- Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000 aka one half of the mighty Outkast sits down with GRAMMY.com for an interview with Nick Huff Barili of Hard Knock TV. The conversation covers a range of topics including how Andre transformed into Jimi Hendrix for the movie All By My Side by losing 20 pounds, learning Jimi’s voice, how to play guitar left handed, his mannerisms and how he walked. Andre has earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead for his portrayal of Jimi Hendrix. When talking about what personally resonated most about Jimi Hendrix’s life and career Andre states “The human side of knowing what its like to be a new artist and trying to break out. Not even just break out into an industry but break out of yourself. And trying to find your confidence in it.” Andre goes on to talk about how important Jimi’s support team was stating “Any artist that we love, any artist that we see, I don’t care who it is, you can name your favorite artists, they would not be who they are if it wasn’t the people around. It doesn’t necessarily have to be famous people, it could be a friend, could be a parent, it could be someone hanging around in the studio, these are the people that help make the artist.” When asked about Jimi Hendrix not wanting to define his music as a particular genre Andre elaborates “I think everybody in any industry if someone likes you for a certain thing and you have any inclination to do anything different you will be pulled back in a certain way. Andre continues stating “When it comes to presenting art forms that kinda are of based on how you feel as a human it hard to keep yourself in a certain place. It’s kinda wrong to do it I think. Some people are good at it because they have gotten it down to a formula but I’ve never have gotten into it. The thing I get out of it is stretching it out and having fun with it so as long as I can be shooting for the stars with it and people are along for the ride, that’s what I’m in it for.” When asked if Outkast purposely tried to reinvent themselves after every album Andre explains, “ It’s not a plan, I swear it was never a plan. It really boils down to the time in between the albums, like the life you lived, your influences during that time, you know turning on to new music, getting bored. All those things make up whatever the next album would have been. We were in a different time, like now you have artists that drop 3-4 mixtapes a year and an album. You have to think we where like two years between every album. We were, daam near different people between every album. We were kids when they first met us, so by the time yall saw us at you know Stankonia and all those albums we where just growing into being an adult, not really knowing what we were about, or trying to figure out what we were about. You were just seeing growth and the music went with it.” The video interview covers much, much more including Andre talking about wanting to keep hip hop “hip” with young energy, now having more fun performing, tour jumpsuits, his clothing line and Andre closes out the interview by sharing advice to young artists.

I'd listen to an Andre 3000 album about raising a 16 year old and prostate exams.
Truth.
I heard you're a crack baby.
yup he'd find a way to drop gems on us
So if my dad wrote it?
Dylan Nolan Yo daddy ain't the greatest rapper of all time tho....
little does he know he's the only legend we want to hear an album from
Mani Stated literally the onky one. fuck jay-z fyck snoop. fuck everybody but 3k. his music is timeless.
I'm sure he's aware. The thing is I don't think he's capable of making an album that he himself wants to hear. As an artist who won't ever be a fraction of the artist Andre was on his worst day, I can relate to that still.
PERIOD
It’s a big shame he isn’t more recognised. In my opinion, he brought a unusual freshness to hip hop which doesn’t happen often, similar to MF Doom.

We need another era where young rappers came to fuck shit up and not to chase trends and a check.
We got Odd Future, Exodus, and other rappers doing shit like that my man. Trust me, it's coming.
I hear ya Jay Rock
Dezmond Odd Future fell off real quick though. They were gigantic for a few years, but it's rare to hear about them lately. Of course, Earl's new album is proving me to be sorta wrong on that, and Tyler says he wants to pull a Beyonce and release an album out of nowhere, so there is hope.
Truth
don222able Like already mentioned, Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt but you also have J Cole, Vince Staples, Joey Badass, TDE (Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab Soul, Isaiah Rashad), HBK (Sage the Gemini, Iamsu, etc), Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Childish Gambino, Goldlink, even female rappers like Angel Haze and Tink, and many more!!! They're out there, you just have to search now. Hell, even Jaden and Willow Smith are making good music that is completely going against the grain.
this dude doesn't know how great his influence to the masses has been..
I feel ya on that... It's like regardless of when this man go into the grave, his plot will immediately become a fort Knox!!!... #unlreleasedknowledge
yeah he does. thats why he sittin back now. hes done what he had to do.
A silent killer
Who is he?
@@twister4489 exactly & as far as i know he had 1 hit& a really shit j hendrix movie
His explanation on why he doesn't want to rap past 40 is too real. Andre is arguably one of the greatest MCs of all-time, and as much as I would love for him to drop another album, I just know people are going to say "It could've been better" instead of appreciating the art for what it is. That's the time we're in now.
i think the reason that 3000 can say that whole thing is that he also makes music that is stylistically not always hip hop, so he can make music that sounds however and still be hip hop and express hip hop through other forms of music
He shouldn't give up on hip hop if he's older it's artists who still do variations of music such as bb.king, slayer and etc.
Mechacelzi I agree that growing older doesn't mean to stop putting out music. Some musicians best works are in their older age. I hear George Harrison's last album "Brainwashed," and it's just amazing and hits things on the head so well!
I'm not going to pretend I know a lot about hip hop, other than I like the sound, but I would think it'd be similar. To just keep with music and evolve as your experiences change. But I see his point on not forcing it. Forcing it makes it not as real, and people can see when stuff's not real.
In the end, it's all up to what the musician's feeling. He may change his mind as inspiration hits...happens a lot where you think someone's done and they surprise you with a new, fantastic album :)
AshleenWoods well, about the hip hop part just start from the beginning and origins of it. Buts yes you are right about as artists get older they mature and progress as greater artists. I hope he doesn't give up on emceeing because he's too talented to waste that I see a lot greater emcees like kid rock and everlast of house of pain wast their skills by crossing over and forgetting where they originated from.
Mechacelzi yoooooo you just said everlast! i was thinking about that dude the other day. you remember how in the late nineties he came back, like you was mentioning, but was kinda singing and played the guitar, but then someone dissed him. i think it was fred durst, now that i think of it, then he came out with a diss track and murdered cats, while reminding people what he can do on the mic.
I could never imagine andre 3000 NOT being hip
andre crazy, his style of rap can never go out of style
I get where he's coming from. But come on, he's ANDRE 3000!!! A legend! He's never NOT going to be hip, no matter his age. I really hope he finds some kind of inspiration soon and surprises (blesses) the music world with another album. No doubt, if he comes back on the scene, the ENTIRE hip hop industry will pay attention
You mean the entire world.
+Nicholas Butler Yeah I mean he kinda has a point, but its like yeah, its like d'angelo - just come out with a fucking album bruh we love your music it has nothign to do with your age!!! no one has his style or flo. anyway have you heard the new joint he's on with erykah?
+butler stbutler I totally agree with everything you say. he is hip hop and it will be awesome if you did bless us new music... he'd blow us away!!!
Highly intelligent, and very well spoken. Andre is very inspirational, and over-all gifted.
Andre is real AF. And humble as hell
Such an intelligent guy. Love listening to him speak.
Andre chose to bow out at the right time. Brilliant. Made people want more.
Please lets start a petition on getting at least an 8 track album from Andre 3000 before he drops off the scene . . .just press like . . .
And yes Dre, we want to hear about parenting because you are the only brotha that can actually make it sound 'hip'
SoulVibez you’re absolutely right
SoulVibez facts. all facts. nothing but the facts.
i just want his knowledge and to share love w him
“ I told my niggas man up , cause we got children” -shy glitzy (ohana)
I hear what you’re saying but I think we should respect his wishes he put in a work
This dude is hella cool.
he talks exactly how he raps 😂 that's a true rapper! 3 stacks please make more music
Andre as Jimi was one of the best performances I've ever seen.
Deserved an Oscar nomination.
Unfortunately, not many saw the movie.
“You’re only as good as the music you grew up to”…never heard a better quote 👑
Imma need the interviewer to be a lil more excited to talk to 3000! Everybody doesn't get to do this!
Decovia79 rappers and famous people in general would get so over excited people. Surely they look forward to having a conversation with someone who sees them as normal people and not superstars.
This man is my hero
MultiLelde idk about hero but he is one of tge only ppl i admire besides my dad and a few other men i go to church with.
I can't wait for the Outkast biopic in the future so I can see that legendary scene "the south got something to say too" get acted out
me too
Andre is THAT nigga, but he needs to bless us with ONE solo hip-hop album before he retires..
I feel like him and Kendrick would be best friends
They're both Geminis so they should be kindred spirits.
@@rasungod7257 You devalue people's individuality with that horoscope nonsense.
Brick Maestro astrology’s far more complex than what’s often understood, but I will wonder about if its still reductive ty
Stylistically, I don’t think anyone influenced Kendrick more than OutKast, especially Andre.

I once wrote a long...sort of essay on how André 3000 is the best rapper - one of the best writers. All about how the mark of a good writer is expressing your ideas creatively and well - and it just amazes me how efficient he is. A decade passes without an album but he drops Bibles on T.I.'s and Rick Ross' records recently. He's fucking timeless - I just hope he finds inspiration 'cause he's probably the most capable rapper out there.
Clockwork link to essay ?
I know this comment is two years old but most capable rapper out there is an excellent way to some this guy up. Does he have one bad verse anywhere? Why other rappers even let him rap on their songs is crazy, every Andre verse sound better then you verse Rick Ross, TI, DJ Unk, etc on and on, On the Rich Boy song his verse is the best and dosent even have anything to do with the song Throw Some D's, Listen to it he doesnt mention throwing no D'son nothing LOL
@@GeraldHarris-cf2zh when you can tell a story like he does, now that's talent, these newbies can't touch
I can respect his decision to quit at 40, but he should never stop!
I think he's the coldest emcee of all time! And he was always spitting nothing but truth!
Tightest flow on earth!
I love the evolution of both Dre and Big Boi from teenagers to now! But Dre is so sick!
Outcasts from all over the world love Outkast!
Y'all are the prototypes!
Forever in my heart!
Andre 3000 please make new music. Your music takes me to another level. The world needs you. Please dont use age an excuse. Love and respect
He still makes music hes just not releasing it.
Andre is the truth, love him. We really need some music from this man.
andre 3000?? LEGEND
He seems to have a very different mentality than all rappers I know when it comes to the issue of aging and handing down the mic to the new generations. He seems very respectful of today's youth, I take my hat off to him for that. However, to me, nothing today is remotely comparable to what used to be made in the hip hop scene...
I am an Andre 3 Stacks & Outkast fan for life! Watching his transformation as an artist through the years, has been very inspiring! His aurora is amazing, Andre is my long standing celebrity crush.
3stacks is a true original. He will never be duplicated
He only says that he doesn't want to emcee at 40 because maybe be he feels that he has to be with the times or something like that. But all he has to do is be the best him and have his own musical production sound. He can still flow....
getting old is scary. and the fact that time goes by so fast is so scary.
3000 is a legend.
Those sunglasses are so trippy...looks like he has HUGE eyes lol anyways great interview I got mad respect for 3000

Andre is the definition of diligence i hope he makes some music when’s he’s feeling it
Fuck he is so Wise. great interview nothing but respect.
So thankful to have been raised on his music
I'm from California, and loved West and East Coast hip hop growing up. Who would have thought my favorite artist would be from Atlanta? Yep. Andre. From the day I bought Outkast's first album and bumped it on my graduation day in 94, I watched them grow and have grown right along with them. Outkast, my favorite group. Andre, my favorite mc.
I discovered Outkast at 12 years old, now at almost 40 the love never changed. I'll always be a fan, and an admirer. As young as they were, they brought a classiness, maturity, originality, and level of awareness to Rap/Hip-Hop that can't be questioned or challenged. 'Them n-ggas earned that crown' hands down, and I respect his choice to bow out gracefully as a great....whether HE acknowledges it or not!
It’s crazy how talented this man is
No matter how old you are, we need to see more of that gorgeous smile... in our lives...
love his voice
Honestly, his explanation on why he doesn’t want to make albums is mad real. But he still could be mentoring other artists and just sharing ideas and stuff, so if he does that - that’s completely cool with me.
He has a record label I’m sure he is
ANDRE GETS IT!
Rappers need to know when to hang them up and branch out into bigger things
Andre knows his place and accepts the fact that he has nothing new to offer in the rap game in comparison to new artists.
A true artist
Ok it's been 7 years and still ain't no new "artist" who's best verse slaps even half as hard as Dre's worst... He made way but nobody came through

I wish he would talk about Class of 3000
He did a great job in the Jimi Hendrix movie.
Grown man talk at 6:00 I appreciate his honesty and it make clear how I feel about some of these cats getting into the game or staying too long

He can rap about other things though. He can rap about what's going on in the world at current, what his take on it is, and his growth as an artist, there's still stuff to talk about.
exactly ! i'm surprised that he feels only young peeps can still rap
Maryse Matoko Common, Nas, and others do it.
+lifestraight i Knowles. i could add MF Doom, Mos Def, Declaime, Ghostface...
What was crazy was that verse on birds in the trap talking about the new artists get their verses written, and how it kills him that some of the new artists aren't being their true selves
OutKast is my favorite rap group of all time. I’m 32 and my brother was 11 years older than me so I was heavily influenced by his choice of music and OutKast was his favorite as well. My brother passed recently and OutKast always gives me a reminder and a connection to my brother. Let me say Andre there is nobody more “Hip” than you, and whether you continue to rap or not you will never know the impact you had on me, my brother and the rest of the world. We honor you. #Goat
WHATEVER HIDEOUT ANDRE IN I NEED TO BE THERE !!!!
This makes me so sad.. to know we'll probably never hear new music from Andre.. I don't care about him being hip, I would listen because everything he's created has been nothing but greatness.. Regardless, he will remain one of my faves for LIFE.
If this man dropped one solo album it's been best album ever made
It’s so refreshing to see this man after all these years and he has a beautiful smile with it. This was the era of the 90s. And to see that he is still alive and breathing now and just yeah, he grew up to be is still an amazing artist
Please drop a solo album before u retire #andre 3000 #DF# OUTKAST#Kings of the south

My niggga! !!!!!
id kill to see them make a movie of when they were 19 making their first album
I never knew he played Jimi Hendrix. That’s crazy! I need to see it!
Silverback Stacks...BEAST. He was killing the game at 17 years old. Outkast, they were like heroes to us growing up in GA b/c we felt like they were our voice, before then no one had represented us down here.
OMG I want that Gremlin shirt!
I could listen to this man speak all day every day.
Dope interview! 💯Andre = 🐐
3 Stacks' portrayal of Jimi Hendrix was everything I thought it'd be and more. He did a great job.
I will say that I enjoyed this interview...mostly the "not rapping past 40" part. I think this something to consider when we ask our favorite artists to put out stuff. Though I would love to see another Outkast album or 3000's solo album, I can respect it if nothing comes out. Besides, it's always nice to retire on top.
Love Andre 3000! Such a funny guy
Every time I see this man talk, I like and respect him even more.
Wow Andrè is one wise man! One of the realest artists ever! One word to describe him: #Greatness
Man, I'd love to hear another album, hell even just another song from Andre 3000!
Andre is a chilla, love him. He also clearly knows when to not milk success for all its worth, unlike Jay-Z and Eminem who are churning out shit these days. Outkast's discography is pretty damn consistent because they knew when to stop. Some great points about new music and artists too.
Umm Lol em is not that bad as u think
To say that about Jay-Z and Eminem truly shows me and everyone looking in this comment section
HOW MUCH OF A JACKASS
YOU REALLY ARE
Paul Schmidt jay z redeemed himself with 444 and more amazing albums like black album blueprint American gangster etc. meanwhile Eminem after Eminem show been dropping nothing but mediocrity and trash along with here and there average at best albums.
