Volvo uses real life scenarios to make their cars safer. My dad was in a very horrific car accident when he was T-boned by a timber truck at night, it was a Volvo V60 and while he was in the ICU for about a month he survived. My dad had worked at Volvo for 15 years or so pretty high up with advanced engineering - things like advanced super high strength steel and stuff like that. And the guy's over at Volvo told my dad that he indirectly saved his own life, because during the development of the V60 car he told his team he wasn't happy with the side impact protection saying they could do better, so they delayed it to make it safer. Couple years later he is driving that model, gets t-boned and survives when he probably wouldn't in another car at the time. Volvo took that V60 back to their safety center and investigated it after the police had investigated the accident. I love Volvo and their culture of making things better.

My neighbor even entered in an ancient lower formula car (F3000 or so) that he called the wasp. He later crashed it. I remember checking out the cars the evening prior to the last race and for the first time seeing a Ferrari Testarossa (There is a YT Video ofthe same car doing the climb).
Eventhough the event was shut down after 2012 for safety reasons, the road still exists (It is the L3272). It has been used mostly by bikers. Driving up there is tremendous fun. I don‘t have a license yet as I am not old enough, but one time my dad drove my grandma‘s Ford Fiesta 1.25 with 82hp up there on its pure limit. It was truly amazing and as a passenger I got so much adrenaline.
I love your vids and I would love you to check this beauty of a road out!

I have always believed that cars build in 80s and early 90s are more or less indestructible. I have -85 w123 Mercedes and they have never let me down. Cars were build different back then. There is short series of "Fifth Gear" testing how can you kill an old Merc ( a wagon ;) )? Not really totaling it like they do in the Volvo video, but entertraining none the less. If you are interested it's called "Can You Kill An Old Merc?". It's in 3 parts about 5-6 mins each. Keep up the nice work, your enthusiasm is fun to watch.

A family friend used to have a Volvo 850 turbo wagon with a manual transmission. One day we were having a 4th of July (i think it was) gathering, and he was supposed to be coming, but he didn't show up until an hour late.
Turns out he had left the car running and in neutral and had gone back into the house to get something. The car rolled down his driveway, across the street, and went off of a 9 foot ledge down into the parking lot of a commercial building where it proceeded to take out an A/C unit and hit the brick wall behind it. All 4 of the windows and the back window were shattered, the doors wouldn't open well, and the whole car was visibly bent, but he drove it right back up the hill, and about 40 miles away to where we were like nothing happened. He drove it for a few weeks until getting something else, but the car still ran and drove fine after that whole ordeal.
My 1992 Volvo 240 has 332k miles on it right now, and it had NOT been taken care of by the previous owners, but it still runs and drives great. I also have an 89 240 which only has 115k miles on it, so I should never have to buy another car in my life.

I had an accident with the lovely Austin Montego I inherited from my mother. Monty held up really well and protected me, but was destroyed. When an Opel dealer near my place had this old clunker, a Volvo 244GL from 1977, on sale for a song, basically for scrap, I was happy to take it due to its reputation fro safety, I still was slightly shaken by my crash.
Its Borg Warner BW55 automatic transmission, black leather seats and green tinted windows made it top of the range equipped for a 1977 244. Over the next 17 years that I owned this "clunker" and had many many thousands of happy kilometres of driving it including a holiday in southern England, it hardly ever required more than oil and water checked to run. Spark plugs and an alternator were due at some point.
I worked at an up market car dealership in Bonn/Germany in 1995 for some time and got to drive Jaguars, big Mercedes and BMWs, even two Rolls Royce and an Aston Martin Lagonda.
I found that Jaguars were _the_ comfiest of all, but at modest speeds and normal street usage, my 244 GL didn't lag behind them too much. I think Rolls Royce even bought the BW55 for their cars as well. Add to that a reliability even the much cheered for German cars could only dream of, the red four cylinder Volvo engine is legendary for beating all others in endurance, that was quite something!
The 244 is f***ing brilliant on black ice. When it starts skidding and slipping sideways, I found the easiest way to straighten it up was to let the engine idle and let go of the steering wheel. The modest torque the engine brake applied to the rear wheels was little enough to allow them catch traction again and strong enough to keep the engine ahead of the rear wheels. The geometry of the front axle would pull the steering to the right degree for the front wheels to catch. My 244 taught me drifting as well.
Man, I _LOVED_ my 244! It got old as well, though, and was in need of extensive work I couldn't afford to have done and couldn't do myself, lacking the space. When I got a job offer abroad in 2008 I decided it was time to part ways with my good old buddy and it got to a friend of mine who is a _real_ Volvo nutt. It has been living there ever since and still is going strong.
Saftey-wise my 244 got 4 minor hits from other cars while I owned it. They didn't even leave a mark. The 5th, the most intense hit, was a Mercedes 190 E 2.3. Somehow its driver didn't see us at a red traffic light on a hot sunny 1992 Sunday afternoon and gave us a good shove. The Mercedes had its nose broken, cooler leaking and the fenders poking out over the front wheels. With my 244, the rear fog light was mounted that was held by an angled piece of sheet metal had bent up. Fixing the damage took one touch. I then towed the 190 to the next open fuel station from where the owner could call for assistance and wished him well.
The friend I mentioned owned a Volvo 264 that got hit by a BMW 5er of the E34 series. Hefty impact. He was looking forward to getting some insurance money and went to a car body specialist for damage evaluation where the BMW happened to have ended up as well. The boss of the company took a good long look at the Volvo and told my friend to stop pulling his leg, this car had no accident damage. "Yes, I was in an accident, with that BMW there actually!" he said and pointed at the beamer that had been shortened by 10cm/4 inches in the nose by the impact.
    The boss dropped his jaw.
One can't overstate the brilliance and care Volvo put into the designs of the rear wheel driven cars back then. F*** Mercedes, Volvo were THE BEST! The 850/V70 is the last family of Volvos really following their old design philosophy. Ford bought Volvo to get access to the technology and based the majority of their designs of the Nineties on Volvo's P2 platform. At the same time, Ford f***ed up many of Volvo's brilliant customer services and basically left Volvo behind robbed.
Taking the p**s with customers like with the S80 where there were features like cruise controls built into all cars and charging what would have roughly been a grand in US Dollars for the levers to access them would not have happened under Swedish management!
The company did its best to get back to its old splendour, but I can't acquaint myself to the mobile iPhones their cars have become.
I later owned two 740s which are brilliant cars as well, rock solid, but the calipers of the front brakes by Lucas are a pain in the rear, cause loads of issues with sticking brakes due to torn dust protection caps. You also feel the added 300 Kilos of empty weight which isn't too nice.
I also owned 2 Volvo 340s and an uncle of mine one 340 with the Variomatic constant speed transmission. One of mine had an LPG conversion which was nice and gave the car a range of nearly 1600Km/1000miles from its two tanks but ultimately ruined the engine, the other was a very generic four speed manual shifter from 1982 which I loved to bits. Superb turning radius and practicality and really good economy for a car of its year of make. The four speed transmission fit the engine perfectly. Also a great car on snow and black ice. A lot of fun to drive when other drivers just panicked! 😁
The prices for Volvos of the era I prefer have gone through the roof and what's available with my budget doesn't inspire my interest as much, so I no longer own a Volvo.
I now own an old Renault Mégane convertible, the first non-Volvo I actually bought. And I love it! 🤩😍 …and as the Volvo 440 and Renault R19 basically were the same cars and my Mégane is the successor of the R19, I kind of still have a Volvo-ish car, just with an accent and a little more je ne sais quoi. ☺

I’m restoring an old 1979 Volvo 245 with my dad. Father daughter thing😊. My next daily driver. My dad used to work at Volvo Helmond, Netherlands. As a rookie they asked him to get the whole Volvo 480 development and production line from Sweden to Helmond. They sort of laughed at him, wet behind his ears… so my dad went back to Helmond, rented about 30 trucks, drove to Sweden and loaded the whole thing up😆. The 480 was one of the first with a crntral computer and always something wrong with them. He was involved in making the first concepts of the V40. The V40 concept car he literally worked on. Getting all the plate work shipped and made, total secrecy. Love those stories. I grew up in volvo’s. In love with the early 240 wagons. 200.000 km means they are just about beyond brand new😊. But my dad’s 945 is also soooo good… Also love his 1967 Amazon wagon. Drive it now and then. He used to tour all through Europe on his business trips in this one. Restored it 37 years ago. Still as new. Nothing beats a Volvo!

"Everyone knows if you own a Nokia phone and a Volvo, you're basically immortal"... I gave you a thumbs up, sorry to quote you on this Fridolf, but it is so true. My father had the big 850 sedan. It was so luxurious and nice. And somebody not awake ran into his back at some point (people where going to work and after a rounabout, my father had to stop because just after taht somebody had to turn left). He got hit so hard by I think it was a Honda that he was "pushed" to hit the car in front of him (he hit the brakes because he could see that car coming really fast behing him in the rear mirrors, so it could have been worst for the front car). The guy with the Honda reallized at the last moment and breaked really hard so his "nose" "dove" so that his front bumper was under my father's rear end bumper. Needles to say, the Honda had a "total damage (it looked really like it had been in a really big crash)" and the car in the front was quite damaged to. My father's Volvo had scratches on the front and rear bumper, they changed them just because of the little esteticall details on them (scratched etc, but other than that, nothing)

From the thumbnail I thought it was a Volvo 480 ES, but the sleak pointy front was the result of a few crashes. The 850 is quite a car and basically did what the 480 was supposed to do, get rid of Volvo's boring image, a market survey had shown that 95% of Volvo drivers wore white underpants. Because of it's powerful and nice sounding engines and handling it didn't just make Volvo's cool, it made the wagon, 'the dog house' cool for the first time in European automotive history. It also made the boxy shape of previous Volvo's cool retroactively. So it was quite an influential car.
It's actually not that roomy allthough the boot is very usable, it's not that heavy either. It's not only sturdy but also reliable and very, very durable. A friend of mine bought one around 97 second hand with over 100k as his first car, he sold it 2 years ago. Not because it failed but because expensive maintenance was coming, exceeding it's value. They are very cheap because they are thirsty and expensive in road tax, and are the go to car for people who partake in one of these cheap car rallys across Europe.

The small blue hatchback that he crashed from the side is a 1st gen Peugeot 106. I had one in a sporty version a ‘93 1.4 xsi. You wouldn’t want to crash with that car, it is very light and very unsafe. But it is one on the most fun to drive cars in sport versions xsi and the rallye. In Europe they are one of the most common rally and hillclimb cars in the small displacement categories. Mine had 100hp and weighed 850 kg/ 1870 pounds, the next gen with 1,6 16v had 120hp and in racing they made over 200hp. Imagine even Sebastian Loeb started his career with a 106 xsi. In tight corners is crazy how fast it can go, it has a liftoff oversteer character that makes it exciting and dangerous. In a old top gear episode for the best drivers car it took the 2nd place behind a Ferrari 550 maranelo , had the same g forces on a corner and breaking distance as a 911 of its era

While it was funded in the 1920s and produce trucks to this day, its not really the same company.
During the 60s, 70s and 80s Volvo bought up loads of equpment manufactures.
In the late 80s the tractor production was sold to finland. Around year 2000 the car production was sold to USA (that later sold it to china), and a few years later Volvo construction equpment was branched of as a separate company.
Volvo as the company that makes everything have sort of never existed. In 80s the sold of the tractor production but in the 90s they bought the excavator production.
The same is sort of true for saab also, but people don't think of it that way because the trucks when saab owned them was always named Scania.
Saab always made aircraft that was there original gig. But stuff like submarines they started to make very recently.

It's not saab that build submaries, it's kockums that's part of the saab ab group.

As a swedish person, it feels kinda funky that US consider Volvo "Luxurious" here in Sweden, they are everywhere, some people drive Volvos from the 1980s still. Belive most common model is the Volvo V70 wagon.

And this is the reason, we call them tanks here in Finland.
A few years ago, I accidentally rear ended a Volvo v70 with my Toyota yaris on icy road. Front of my car caved in about 20cm and it was damn miracle that my airback didn't deploy (2 inches to left and it would have). And best thing about that? That damn volvo had hitch knob which absorbed all the damage and it didn't even have any scratches on it's rear bumber. All they had to do was replace one of their parking sensors...
My speed at the time was only about 30kmh (about 18mph)

I'm driving Volvo S40 turbo from 2000. Funniest part is that in many other cars you pay extra for non-basic color (usually basics are silver, gold, black, white, red, blue) but many Volvos have very different basic colors. It's very common to see Volvo as a mint green, baby blue and possibly in other not so common colors. Mine is yellow and super easy to find in big parking areas. The first car I drove was Volvo 850 wagon and those are pretty cheap nowadays (in Finland atleast) but finding one that hasn't been driven over 400 000 km is rare.

There is an official Volvo channel on CZcams that shows the results of accidents involving a Volvo. Their tagline is "Volvo - for life". A couple of memorable ones are an XC90 that had been hit head on by an articulated truck crossing the central line (the driver having fallen asleep), the whole of the Volvo's engine compartment was concertina'd but the passenger compartment was largely untouched. Nobody who's had an accident in an XC90 (in Britain at least) has ever been killed. Another memorable video involved a Volvo Estate (Brake) and a Fiat Cinquecento. It wasn't clear if the Volvo had reversed into the Fiat or the Fiat had driven into the back of the Volvo, but the whole of the Fiat's engine bay was wrecked. And the Volvo? The rear bumper probably needed a good polishing. I myself drive a Volvo S60. Volvo - for life! There was an episode of Top Gear in the early 2,000's where they did unspeakable things to a Toyota Hilux pick-up. Their reasoning was the number of wars and conflicts in the Middle East where there was an apparent abundance of Hilux's driving around with a gun mounted on the back. They subjected it to a number of 'trials' each one more destructive than the last, and attempted to start the car afterwards (even if it needed a little work doing on the engine) and then drive it away. The car became legendary and occupied a permanent spot on the TG set.

Remember growing up my Mum were driving us to school and hit some compact in a accident. The compact was written off, the Volvo...we had to replace the front bulb and reattach the bumper.

You could buy one in Europe where they drive on the right and have it shipped over, don't forget though that parts will be hard to come by in the US. Thanks for the video.

I saw you became a dad not too long ago. When I became a dad I planned on getting a 850 station wagon, because I wanted something safe when driving with my little kid but still fun to drive, easy and accessible to build on, put body kit and a huge turbo etc etc lol. My grandpa had a 850 GTR model. And yes I live in Sweden

There's a reason why it is a common joke here in sweden to call Volvo 740s and 850s "Civilt Stridsfordon 740/850" (Civilian combat vechicle). Those cars just run and run and run.

Volvo's are great for towing, very safe. My father had an old 240 Estate and was towing a Caravan. Coming back to Devon from Scotland where they had been on holiday, they got on to the M5 (Motorway) Just outside Birmingham there used to be a section which had an adverse camber on the corner. Known as a blackspot for lorries and trailers. He hit the corner too fast and the Caravan snaked and rolled over, totalling the caravan., he just pulled over in the car. The Police who attended told him that he was lucky he was driving a Volvo. They said any other car and the car would have rolled too. They had seen so many crashes there, some fatal. The old 240 was built like a tank and so stable. That would be an interesting video, seeing an 850 take its chances against an old 240

At first I thought that it would be very usefull if after an accident your car would still run so you could drive to the next hospital. But after a few scenes it didn't look like the driver needed a hospital at all.

I had a Lady drive straight into the passenger side of my 850 on an intersection. Her Opel Zafira Minivan was wasted while I could still open the doors on that side.
    Been driving 850 ever since
