The Karoo of South Africa

  • This video is about the Karoo of South Africa. The Karoo is a vast semi-arid region of central and southern South Africa, roughly twice the size of France. It covers 45% of South Africa itself and was traditionally exploited by low-intensity sheep farming. Today, expansive game reserves are returning some of the land to its pre-European condition and stocking it with indigenous wildlife. The Karoo is a tough landscape with hardy rural communities pitted against the harsh conditions of the near-desert environment. The geology of the Karoo is famous for its expansive, flat-lying outcrops of Permian and Early Triassic sediments. These rocks are host to some of the world's best fossil reptiles representing the early evolution of land animals.

Im from Cape Town and I just returned from the Karoo, the bug has bit me, definitely one of the most awe inspiring places. A place of beauty.

Welcoming in it's vastness of sky and land, mile after mile of exquisite plant life and geological formations, Karoo, is one of South Africa's crowning glories. The isolation, stillness, only broken at the turn of windmills on a breeze of glorious fresh, clear air, then, as night descends, you become part of the Milky Way, so close, reachable by finger tips, what's not to love in all it's majesty. I love your pictures, especially of Matjiesfontein.I worked there 3 times and loved every minute. The residents are so friendly and helpful. It is a big pity that David Rawdon is no longer around to see his village become what it is today. Its just the prices of the hotel that must be reduced.Matjiesfontein, may you prosper for later generations....

  • @capefox8321

France is 643,800 sq.km. in size, the Karoo only 395,000 sq. km. so it's definitely not twice the size of France - and it covers one-third of the surface area of South Africa.

That is amazing insight. I have read that the name Karoo is suspected to come from the indigenous peoples, meaning 'land of thirst'.
This French Hugonot meaning however makes more sense.
