  • The Greek island of Paros, in the Cyclades, is a popular tourist destination during the summer season, when around 450,000 visitors flock to the picturesque island of 12,000 inhabitants. But locals have become exacerbated by this huge influx of tourists and the illegal privatisation of certain beaches. Protests have even erupted on Paros under the banner of "Reclaim the beach". Meanwhile, measures are already being taken in the Greek capital Athens amid increasing awareness of overtourism. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's Guillaume Gougeon.

I agree with the locals. The Greeks have the right to maintain a good environment.

But which locals? The more than likely civil servants with a secured job or the owners and waiters in the hospitality sector?

I see your point but if a town, no matter how beautiful, wants to limit tourism they have a right to do so. So many tourist spots are now ruined by tourism. It's a shame.

Wow they turned that beach into a mass of umbrellas and couches. On a beach with moisture and bugs ect thats actually disgusting. Those will age and rot. Just give it about 6-8 years and see what they look like then. They should make that illegal there.

1:08 "The others are more illegal than me". No comment.
1:33 It is not protests against tourism but against beach bars, hotels, taverns etc who occupie beaches illegally. So if you don't pay you can't swim. The price for a four member family could be from 50 to 100 euros which is scandal.

Tourists will destroy your environments by increased air traffic pollution. That’s why Greece had wildfire problems this summer. ☀️ 🇬🇷

Worst than Over Turism is Over Disrespect for the donts and laws of visited coutrys to control turists, but the reality is turists take advantage of beig treated like kings and queens due to their financial contribution from hospitality to organised crime living on scams and robbery. That is the reality. All countries deserve turism but should have a balance and organisation that starts in each country by prioritising looking after their people first.

Time to make things more expensive, so that the right type of visitors make it. And time to remove public free WiFi and to quadruple the roaming data fees. That should help and clear things up.

If governments were keen to stop budget airlines charging so litle, they would do it right now, but they don't for financial reasons more than ever post-pandemic in order to balance covid losses. Instead governments invite and promote their nations conscient of the drawbacks resulting from that.
Is quite a grey area taking though actions when turism means a very considerable source of income.

Greece is not the only country which you can visit in the Middle East there are others much more affordable and their beaches compete head on with the Greek beaches. I went and saw the Parthenon and left the next day. My friends had adviced me to not stay third world conditions in Athens . Flew to Izmir and all was great

I doubt they resent the paying visitors as much as they resent the visitors that expect lifetime support.

Send the Parthenon over to London to be reunited with the Elgin Marbles.
That should help to attract less visitors.

What do you want Greece, you are the ones who use every inch for Airbnb. There’s nowhere to rent for residents. How many of you live in garages with your kids to Airbnb your home. I’ve just left after 45 years because of greed, money grabbing ruthless behaviour not being able to turn without being ripped off. What do you want?
