Kreg Straight Edge Guide & SEG XL Detailed Setup & Unboxing: BYO Circular Saw, Jigsaw & Router Guide

- One of the very first things I made for the workshop was a poor man's plywood circular saw guide, and it served me well for nearly 2 years. This Kreg Straight Edge Guide stands alongside the Kreg Accu-Cut as a natural progression for those looking to step up. One of its key advantages is not only can you use it with your circular saw, but it'll also help guide the router or even a jigsaw.
In this video, I will unbox, go through the setup and how to assemble and calibrate the Straight Edge Guide in detail for those who don't want to read the instructions. It is not a review per se, but I'll give my first impressions of it too.
Mine is the normal version 1.2m or 4-foot model, meaning it can cross-cut a full sheet of plywood, MDF, melamine or other similar sheet goods. The XL version is twice as long as the regular one and can rip-cut the full 2.4m or 8 feet.
In the future, I'll review it properly and compare it to the Kreg Rip-Cut and the Kreg Accu-Cut so you can see the differences between them.

GREAT video. This shows that "GOOD" videos/tutorials never get old. Very well done and precice! !! !!!
Thank you again! You've just reminded me I should perhaps update the thumbnail to remove the 'new' part. It's been serving me well quite a while now 😊
Thank you for putting this video on CZcams. Just received this item from kreg and I used this for setting it up. You made it very easy. I find this item to be a very good value at $40 US. Thanks again and have a great New Years!
Cheers Dan, and happy New Years. Kreg gear can be a bit pricey at times, but this has to be one of their best value tools. Enjoy!
Thank you, Aussie man-god. Just got mine and watched your excellent presentation while setting up.
Thank you Helen! Glad to see the video used for its intended purpose and being helpful 😊
I was wondering how these worked James & your demonstration explained it clearly, well done mate 🍻👍👍👍
Cheers mate! Saw your little cameo on the Carbs tonight too 👌
A1 detailed presentation. Thank you. I still wasn’t 100% sure about how I did after reading the instruction manual. I could better fine-tuned my adjustments with your helpful video. Many thanks.
Glad it was useful! The instructions are pretty good compared to others I've seen, but I find a visual guide often helps a lot 😊
very detailed and explanation on the Kreg straight edge guide and a useful tool in the shop! great job🍻👏
Thanks mate. One for the CZcams search algorithm ;)
Great review and instructions James ! Videos like these are great for visual people like myself, Cheers Mate !
The version of this I did for the Accu-cut has been very popular, so expect to see a few of this style of video from time to time ;)
Great video James 😀 I just purchased the Kreg rip cut guide can’t wait to give it a whirl 👏
Thanks Annie! Without a table saw my rip cut is an essential piece of kit for precision ripping. As the setup on this one is faster with no sled to worry about I may use it for rough break downs.
Great to see the tool in detail James!! Great job!! Well presented 😀
Thanks Ains, now to start thinking of the sanding station...and things to fill it with 🤔😉
@@FixitFingers 😉😉👍🏼😀
Hello James,
a very nice router guide. Best wishes. Thank you for the introduction, setup and information. It's a good choice. It will be very useful. Thank you for sharing. Stay healthy and happy. See you. Big greetings. Yours sincerely, Mehmet
Cheers mate. One for the CZcams search engine ;) It will hopefully help many people who want this new tool.
@@FixitFingers thanks dude. Cheers.
Very helpful and well explained. Thank you
You're welcome! Glad it helped. 😀
Really nice clear guide. Looking for something to improve workflow of breaking down sheet goods and routing dadoes and this looks perfect
Cheers Paul, also being much cheaper than the Accu-cut the increased versatility of this comes in very handy. I mostly use it for the router, but the only thing you really lose for the circular saw is the chip guard so for quickly breaking up sheets to rough sizes it's perfect 👍
Excellent review and demo 👍🏽
Cheers mate, good little tool this. I tend to go to Accu-cut more, but there are some things it can't do that this can. (I've got a video on this topic too 😉) czcams.com/video/ODC2uq1jx1g/video.html
Very good review, I'll consider getting this.
Cheers Jesper. It's a straight edge with benefits 😊 For my circular saw I think I prefer the Accu-cut, but for the router this will be perfect. I'll eventually do a video comparing the two 👍
So many to choose from these days!😳
Nice job, mate. 👍🏽
Tell me about it, and more coming out later this year. Short version is you don't need them all, but it is good to have choices depending on your workshop style.
@@FixitFingers
They all do the same thing, either buy the smaller set, or if you need to cut full size sheet goods, then upgrade to the bigger set, that's it...
This is a superb review
Cheers mate! Glad it was useful 😊
Great instructional video mate! Might have to get one!
It's a great entry level bit of kit. Cheaper and more flexible uses than the Accu-Cut. As it doesn't need a sled I've found I've been reaching for it more as it is quicker to set up.
Awesome information
Thanks Liz, glad it was helpful! - James
Excellent presentation and instruction. :)
Morning Kev. Who'd have thought a straight stick could have so many pieces. 😅 I actually really like spring clamp, it works very well.
Excellent content!
Thanks P&F, happy New Years!
A very through and well presented walk-through of how to set this up. I've got something just like this I bought from aldi/Lidl years ago, but it doesn't have those adjustable wings on it
They are a nice little feature, but honestly as I already have the accu-cut I'll probably use that for the circular saw and recalibrate this for my 19mm router bit. The only reason to step up from an old straight edge to this would be if the old one wasn't actually straight 😂
Wow, great video! wonderful explanations and brilliant examples on ways to use it. Stop making us want to buy more toys!!!
While this one was not paid for it is my job as a brand ambassador to do just that 😋
I have one from Bora and love it but I keep it setup for ripping 8 ft long plywood sheets. I prefer DIY track guide for plywood cross cuts because I can lay the edge right on the cut line without bothering to put my circular saw into any kind of a holder. You sure do a great job with these types of assembly videos!
Cheers Paul. They tend to do well in the long term for views so hopefully that means they are helping a lot of folks out. I think I will be spending the next few projects working out when this one is best and when it is worth screwing the sled on. Decisions, decisions ;)
Very well explained thnks
Thanks! Hope it helps if you pick one up. As expected I've been using it a lot for router dados lately 😊
@@FixitFingers i just got it today and made the assembly after you
Nice, Enjoy it!
Nice video
Cheers mate, hope it was helpful 👍
Nice explanation! I thinking about buying it but would have been a nightmare and a lot of bad words I'm sure if I didn't have your excellent video!
Glad I could help Dean! I find I use this as expected mostly for my router, using the Accu-Cut for the circular saw most of the time... but on small cuts this is much faster than setting that up!
It's a great bit of gear mate. I just got one myself and it's been really handy, I just need to find somewhere to keep it out of the way!
Really you have one already too?! 😂 I've struggled with that with my 8 foot Accu-cut! The 4 foot version isn't too bad, I literally stand it in the naughty corner ;)
@@FixitFingers the naughty corner, yep that's where mine stays at the moment haha
I won't be using it, but an informative, clear video none the less.
Yeah, this one is for the algorithm, not my regular subscribers 😊 I've done several like it in the past and they do very well on CZcams search in the long run for people who are visual learners.
@@FixitFingers Yeah I've found similar results with certain videos like that. It's a good tutorial anyway though.
Handy bit of gear mate.
G'day Col. It will be I think. Cutting long grooves on big panels with the router I usually use the table for, but it can be tricky to get right. I've not had a reliable straight edge to do this with so I think it will find a use for that task in particular.
"liked" for the good info. "subbed" for the flashlight straightedge pro tip. CHEERS MATE THROW A SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE FOR THIS AMERICAN :)
Lasers are just straight line light right? Who needs those expensive fancy green spinning things, this thing keeps your light nice and straight 🤣
I just bought the Kreg "Accu-Cut" track saw I also bought the Kreg "Rip cut" as well.... I then said bugger it I will but the Kreg Bandsaw fence ... lol they seem pretty well made so ... I am broke now...
Oh I didn't know you could you could use you torch one them... lol
Pace yourself there Dale! Gotta be able to still buy the wood 😅
much thanks for this review! I am struggling to get the adjustable gripmaxx clamp (the clamp closest to handle) to sit flush against the edge of the board. At the 7:00 minute mark in your video it looks like you got it flush against the edge.
G'day Yusuf. Yep it sits pretty flush when in the correct position. There is slight angle to it (as thats how you slide it back and forth) but 90% of the grip max should be against the edge when clamped in. You'll notice I push down on the track a bit to get it to sit right. If it is tilted, give the handle another good pull while pushing down on the blue clamp and it should seat correctly. I hope that made sense!
Just ordered the XL! Hoping to preclude buying a track saw since I really only would need a track saw for breaking down sheet goods. Here's my main question: When you lock it down, does it lock down at 90deg, exactly, every time? Without fiddling with a square to set 90 yourself?
This my my main pain point with my homemade circ saw guides -- it's a pain to set 90 across 8ft. If this guide can really lock down 90deg, without fiddling with a square -- TOTALLY WORTH IT!
G'day mate, great question! Short answer: While you don't need a square, your cut will only be as accurate as as your measuring. If you just hook it over and lock it down without adjusting I wouldn't expect it to be perfectly square over 8 feet.
Long Answer: You really need to take a measurement at both ends of the sheet and line up the cut guides to ensure a 90 deg cut. Having said that if you are just breaking down a sheet roughly, it'll be pretty darn close if you are starting with factory edges. Keep in mind even with a real track saw or the Kreg Accu-cut, you'd need to check this over such a long distance to ensure repeatable accurate results, and the cut guides make it pretty darn fast on this model. Personally, I use the Accu-cut for track saw type work as it does it slightly better (faster line up, chip guards, reduced chance of tool wobble), but it is more expensive, requires a sled to be attached so is not as quick to setup, and can't be used with a router (or anything other than a circular saw). So you should enjoy the versatility of the simple straight edge and get good results with just a few seconds care preparing your cuts. - James
This was an excellent and thorough review, thank you! If you had to pick only one, do you think this guide or the Rip-Cut is more useful for breaking down sheet goods for someone without access to a table saw?
For simply breaking down boards into rough dimensions, this would be the better choice as you can crosscut a full sheet, something the rip-cut can't do. However, without a tablesaw for the final cuts, I'd go the Rip-Cut, as you can set repeatable and accurate cuts and quickly get things to final size. Honestly, if you don't own a tablesaw like me, both have a place in the workshop! This can do everything the rip-cut can, but the RC does it faster and more accuractly up to its capacity. Hope that helps! - James
@@FixitFingers I really appreciate the detailed response! It’s incredibly rare for a channel to take the time to answer direct questions like this. Thanks again for the great advice and keep up the excellent content! Cheers!
@@hlmk512 no worries mate. Luckily small enough I can answer every comment ;)
Nice video! How do you hang your tracks on the wall?
😅 Uummmmmm.... you caught me. Currently I don't. It sits in the corner of the shop, one of my very few tools to not have a home. However, the reason is I am planing a new workbench soon which will incorprate a storage solution very much like my Accu-Cut one which you can see here - czcams.com/video/e3SaCY23fAU/video.html :D
@@FixitFingers sounds good! Thanks Fixit
Can that one end be removed? Rivets?...screwed on? Need to have a clean straight edge for cutting sheet goods with a knife. Then reassemble for skill saw...etc. Thks....Good vid.
No they rivited on these two pieces... but if you get the XL with the extra two bits, they are plan metal with no end pieces. However I think for knife work you'd want a better ruler style edge. These are rounded over slightly so running a knife along it might not be very accurate.
do you have an issue where the edge guides (the black plastic pieces) and the blue pieces can sit slightly above the workpiece? which causes the saw or other tool to not remain perfectly flat and level with the work piece upon entering and exiting the guide.
Yes I have had this happen, usually on thin (1/2" 12 mm) or smaller stock when there is no clearance under the track. If you raise the work piece with a few bits of scrap under it to give you a little space a quick tap should seat the track properly. 👌
What is the name or style of that sawhorse you are using? That looked handy
G'day John, that's a Ryobi folding cutting bench I picked up from the local Big Box store 3 years ago. It's solid, all metal and I can stand on it. Until I recently built my new mobile bench it was my main worksurface. Someone else asked me about it recently and sadly it doesn't look like it is still made and they replaced it with this flimsy looking piece of junk :( www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-foldable-workbench-with-adjustable-angle_p5820681
Is it possible to square a panel with this guide before passing the panel through the bench saw?
It'll get you close enough! That is it's main purpose. The 8ft version can rip down sheet good _mostly_ square if you take care on setup then allow you to run them through the table saw more safely for the perfect finish.
One of the problems with the cheap straight edge clamping guides (like say.. Craftright from Bunnings) is they're not... straight. And dont' clamp well. Lots of deflection meaning they're "vaguely straight", making them useless for dados. This actually looks pretty decent in that regard. I might have to check it out a bit more 🤔
Over 1.2m at least the extruded aluminium looks pretty dead on. After 3 practice pulls I got the clamp to work easily and quickly. This wasn't meant to be a review video, but for the price point or looks pretty solid.
That _was_ some straight edge action! I dunno what the black X's on the hands is either .. ❌
Ironically I am too straight to know... It's an abstinence movement in the rock circles. Folks who party hard... with no booze, drugs, or fornication... is that still a party?! 🤔

Has the host done the comparison between Keegan AccuCut and the Krueger straight edge tool?
I meant Kreg not Krueger.
G'day Rob, I was wondering about that odd brand for a second ;) I've also got an older setup video on the Accu-Cut. I've owned that for a few years and this SEG for over a year now. I haven't directly compared them side-by-side in a video (though that is a great idea, I might do just that in the near future). The short version is the SEG is much cheaper and I mostly use it for my router and very short circular saw cuts on square boards. It will do almost everything the Accu-Cut can, except cut angle and odd-shaped stock as it needs parallel straight edges to clamp to at each end of the cut. The Accu-cut will only work with the circular saw, but does that tool better. With the grip-maxx, chip-guard, and optional track clamps making lining up cuts easier, cleaner, and more accurate, I probably use the Accu-Cut more than my SEG. If you see yourself using it for a router often and/or are budget conscious, go the SEG. If mostly for the circ-saw (particularly if looking at the XL versions) the Accu-Cut is a better choice. Stay tuned, I might film that comparison video for you soon ;)
....and new video done! I just realised I promosied to make this video at the end of the SEG setup one :P Thanks for the push Rob, I hope you find it helpful - czcams.com/video/ODC2uq1jx1g/video.html
Is Quarter Past Snug the same as Beer O'Clock? 😀
No, I believe beer o'clock is a touch before snug... 😂 🍻
I can see me cutting those wings off the second time I used it 👍 🤣
Technically even if you forgot to retract you shouldn't hit them if you calibrated it correctly.... But you might give them a tiny trim 😅
@@FixitFingers You don't know me very well!
🤣🤣🤣
I would never underestimate your skill to destroy things... And rebuild it better 😉
I proper laughed at this comment Tony! 🤣
@@JamesManCave That's because you know me a bit better than Fixit does 👍 😁 (and thanks for the rebuild it better reply Fixit)
does this mean accu cut is a junk?
Not exactly. You could get away with just this straight edge fine. It is cheaper and will do almost the same job. The accu-cut is a dedicated circular saw track. It is more accurate, has a chip guard for better cuts, and the sled is interchangeable with the rip-cut for a great combo. I use both tools, but it's a great new option.
Boo! The width of the fence guide is too short. I need to make a 24 in deep rip cut.
Did you mean a 24 inch long cut? The regular SEG should be able to handle that, it can do half a sheet of ply. If it is too short you can get the XL version that doubles the length 😊
Sound boring, and easily fall into sleepy.
Hmmmm you might be onto something there... I'd never thought of using my content to treat insomnia... 🤔 Genius! I could reach a whole new audience 😃 Cheers mate 😴😴😴😴
The Bora Straight edge guide better i had the kreg its garbage
Not played with one of those. Looks nearly identical in price and build except for the clamping style. Did you find the underside clamp easier to use than the Kreg pull handle?
