  • I put this how-to video together showing the installation of an aftermarket tailgate lock for my 2014 GMC Sierra truck. The installation is the same for the Chevrolet Silverado.

This is a great video. Important note though to those doing this at home...there are TWO solid grey wires in that bundle. The one you are looking for is the same gauge of cable as the pop & lock wires, as is the brown/yellow.

Just did this today and your comment was helpful. I tried the gray wire that was smaller first. Didn't work. The one that worked is more of a blue-ish gray and that one worked. I think the guy who did the instructions was a little color blind...

Thanks for the explanation on the installation. I have a tailgate with no lock and we have the hose clamp theft deterrent method. This was a quick fix while on the road.
You can leave your tailgate down (long loads laying over tailgate) and still prevent it from being stolen for as little as a dollar & 5 minutes of your time.
All you need is a simple 2" hose clamp (worm drive). Put it around the slotted hinge cup on the passenger side tailgate hinge only. Also I recommend you put it on backwards so that the screw is facing forward. Then just before getting it completely tight, roll it 90 degrees forward so that when the tailgate is closed the screw is facing downward. Close the tailgate, crawl under the truck & finish tightening it from underneath.
No, this won't stop the really determined thief, but to get yours he'll need tools and time. Most likely he'll leave yours and go on to easier pickings.

For my 2015 chevy Silverado 2500HD the part # is PL8140 from Amazon. Also I've found 4 brown and yellow wires in that bundle, the right one is the thicker one. There are also 2-3 gray wires as well, the correct one I've found it on the bottom of that bundle towards the center of the truck. Connect the green to the brown/yellow and blue to gray (I've solder my wires)

Just ordered this setup for my 2014 SLT. Your video convinced me. My lock cylinder is does not work though. I just bought the truck so I think my key is just wrong. But I will just remove the tang from the cylinder so it will only work with pop n lock and the fob.😣

Great video! Question, does the manual lock cylinder still work? I’m just curious in case the actuator does again would you still be able to get the tailgate to open manually? I have a bakflip cover so I don’t want to have to mess anything up to replace a broken part if it stops working while it is locked...
    Cheers!
Ps I don’t have a manual lock right now but if I need to order one as a backup plan I will.

I watch your video and read the direction. Following both to the T and when I finished my door locks didn’t work. So I disconnected the quick plugs in the tailgate and they work again. But the pop lock never did. I supplied the actuator with a ground and power and it works well just not when it’s connected to the brown/yellow wire (big or small one). Got any advice Milkcrate82?

I put this on my 2015 F150. Kept the thieves from getting to it without damaging my vehicle. They always move on in Detroit if they can’t get to one, or alternatively strip the vehicle down to the frame. They offer the locks on the 2018 and up F150’s.

Awesome video. I watched this before installing on my 2015 GMC Sierra yesterday and had it on my laptop out there with me during install.
The good news: Install went great first try (i'm sure in big part due to watch this video)
The bad news: I am having the EXACT same issue as you (around the 12 min mark on your video) where it unlocks fine but the electronic lock is not pushing it all the way to the lock position. Its as if the actuator does not travel far enough on the lock motion. I bought it via amazon and will be contacting pop and lock today. I'd be curious if theres some sort of range adjustment that can be adjusted on the actuator or if not will have them send me a new one (hopefully won't be a PIA and take 4 months like for you). Any tips would be great. I'd prefer to get it fix vs returning it due to the time i spent installing and dealing with it so far. Will see how Pop and Lock's customer svc is. Hoping for the best but we'll see...
    ps. Is yours still working??

Just following up on this comment. I spoke with Pop and Lock technical support. The are fully covering the issue (sending me a replacement accuator) 100% standing behind their product and I gotta say extremely impressed with their tech support (Amber is Awesome!) and the customer support in general. They confirmed that if I have any issues after swapping the replacement actuator they will see it through to the end. They are aware I did not purchase this directly through them but via Amazon and are still standing behind it. It's shipping to me today, 1 day after my call to them. Kudos to Pop and Lock customer service and standing behind there product!

They also sell a lock on Amazon that fits on tail gate to prevent theft so it can't be removed. It's a shame it took so long to receive new part, I mean Come on companies!

John Kelbe Pace Edwards builds much better remote locks than Pop and Lock. Pop and Locks work fine in warm climates but if your in cold climates I don’t recommend Pop and Lock.

Why not just spend a few dollars on a hose clamp and put it on the passenger side where the notch is for the tail gate to come off. How many people trying to steal it are going to bring a nut driver and be willing to take the extra time and possible get caught cause it will take twice as long

K Swervo one time I was loading up bicycles in my truck on a hot day. I wanted to have my truck on to let the A/C start up and let my girlfriend sit and relax. As I started to get the bikes, I realized I had the tailgate locked and I had to turn my truck off just to unlock the tailgate. It’s a small little feature that would be useful to have I guess. I could have simply pressed the unlock button on the door and never turned my truck off but my truck didn’t come with that feature and I wish it did.
