As a result of the Nooksack River flooding and water washing away underneath railroad tracks, multiple train cars derailed and fell off the tracks in Sumas, WA. This was a result of historic flooding in the Pacific Northwest of Washington State. Sumas is a border town that sits just south of Abbottsford, British Columbia.
The package includes oil cars, lumber cars, and other train cars that fell over or were damaged as the tracks buckled from flooding over 10 feet deep.
You really need to mention here that this wasn't a moving train. The cars you see on their sides were just parked in the yard when the tracks were washed away under them.
@Larry Butler Yes, they would. You can clearly see at 0:29 that flooding has removed the ground under a roughly 20ft section of track, across a width of at least two tracks and to a depth of several feet. The issue is not the track -- it's that the ground has been washed away under the track. No track can cope with being turned into a bridge like that. At 0:29 you can also see that the wooden ties are in perfect condition and are still firmly attached to the rails. Concrete ties would not have helped anything. The rails have not separated from one another, so continuous welded rail would not have helped anything.
I guess "400mph" was an exaggeration but, just to be clear, nothing in Europe runs faster than 220mph. The Italian Frecciarossa trains are certified to run at up to 250mph but no track in Italy is certified for more than 190mph. In any case, this isn't really a relevant comparison. Most lines in the US are built to carry heavy freight trains at 25-50mph, not light passenger trains at 200+mph. That's a completely different problem. Could the line have been engineered to avoid washing out in this storm? Probably, but why would you do that? It's simply not economically viable to engineer all your infrastructure to withstand extremely rare events. There comes a point where it makes more sense to just say, "OK, this line will wash out once every 50 years", rather than trying to make it withstand every conceivable weather event.
@@beeble2003 Excellent, knowledgeable explanation & response, Thank you!
@@manicboy76 Me too, changed my view 180 degrees. Did lose a lot of drama and tragedy to learn the truth. But better overall.
Yes they were there rotting.
Thank you for covering this! Sumas is my family's home country ! This is horrifying it makes me weep and weep for my home country , now far away. THE TRAIN!!!!
I railfan here at least once a month. So bizarre and surreal to see the entire yard destroyed. Hope the BNSF can get the crew that works the town's switcher on other assignments until they can repair this line.
Man what a mess, wishing everyone the best over there.
And where u live what state in the usa?
I worked on those tracks back in 2011.
Always nice how memories come flooding back.
This disaster is certainly not from a lack of training.
Your comment derailed quickly
@@NPzed ....but, I was on the right track until you commented!
Why weren't the tracks inspected knowing there has been 'historic' flooding ? Why was there scheduled trains in a flood area ?
Someone dropped the ball....
This wasn't a moving train. The cars were just parked in the yard and they fell over when the tracks washed out under them.
@Larry Butler There's nothing greedy here: you cannot fight that volume of flowing water eroding the ground under the tracks. You can clearly see at 0:29 that the ties are in excellent condition and the rails are still firmly attached to them. Isn't it time we stopped fearmongering?
Was wondering about that myself. Reading the comments I see that it was parked and undermined from the flooding. I live in NC and within the last five years storms have gotten more intense
@Larry Butler This isn't Charleston. The ties in this video are in perfect condition. If other ties are in bad condition, that is a completely separate issue, which has nothing to do with this video, and nothing to do with anything I have said.
cleaning this mess......gonna take a while.
I see supplies, lumber, and oil 🛢 not traveling back and forth for a while. 🙁
Great stuff! Looking forward to your new videos
Thankfully this wasn't a passenger train. I hope the engineer and crew walked away unscathed or at the most with minor injuries.
Well……by the looks of the tanker and hopper cars laying on their sides, it’s safe to assume that it was not a passenger train!
@@Slide164 I would assume also that the lack of passenger cars would be provide a clue as well! 🙄
Based on how the cars were layed out, I'd assume that this happened after the switching crew went home for the night.
There was no engineer or crew. This wasn't a moving train -- just cars parked in the yard that fell over when the track was washed out under them.
@@beeble2003 That's interesting. Thanks for the information. 👍
more supply chain interruptions
One derailed train isn't going to cause supply chain issues
Why is there no coverage of whats going on 30 mins north of this.. Vancouver is cut off from the rest of Canada and part of our busiest highway was washed away by a mudslide
This maybe helpful. I never park my Truck close to or under a large tree during a wind storm. Just saying
Rushing water will take out everything in it's path:( Hope no lives were lost. Thank you for the coverage, tc.
1 life lost and multiple missing in b.c
So true, rushing water is a force of nature, that takes the path of least resistance, this is an example of it's latent power.
@@TheBlazersfan22 I am so sorry, thank you for the reply.
thats an expensive mistake
There's no mistake. The cars were parked in the yard and fell over when the track washed out under them. There's nothing BNSF could reasonably have done -- the only way to stop it would have been to endanger a crew by sending them in to move the cars before the track was destroyed.
@@beeble2003 ah didnt realize it was a yard.
Trains are inherently lazy., and always want their belly rubbed.
We're those trains parked, or moving at the time of derailment?
ouch!
My god, where the hell do you begin to clean up this mess ?
Glad I don't have to clean that up
At least the tankers didn't leak, catch fire and explode
We need more money Joe Biden Time to fix those tracks
They need to get a grant to take care of the train tracks and the town.
What a hisroric tragedy!
What an enormous mess. I don't envy the cleanup crew.
Why push the freight on flooded track. Who made that call?
They weren't pushing freight. These cars were parked in the yard when the floods washed away the ground under them.
@@beeble2003 Nice to know. Probably should have moved them out of the flood zone though.
@@russellparker5272 That would have put a crew in unnecessary danger.
The Infrastructure Bill will cover repair and modernisation of this railway tracks.
These are privately owned railroad lines. The tracks are maintained by BNSF, not the government. Unless they get a grant, the tracks are repaired out of BNSF's pocket.
@@shchorss is this Infrastructure or not?
@@teamtryxgg281 Not government infrastructure. It’s privately owned, as I said.
Joey wants those new high-speed trains with his 'info'structure bill. Heard him talking about it yesterday. 🤔
Insane
😲
Can Canad be stopped!
Hurry up and repair everything so all will be pretty for the next flood ...
Suppose to have an inspection run but I guess they skipped that part
This wasn't a moving train. It was just a cut of cars parked in the yard, which fell over when the track washed out from under them.
infrastructure
Terrible.
That was dumb to take a train through flooded tracks.
They didn't take a train through flooded tracks. This was just a line of cars parked in the yard, which fell over when the tracks washed out under them.
Very light damage ... railroad will be repaired in mere hours ...
So sad but this is all part of the end times scenario, the rapture and the 7year Tribulation are right around the corner. Please give your life to JESUS CHRIST today!!! Read biblical prophecy, listen to Dr. Ron Rhodes on end times chronology.
PS: be resourceful, don't waste anything, there will be shortages coming like never before!

They need a better train bridge.
You mean one that will stand up to catastrophic flooding?
The earth quite literally washed away beneath it
There wasn't supposed to be any bridge. The line was on solid ground until the floods washed out the ground under it.
Well they better use alot of heavy rocks to make a better train track.
@@AlandHite thanks Alan
????? Thought not!!! Now no roads nor tracks???
