  • Buffets are great when you’re hungry and are in the mood for a little bit of everything, but you have to make sure you eat at a good, sanitary buffet. After all, the customers are all touching the same tongs, and no one really knows how long some of the food has been sitting out. However, there are some ways to tell what kind of buffet you’re at. From the extremely necessary sneeze guards to the number of employees you see walking around, let’s take a look at some signs which will help you tell if you’re at a bad buffet.

Way back when sneeze guards had just been mandated, a friend of mine and I were dining at a buffet and he needed to sneeze so he leaned over and sneezed toward the floor between us. This crusty waitress yelled at him, "We spent $500 on these damn sneeze guards so get up and sneeze on them." I love waitresses like that.

If it looks bad or smells funky, don't eat it. The best way to tell if the buffet is good if there's plenty of steam coming out of them steam tables and keeping everything hot. When serving yourself an item dig to the bottom where it's the hottest. Never got sick at a buffet but I got sick at a restaurant one time because they gave me bad tartar sauce, be careful with anything that has mayonnaise in it. Food poisoning is no joke , it makes you feel horrible. Best wishes to all.

I've worked in many restaurants before, and all I can say is Never go with the fish (unless fish is the specialty). As for buffets, not all are bad. The one I worked at for two years was great on some days, and bad the other days. It all depends on the staff. Most Saturday nights everything was clean and stocked, Sunday mornings were terrible, nothing was being stocked, everything was over cooked, but as soon as midshift and night shift got in, we fixed everything right up. It all depends on the staff

    1. Skin over gravy, pudding, etc

    3. Blotchy white guys sneezing over the sneeze guard
    4. Unruly kids standing over the food pointing at things they want while touching the food with their little dirty fingers(I love kids not their germs)
    5. Staff pushing old food to the back of the pan and putting the new food in the same pan and then putting old food back on top instead of swapping out the pan altogether.
    6. Fish that looks like it's hard like a rock
    7. Staff not replacing food fast enough
    8. Staff that stares at you with an attitude as you're dishing up your food
    9. Food dropped on and around the pans and not cleaned up fast enough
    10. Staff packing up food in personal containers in front of customers or chewing as they work.

Try eating at a buffet on a cruise ship when there’s been a disease alert on a recent cruise ship from the same port. They spray your hands with disinfectant before you enter the dining area and watch while you rub your hands together. Then you carry your plate up to the buffet and tell them what you want and they dish it out for you. You’re not allowed to use the tongs or pick up a sugar packet or touch anything. I got yelled at for picking up a box of cereal because no one was standing there. Mashed would’ve have approved. When the all clear was given, it was strange to do things for myself. But no one on my ship had stomach related illnesses!

in my 54 years on this planet, I don't recall ever getting food poisoning at a buffet or any restaurant. I've had lousy low quality food that I didn't want to have more than one serving of sure. I grew up in the restaurant biz, and in later life ran food and beverage operations. my standards were always high, never had poisoning outbreak and no one sick to my knowledge. I wonder sometimes when I hear individuals complaining time and again about every place making them sick that it's really most!y am problem with their own digestive process and general health. of course food poisoning does happen, I just think it's fairly rare in truth and more to do with compromised health and other cross contamination not really due to the restaurant.

I actually went to a culinary school that went over business management as well. They prepared us for buffets. One of the major things about buffets is that they tend to place the items from the cheapest from the most expensive. Hence why buffets usually start off with salad or cheaper items and then go to the most expensive things, like meats and desserts.

I remember when Golden Corral 1st came out, they were unbelievably delicious and a lot of fun but now it's like a convenience store/gas station buffet Lol. Most fast food joints and restaurants used to be Delicious way back in the 1970's but now all restaurants have gone down the toilet. You have to pay a BIG bill at a nice restaurant if you want a decent plate of food nowadays. I actually still remember as a kid when Burger King, Subway and Pizza Hut was very good quality food in the early 70's. I remember when Subway made your subs fresh, made-to-order. The man at Subway sliced the meat fresh right in front of you from a meat slicer and Burger King actually tossed your hamburger meat on a real fire flame grill. Anyone remember when Pizza Hut's pizza cheese actually used to stretch out about 6-8 inches? Nowadays they put Trisodium Phosphate in your breakfast cereal and no one cares. They don't even hide the poisons they put in your food now bec they know people are so dumb down from the media & internet. You can google all the poisons they put in your food and the food companies won't even deny it. Lol. They know you are SO goddamn stupid you'll just eat it with a smile anyways. Lol.

Last Sunday, we ate at Pizza Hut in a small Nebraska town. The staff encouraged us to have the buffet. That was a terrible mistake. I decided on the "healthy" option of just building a salad. The cauliflower turned out to be moldy, the lettuce was wilted, Since the salad ingredients were spare, I thought a slice of pizza would be a good way to fill me up. There were few selections worth considering. There was plenty of dessert pizza (which is meh to me) and a big bowl of chocolate pudding. There is always chocolate pudding at Pizza Huts.
I've sworn off the buffet at Pizza Hut. I like their to order pizzas, so they will be the only selections from now on.

I work at a buffet and although we try to (most of us) keep everything clean and all that, there’s so many instances where people drop the germ filled tongs or large spoons into the food and and employee takes it out, doesn’t replace it, and all those germs are then in the food. Sooo gross, or when people skip using the spoon or tong and instead use their hand (usually touching the surrounding food as well).

I heard a couple of customers complain about the food not being replaced and they still didn’t do anything about it! There was also food spilled on the floor and no one came to clean it up and when I got my lemonade there was soap bubbles that formed on top (my guess was that they didn’t wash the cup out good enough)

    Other hints:
    1) if no steam coming from around the serving pan or your first bite of food isn't hot, DON'T EAT! Food isn't at proper temperature to be safe to eat. You're risking food poisoning.
    2) piling new food on top of old instead of changing out the whole pan.
    3) more food spillage around the containers and counters that is old/crusty. Also, bits of food from other containers in wrong containers (most often from people using the same utensil from one container to another).

I am sure that people have gotten sick from eating "old" food on buffets. I am also sure that I have never seen a sign such as, "this food was placed on the buffet at X:XX oclock". You are implying that everything on the buffet is a potential hazard if you are worried about when it was put out. I guess the only sure way to know is to get there at opening time and you will have an idea. You still will not know how long it sat in the kitchen. Better to leave buffets alone if you are of that mind set, I am not.

There are two rows of food bins, and I cannot reach the rear row at all, and reaching the front row requires that I bend my knees and contort my arm. I am not short or fat either. I have long skinny arms. I wish that instead of being one-piece, that most sneeze guards had adjustment knobs to control the pitch of the "roof" and its height above the table. Then restaurants could adjust them to be more comfortable.

He saw (in no particular order) lice flying around, various "critters" crawling over crates of vegetables, pails used a toilets, rats and mice (dead and alive), even a dead cat. They are bastardized today because the original smorgasboard (in my region) had servers to stop the disgusting people from taking too much, and they kept the area clean. The idea was to give the customer many choices of food, not all you can eat. The last buffet I went to I enjoyed was the Hyatt Regency Savannah, GA for Sunday brunch. They had servers for each section, and should you desire more, you must procure an unused plate. As a matter of fact, I would go to that hotel at every opportunity. Another favorite is the East Bay Inn off of River Street. In the morning they have a small serving area with food cook in the inn (usually consisting of American biscuits with sausage or bacon and coffee and juice. In the evening there is hor dourves with wine or other beverages. The suite had a front living room, large bathroom, dinette, with a rear bedroom and an upstairs bedroom with a sitting area and personal TV. In the morning It's wonderful to watch the ships moving up the river. There is a difference between a Buffet and a hog caller slop hole.

Also, in some (well most) states, the sanitation rules are set by the county, some of which, could be following the food code from 40 or 50 years ago
