  • This week we find ourselves in one of our absolute favorite little towns in South Africa! Nieu Bethesda, in the Great Karoo has only gravel roads, no street lights, ATM's or any of life's fancy pleasures, but never fails to surprise us with all the interesting spots to visit!

    Thanks, that was really nice; Sweet little town; Nice pics; I used to do a lot of those fun getaways, to odd places, but, for now, I can only watch and admire from a distance;

    Visitors to small Karoo towns are always welcome. When city dwellers come to Karoo towns it reminds one of that Irish folk song - "The strangers came and tried to teach us their ways and scorned us for being what we were ...." They leave and the Karoo dwellers have to live with their changes. Pity

    For a couple of years in the mid eighty's, myself and a few friends would drive up from Cape Town to spend Christmas at the Buddhist retreat Centre that was in Nieu Bethesda at that time. It was much different, no restaurants or tourist stops, even the Owl House needed that you ask to see inside. We would go to the General Store, usually once during the day, to get small things. At the counter was a dear old woman, very Afrikaans, very polite. I'm not sure if it's the same store you go in to, it was a long time ago and i don't remember.
    On one trip we had some German friends with us, one of them asked the woman in the store how many people lived in Nieu Bethesda? With a straight face she answered that there were, " 36 Christians, and 10 people who were making their own arrangements". 10 was the number of Buddhists living at the retreat center. We laughed at her veiled comment that we were all going to hell for years. I'm sure she is dead now, as she was old then, but I still laugh if I happen to recall that day.
    Enjoyed the video, thank you.

      hahahaha thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment, and to be honest, not much has changed these days beside the Buddhist retreat no longer being there and the town having increased to a whopping 63 permanent residents (from what we last heard)... Such a quaint little town that absolutely embodies the term "Getting away from it all"... DEFINITELY one of our absolute favorites!

    How do I achieve this with work ? I long to travel through South Africa but full time jobs make it impossible.. also how does one afford this ? I’m so intrigued I could do this all the time and live inside a caravan

      Hey Jade :-) Thanks for the comment. We too find ourselves at this point unable to travel on a full-time basis as we have 3 teenagers at home that we are waiting to finish up with matric before we can think of doing it for a living. Our plan in the interim is to try and build up as much residual income with the purchase of assets as well as "up-skilling" ourselves with qualifications that would be sought after jobs to do as we travel (dive master, yoga instructors course etc.) I currently am also a full-time photographer & run my own social media business which will enable me to continue working no matter where I am as long as I have some wifi. Other options would be to sign up with a freelance work website, teach English online, become a virtual assistant (I know they make pretty good cash), so perhaps start a sideline thing for yourself after hours for now, and build up from there...easier said than done, but I suppose one has to start somewhere?
