  • 1970 Dodge Demon 340 vs 1970 Chevrolet Camaro SS396 L78. Pure Stock Drag Race (factory stock drag racing)
Our first car is a monster! A 1970 Dodge Demon 340 (the evil twin of the Plymouth Duster 340). The other car might look like a Z28, but it's actually a 1970 Chevy Camaro Super Sport 396 with a L78 with 375 horsepower! The Demon 340 was rather rare that year with only 10,000 made. However, the Camaro SS is even more rare with only 600 (!) L78s produced in 1970. For comparison, they made over 10 times more Z28s in 1970! If you're a fan of watching muscle cars drag race, well, this is a good match for you!
Remember, both cars participate in Factory Stock class through F.A.S.T drag racing. Make sure you visit their website. www.fastdrags.com
Here are the Factory Stock rules:

Ram low 11’s in 1/4 mile in Cicero NY (ESTA Safety Park) awesome track. My dad finally got out of it mid 80’s. And built a 65 Chevy II. Bought it from the wreckers for 500 bucks. Had a 327 motor in it. Was to be crushed that day. My dad saved its life. Took him a few years to build into a street machine show car. He trade tue 327 for a 283 plus money. Wasn’t set for racing but he did do a ray test. Ram 15’s in a 1/4 mile. Not bad for a little motor like that. After a few years. He sold it. Just the body was appraised at 10 G’s. We did a lot of red light to red light racing. With my 3:55 gears I didn't need to shift in that distance. I caught a lot of big blocks by surprise. The A body's for Mopar in the semi fast back shape were specially designed. Things to notice a hemi fits between the front sub frame. The power to weight ratio was designed purposely to get the 71 Demon and duster an advantage during launch the way the car was designed allowed for maximum weight distribution. The 340 was a wicked motor. High raving large intake ports with the specially redesigned intake manifold and exhaust ports. Large over lap on the cam give it a wide power band. Forged crank and forged rods with light weight pistons allowed for 6700- 6800 shift points on the 4 speeds and 6400-6500 shift points on the automatic. The last AVS carb used on 340's was especially tuned for max air and fuel up to 6800rpm. While allowing 21 mpg with the 3.54 gears.

Those little 340 Demons, Darts, Cuda's and Dusters would flat a$$ run. I wasn't into Mopars in the 70's so I passed on a mint '70 bone stock Dart 340 for $600 around 1980. Three speed on the floor, a friend bought it and it ran 14.23 on stock sized tires.
I can still see it for sale that summer in front of a gas station.

Demon before the Demon (Challenger). It's 340 sure held up against the Camaro. Another close race.

I had a 72 SS 396/402 4 speed gold with a white vinyl top in 1974 at age nineteen... Too much car for me at that time ( no trouble) getting kicked out of more than one town .. or just politely asked to leave. Now I know The 72 was powered down with the first roll-out of the pollution controls, but I did
manage to get a few tanks of Sonoco 260 before the pumps were ripped out. Maybe you could mention the enormous three-barreled carb sitting atop the 402...
It was an awesome car of power and beauty... My dad shut me down and sold the car even though I was the one paying for it...

those 340s definitely have a very signature sound when they start to rev. Nothing else sounds like them!

Those little A body Mopars are real contenders. A reletively lightweight compact stuffed with strong small block is just a good combo. I do love my GM F bodies though.

    I had a 70 Duster 340 that I bought from the original owner in 1978 for $1250.
He was a salesman and kept a record of every gallon of gas and quart of oil.
Had 65000 miles when I got it. 3 speed on the floor.
Mopar orange with black top and interior.
It was the best car I ever had and I've been kicking myself for years for not keeping it.

How awful it will be to use the Chevy commercials today 45 years from now when you are making videos on the Mustang and Camaro. “Did you know Camaro has won 19 JD power awards...”😑🔫

Martin 131 dragway was my home track. Back in the 1970’s they had a pure stock class. I had a friend who raced a purple 1970 duster 340 he did very well in the class. The car that seemed to win the most in the class was a blue Cougar 428. I always wondered how pure stock it was because it dominated the class when he was there.
