Oh, there's Brian Cox.... Oh! there's this Brady Haran. He's practiced it three or four times, must be an important guy.
-random onlooker from the future
And future researchers will go crazy trying to find him in the membership book.
"Oh thats Sir Dr Haran, the royal videographer being knighted for his outstanding expansion of the english language."
-guy next to the random onlooker from the future
That would be Future Keith
My name's James, it really freaked me out when Brady asked if James wanted a go cause he looked straight at the camera I was like wtf that's not how CZcams videos work.
If I used CZcams as a platform to connect with people I know from real life I would use my real name, but I don't, so I use my online name.
Or is it?
Imagine Brady becoming a member of the Royal Society! That would be such an amazing honour!
Carl Lange I think he would faint
I dunno, he's bringing the Society's labour to many people who wouldn't know otherwise, he's making a stronge case for himself to be recognized somehow in the future.
That's Dr. Brady Haran to you.
Sir Martyn Poliakoff managed to get knighted for his contributions to chemical sciences. So I would not rule that out as well.
Well, he has genuely made a significant contribution to science with his channels. Helping to tell lots of people what science is about is a great thing to be made.
Good grief I'd think that practice sheet would be worth preserving in its own right. It'd be quite a collector's item. Especially now with Brady's signature on it :D
i objectively enjoy this channel
Gabe Sewell you're supposed to say, "first".
IamTills change it up a lil
"Comon Brady, you're not five".
Well....
Another awesome video. I love Brady and Keith!
"In the fullness of time" oh, oh, Keith was channelling Sir Humphrey...
Objectivity: Office Supplies Edition. Ink wells and pens are so awesome, I have my own set. Another awesome episode, Keith; we got new objects and some behind the scenes of The Royal Society!
Love this so much! Makes me want to rush out and buy a fountain pen...
What if this is a marketing scheme for fountain pens...
When I was learning to write in Japanese, I was advised to use a fountain pen; the way you have to use strokes is apparently much more similar to calligraphy than how you use a normal ballpoint pen (especially in cursive), so it's easier to learn. I use a ballpoint pen now, but the way I do strokes is still a bit different than when I write in English.
is that the first time we've seen James in Objectivity?
What amazing things you get to enjoy. Thanks for taking us along.
"And with what quill did the Secretary of the Society for the Suppression of Cruelty to Ganders formally indite his circulars? It is only within the last month or two that that society passed a resolution to patronize nothing but steel pens."
5:34 The right honorable BLOLY HAN.

LOL
keith's face imagining all the hurt that would come upon brady
You know, all joking aside I think Brady may be in line for some sort of recognition considering the amount of attention he's brought to the International Community about the Royal Society.
He did get an honourary doctorate from the U of N...
And Computerphile and Numberphioe and ...
I love that a worm got in! It gives them so much character. Awesome video!
I really like this channel, always interesting.
I mean, even if it isn't the actual book, it's still an honor to be on actual RS parchment, used by fellows like Brian Cox (OBE, FRS)
This reminds me that we still learned to write with a fountain pen. I haven't used one of those in decades. I have used dip pens in arts & crafts. Those are quit a bit harder to use.
That was more awesome than it has sense being!
Rumor has it that, Brady is still practicing his pen and ink signature.
Come on just give him a nice certificate :) he could be a 'very' special member...
"Marital concerns continue to bedevil me." dip dip dip
I kept thinking "Don't be using iron gall ink, don't be using iron gall ink, that stuff is slow-burning evil--" and then you showed the Winsor and Newton bottle. Sigh of relief. But, has Keith done any Chinese calligraphy? I notice he holds his pen the same way I do--resting on the knuckle of his ring finger. This is 'verboten' in traditional handwriting manuals, but it's precisely how you hold a calligraphy brush (which I found out by accident in university when my Chinese professor had us try some and all I had to do was tip my pen up rather than change grip).
Sounds like a nut
When I was in school we used ink and steel nib pens. then switched after a year ( when we could write somewhat legibly) to pencil, and ballpoint pens. Still have a Rotring pen set around, used to do technical drawing, where the permanent lines were in ink, while pretty much all of the rest were in assorted pencil hardnesses. Don't think any school though has a TD class any more though, it went the way of the Dodo as well, like the fountain pen.
In Germany we used steel nib pens too because the teachers said ballpoint pens would be bad for the handwriting. I still have mine somewhere here.
Sometimes the most inconsequential videos are the most entertaining.
Ok but when will we have an Objectivity feature on the Royal Society's greatest living treasure?

I'm talking about Keith, of course.
That's really cool
Keith IS the man!!!
This was a fun one. Mr. Keith looked good and healthy.
Brady is handed a dip pen and genuinely is baffled by the technology. I feel so old.
I'd love a go, but then again, I've been using calligraphy pens for a couple of decades, though I've never used a dipper pen. Must try that.
So - one for holding the quill, one with ink and one with sand?
Please do a video about Keith!
Whoa. Brady an honorary fellow? It could actually happen, that's an exciting thought!
Ironically I am watching this while inking a comic page : D - with a dip pen and ink. This... got me so excited and I cry a bit the way you dip that poor pen in. Its weird how no matter what you do - with a certain size audience you will have somebody who is an expert in whatever you're doing. (I am NOT an expert, but very used to pen and ink - but i am really bad at calligraphy!).
I wonder why Keith gave you non waterproof ink - just because its a practice sheet? Or are those priceless signatures actually done in non-waterproof ink? There are inks that need a bit air drying to get their final color / water resistant.
Thank you, Brady, this was very interesting to me.
Keith with the incredibly British backhanded compliment. 😂
3:05 made me think. The nib's the most important part of the pen, so I'm not sure about saying the pen itself is old if the nib's been changed.
A bit nit-picky, I know, but with a dip pen you can still (not comfortably) write with just the nib and not the holder, but without the nib the holder is just a block of wood.
that practice piece of paper could be a " less popular " museum piece
James
Brady, get yourself a Pilot Varsity or Lamy Safari and practise with modern fountain pens. Good pens will not give any line breaks, blots or thickness variation with speed of writing. Look up the Parker 51 - best fountain pen ever made.
That fountain pen is good. Though I imagine it's not a particularly good pen for writing a square...
I have a Lamy AL-Star and I'm just in love with it
Ironic that the best thing ever has the name "Parker".
Please let Keith record a few audio books!
Does Keith ever gets mad?
Keith transcends human concepts such as anger!
Probably very rarely, but if he does you know you've really cocked it up.
real life alfred
Thank fuck its Keith. He's a boss.
- You are getting worse Brady, not better.
I fully expected an outtake at the end, showing Brady signing the charter book and messing it up....
After using up four spots on the test parchment, it only makes sense to let him sign the book!
Brady. Royal Society groupie.
And if you gave the pen a good flick, you could get ink all down the back of the Master's gown. Can't do that with a ballpoint!
Is Keith a Member of the Royal Society?
>Featuring Keith Moore from The Royal Society speaking with Brady.
I think he is the librarian, not a fellow.
I don't think he's a fellow of the society. But Head Librarian seems like a pretty impressive position in it's own right.
That's a good question! I feel like being "a member" and "working for" might be different, but I'm not sure.
I mean, it is a good question whether or not the people who work FOR the society are members of it. I think they are not, but I would be interested if there are positions that automatically grand membership, or is it completely separated.
Does liking this channel make me an Objectivist?
What is it like to write on animal skin instead of paper ?
kieth can spike up his hair and compare it against the professor
"There's decades to go" HAHAHAHAHA
How come Myke Hurley is not in a video about pen and ink
I must be getting old. Brady doesn't know how to use a pen with nib! This is what I used in primary school in the 1950s. Each desk had its own little ink well in the top right corner. (left handers discouraged!)
Explorer II?
Maybe do a remembrance of Dr Goodall.
Oh no! You've blotted your copy book now Brady!
Marty and the Professor doing a prequal it seems.
I used the same ink to ink comics.
Myke from Cortex would probably physically melt if he got near these sort of things.
Your blotting was *CAUSING* the smudges. Just let the ink blob dry: you were in no rush.
could have been more sparing on the amount of space you took BH, others did it in small sets, but not the Film star
One day I hope to be a fellow. Medical stuff is stored there too, right?
Great video, Brady is being very bashful today
"Suddenly, the room flooded with members of the Royal Society, leaded by their president. A hole opens between the members, and the Queen Herself emerges, followed by a member holding a sceptre. The Queen looks at Brady, and says: " Brady Haram... Kneel"
"Bradley Haram"
A big sister emerged at the back --- mo--si---go---ra 😂😂😂
I make my own ink and pens, as well as I love writing with glass pens. This looks like a lot of my attempts. I'm still trying to get the consistency of my ink to work well with both quill and glass pens. This offer is for Brady alone - BTW, if you want some of the ink I made, I have around a gallon of it. I'll give you 1.5 oz of it for the asking along with a quill pen I carved myself. If you wish a refill, I'll do that as well. Pre-tested of course to make sure it works. Keep up the good work. I love your videos on all your channels. Please, ask me, I'd love to see you try it out on one of your videos.
It wants a good dip in silver cleaner.....but hey, London, sulfur....
Perhaps a silly question but is there a non-animal-skin option for Vegan scientists? I know this is an old tradition and it might well not, but it seems a little squick to not give an option.
I’ve always wanted to use one of those things but it would be a waste. My handwriting is horrible.
PinkChucky15 Well, you can try! A fine dip nib or two and a simple holder are very cheap, a couple pounds altogether. You can use basically any sort of ink; a bottle of india ink is readily available and also very cheap. Handwriting can improve A LOT with practise!
Myke is probably so jealous.
brady would deserve it if only for the public outreach he does with all these videos.
science today is seen as out of touch and out of reach of the average person even as they are bathed in it.
Yes , to explain science is a vital part of the gig, these two are grande special an fun...I nominate the pair ! Make it thus !
Write your name big... it impresses girls.
Just like having big tires on your truck impresses girls, right? (Hint: It doesn't.)
Keith, don't get too slim. The ladies don't like it too slim. Think of your fans...

It hurts me to see how unskilled Brady is with a dip pen. Great video, though.
The vegans are up in arms!
Green Silver actually i was wondering if i would sign if i had the opportunity
Bradys inexperience with pens makes me cringe
I'd probably feel the same way if I saw you wicketkeeping in a cricket match. :)
that feeling when the commonwealth folks are talking and you don't know if they're insulting you...
Without a few practice goes first I'd probably mess up, very swoopy signature. It's been many years since I've used pen & ink.
