    WOW! I just started reading Stephen Hawking's book "A Brief History of Time", less than 2 hours ago, which has an intro from Carl Sagan which describes how he just happened to walk into a room at the Royal Society in 1974, and witness Stephen Hawking signing that very same book. And now I am seeing the signature he was talking about.
    My mind is blown!

    Mary Somerville deserves *at least* one whole episode just to herself. I mean, she was not just a mathematician, but an astronomer, a physicist, a popularizer, and literally the first scientist in history!

      Good question. From what I've been researching, Kathleen Lonsdale, from the field of crystallography, signed it in 1945, making her signature the first female one, I think…
      Though Marjory Stephenson from the biochemical/microbiological field also signed in 1945, I think Kathleen Lonsdale's name appeared first.

    I was kind of expecting Hawiking's signature to start on one page, go through 2 or 3 more (pen-ripped) pages and end on the forth diagonally across. ^_^

    Wow, is this really authentic? By "authentic" I mean is this a printed copy of some sort, or is this the actual signatures - the exact ink and paper, etc. used by the scientists?

      apburner1 You don't have to be a British subject to be a member of the Royal Society, they elect 10 foreign members each year. Einstein was a member of the Royal Society and should have gotten to sign the book but they just failed to arrange for him to find time to go to London and physically sign the book in his lifetime.

      +dssdassw For further geekiness, the Universal Machine Code for Time Travel, as it's called in Futurama, is also a Simpson's joke where in the episode in which Lisa things she's getting dumber there's a puzzle she can't solve which is the numerals reflected and mashed together with its reflection. As such, the code is 1 through 6 in 3 digit binary and its reflection.
