    The launch of ARTEMIS I is a great achievement by NASA more than 50 years after the launch of the APPOLO program.
    I am already looking forward to the next ARTEMIS II and III launches and the astronauts landing on the surface of the moon.
    I'm keeping my fingers crossed for NASA to see the program through to the end with phenomenal success.

      @Simon Gray it's actually impressive how you managed to display a complete lack of knowledge in such a short paragraph without saying you know nothing. I'm going to dissect this.
      1. They don't just choose whatever time they want to launch rockets. The fact that it was 1:00 A.M. has nothing to do with failure.
      2. Why are you "surprised" it didn't fail? The rockets never failed before, just scrubbed launches. If it did fail, it's not like it would be expected
      3. SpaceX is years away from anything to this scale. You said it yourself. "SpaceX is the future." Well, too bad, it's the present right now.
      4. Old doesn't mean bad. SpaceX completely depends on NASA. If NASA goes, SpaceX will be stranded and will fall behind. NASA, however, does not rely on SpaceX

      @Mende Laskovski the LEM (Lunar excursion module), first decoupled from the CSM (Command-Service Module) it then slows down using a hypergolic engine. 3 of the landing legs have small rods that stick out below (around a metre, I think). When these rods contact the ground, a light shines inside the LEM. This is why you hear them say "contact light." This light helps them know when they are near the ground. To ascend, the upper stage decouples, leaving the lower stage of the LEM on the moon. The upper stage uses a fixed thrust hypergolic engine. It them couples with the CSM, and the astronauts transfer into the command module. The LEM is decoupled and left in a lunar orbit. The CSM fires its engine to exit lunar orbit and place it on a return trajectory to earth. Once near the re-entry interface, the SM decouples from the CM, which points its heat shield towards retrograde for re-entry. There is a blackout period for several minutes during which the atmosphere deaccelerates the CM, and it deploys drogue shoots to slow down more before deploying main shoots. It splashes down in the ocean, where it inflates a device to keep it floating. The astronauts and CM are recovered safely.

      The propellant is liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen

    • @damianousley8833
      @damianousley8833 Před rokem +1

      The amount of energy needed to refrigerate and liquefy the hydrogen is considerable. Also most commercial hydrogen is made from Methane as it requires less energy. So " green rocket " is not an accurate description for the liquid hydrogen and oxygen used in the rocket booster. Very little solar or wind power was utilised in generating and liquifing the fuel and oxidiser. You need coal fired or nuclear power stations to continuously provide the power need to generate and liquefy the hydrogen fuel and oxidiser. Even the booster utilise a solid fuel with powdered aluminium a high energy input metal. The Japanese space agency, H1 boosters and the European space agency Ariane boosters have a liquid hydrogen and oxygen main first stage with solid fuel boosters. The second and third stages in the Apollo Saturn fives were liquid hydrogen and oxygen with a kerosine liquid oxygen first stage. In fact liquid methane as a rocket fuel is much easier to store, handle and seal from a leak prevention point of view.

    • @damianousley8833
      @damianousley8833 Před rokem

      I noticed the burnout flame in the background was colourised to a orange red flame. Hydrogen burns with a colourless or clear flame emitting light in the blue ultraviolet part of the spectrum. They have colourised the flame so that birds don't fly blindly into the flame and instantly incinerated. The first hydrogen bomb test in the 1950's had a similar burnoff of waste hydrogen gas from liquid hydrogen which was used to refrigerate the Liquid deuterium, which incinerated sea birds when they flew directly into the flame.

    I'm disappointed in NASA. I remember the glory days of Saturn/Apollo. And yet, for all the money that has been spent on this rocket before it flies, so many problems and so many errors. And then, when the show does go off, we still get animation. We got that back in the late 60s/early 70s. You would think you could attach cameras to watch various stages of flight. Or, at least open the channels to watch the flight if so equipped. I'm a big NASA proponent, but the amount of money spent for what is going on is totally absence. And, they don't even have an LEM module attached. They have to send a spacex unit up to land on the moon.
    At the very least, you could provide cameras on the Artemis so we can see the value of your work.
