower. Backing the Road Runner A12 is a 4-speed manual transmission, but the '71 Duster has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. Rear gearing in the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner A12 is 4.10. The Duster has a more aggressive set of 4.30 rear gears. Weight is a strength for the Duster as it only weighs 3230 pounds, including the driver. On the other hand, the Road Runner (with driver) is 3784 pounds. Speed and Super Car Magazine tested a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner A12, and with Ronnie Sox at the wheel it ran 12.91 seconds @ 111 mph. Super Street Cars magazine tested a 1971 Duster 340 with 3.91 rear gears and an automatic transmission and it ran 14.26 seconds @ 98.3 mph.

My brother-in-law had a new 1969 Dart GT Sport 340 automatic. He beat everything on the street.
One day he raced a 429 Ranchero on the perimeter highway just outside Winnipeg. The Ranchero had wide tires and the Dart had narrow factory tires.
The Ranchero took the Dart off the line, but was less than a car for length ahead. All the way down the highway, the Ranchero did not pull away at all.
My brother-in-law said that if it wasn't for the wider tires on the Ranchero, he would have beaten it. That GT Sport was an exciting car! It was gold with white vinyl top and white interior. We listened to Creedence Clearwater Revival on his factory 8-track in the car.

Going on leave after a 8 month deployment on our Destroyer, my buddy gave e a ride back to Louisiana from Norfolk. He was also a Louisiana native. We left Norfolk and the speed limit back then was 55. We got stopped about 20 miles out of Norfolk by a full grown Virginia Bear and he issued a warning for 85 in a 55. He called ahead to clear us and we were never stopped again even though we averaged about 80 mph all the way home. You talk about a quick trip in his 1970 340 Duster. He had replaced the cam and the intake and carb set up with Holley equipment and other goodies. That 340 would just hum through those duals. It was a crazy, fun trip especially since we had some special help staying awake.

Who's doing the tuning on these cars to make them run those kind of times , especially without slicks or headers , all the years I've watch pure stock racing it was very seldom you see these cars run mid 12s especially a stock 340 with just a set of gears , tell me I'm wrong !

Scott, check out the description of this video page. It has the rules for allowed mods. Shift kit, ok. Electronic ign, ok. 1.5 point raise on comp ratio, ok. +.070" over bore, ok. On a hot day the surface of that drag strip can be like glue. I've seen people leave a shoe stuck on the surface, if it wasn't tied securely enough. It gets sprayed with "stickem".

@@mrkemblegilstrap, Martin 131 is an awesome track. I grew up 20 miles from there and it's always been world-class in it's maintenance and setup. Often times, my 383ci Regal would run mid 11s there but only mid 12s at Stanton... all because of how good the crews and track is at 131.

@@mrkemblegilstrap They only allow for a 1.5 point increase in compression but just the blueprinting and dyno tuning alone is worth quite a bit in actual, usable power. What gets me is the ability to launch with those skinny bias ply tires. If you put the mph/weight of the car through a calculator the 340 is only making 273 to the wheels and the Road Runner is only making 371. Truthfully, if you've seen dyno tests of these engines stock that would be about they produce in top tune and ideal conditions without any increase in compression. These racers are just getting 100% out of their engines where most people over the last 50 years, including me, were lucky to be getting 70% out of their muscle cars.

@@1967davethewave hi! Hey, thank you for the correction! I went back and edited my post. I sure went crazy on that one! Believe it or not, I usually make very few mistakes. Yeah, for giggles, I've run a bunch of these times/mph thru a HP/Torque calculator. Parasitic losses on Auto/Manual tranny are pretty interesting. I had a 3 grand stall in my Bee and I could feel the looseness in it. Personally, I think 4.30 and 4.56 rear ends are kinda useless. IDK why people are so afraid of numerically high gears. I see so many of these cars that run a mid 13 at 107. A 4.89, like my bee had would take a whole second off of their time. How many car lengths is that? I am very impressed with the times some of these big block cars turn in with the street tires. Great drivers and great track. A stock small block with a auto doesn't have the low end power to have any traction problems.

He said that I would kill myself with that car. Woulda kicked his ass but he was 6'6" 250 and I was a 140lb pipsqueek, so that wouldn't have worked. Oh well, 6cyl Duster it was 🤣😂🤣😂

Loved the cars, the youtuber/narrator needs to get over himself and the 3rd grade humor.
Would have been better if both cars had been original.
The A12 Roadrunner as far as you can tell in a video was completely stock.
The Duster however, while appearing stock did not come with 4.30 gears. Lowest available factory option i can find listed for that car/engine combo was
3.91. Doesnt seem like a big difference, but would have been enough to take away launch the duster got on the Roadrunner and would most likely have slowed him down enough to put him over the 13 second mark.

I like watching the competing classic muscle cars but can't stand the guy who is putting them on. His sick fart jokes all the time get old fast. Having said that, I lived those muscle car times and drag raced my 72 Dodge Demon 340 while my brother raced his 67 440 GTX. I can tell you that none of the cars in these videos are factory stock. NO muscle car of that era could come close to running 11 and 12 in the quarter mile, especially with skinny stock tires. All I can say is that the NHRA rules for what they consider (stock) tells me that they are anything but stock. Back in the day no car, even the Hemi cars, would not turn 12's bone stock. You needed slicks, headers, and great tuning to get there.
