The thing I love most about Traktor is Stems and remix decks so I won’t be moving elsewhere but I do wish the Z2 mixer was updated to at least rival the s9 type mixers available.

I ordered an S3 (I’m no pro) earlier I’m the week, and your video makes me think I made the right choice. I don’t need spinning jog wheels or tiny screens, and am perfectly fine with the Traktor software and running off a laptop. Great review! 👍

I have been using Traktor for years. I owned the S4 Mk3 and I love it. My 2 complaints are the mic volume and the crossfader curve adjustment. A rotary knob would be much better than a 3 position switch.

I've been using the S4 MK3 for awhile now. I definitely recommend getting Joe Eastons screen mod for it and do a new review with that. It completely changes the controller and screens I to what NI should have put out.
Just FYI. You can use the S4 MK3 with VDJ if you want. No screens or motorized jogs yet though.

I'm still a relative DJ newbie with a preference for abrupt bpm transitions & genre hopping.
I just did my first mix last week with this thing (and it was live streamed :D). Coming from the desktop Virtual DJ and one mouse button transitions, I completely butchered some of the transitions and pre-cued with the volume up etc. But boy, oh boy, was I having FUN! The fn' EFFECT section, killswitches, post-fader, TT mode, the mixer, the loops, the stems, the remix decks. This thing has completely my blown mind.

I know where you're coming from mate. Thing is when I first started Djing (with vinyl in 1987) I was butchering mixes at weddings, Christmas do's and birthday parties. Yes, it was cringe but it was amazing fun. Only a year or so later I was pumping out some decent transitions. Practice makes perfection my friend so keep going. Even Tiesto and Carl Cox began with crap mixing.

I have been using Traktor for years and love it. I have tried other software but honestly just something I prefer about Traktor. I actually bought the Maschine Jam and loved it and used that also for Dj'ing for some time but am at a lost now the NI no longer supports and it no longer works with Traktor because it has to use "Controller Editor" with mappings. I wish they would actually make a basic mapping for it since many users made them before. But have been considering looking at a Traktor controller or something else since the Maschine Jam is an issue and have scoured the internet and many users have the same issue. It works fine in Maschine but it was perfect for me using it with Traktor and it being a Traktor product I did not envision it would such a headache trying to get it to work once it stopped working, i.e. the Controller Editor for some reason. I have also been truly looking at Denon standalone options, but I personally do like being able to type in a song quickly while dj'ing on a laptop - so not exactly running out to get a standalone.
Thanks for such a great review

Been using Traktor since 2011.. when I got my S4 mk1!... Which I'm still using.. it was either that or the Pioneer DDJ-T1 which when I checked out in the flesh it was like a kids toy and didn't come with the full version of Traktor. Still happy with my decision and I've been happy that 11 years later it's still basically the same design with the mk3.. How many controllers have pioneer released in that time!!! 🤔 P.s. I've actually rolled back to the original S4 software as I'm also still using the dedicated laptop I bought at the same time.. and was getting more and more glitches with every update.. still does what I want it to do 👍🏻😁

I also really like the whole Traktor ecosystem. To me it is also the best bang for your bucks. I only have the S4 MK2 but I have a D2, X1 and an F1. I even have a A10 so I can use my turntables and mixer for DVS. I admit I get jealous when Serato gets new gear but it is never enough for me to try or switch over. Now I've need a DJ for decades and my first DVS was the SL1 when it first can out. I used the SL1 for a long time then recently needed to upgrade because of OS. After reviewing all the different options out there, Traktor was a fit for me and how I wanted to DJ. Been on Traktor for almost two years and haven't regretted it. To me it is a robust DJ platform and I am proud to be using Traktor.

Hey, I love Traktor! I use it on my iPad Pro 12.9”. I liked that the S4 MK3 has the capability of being connected to iPads instead of the laptop. That would be great selling point, because a iPad can have a lot of music as well. I still use a Denon MC-6000 Mk1. It works wonderfully with Traktor 3. Keep making videos, this was very informative for Traktor users. A lot of people sleep on Traktor. But when it comes down to it, music played clearly and mixed well is what people your entertaining care about. If your gear is solid and skills are good, you can make anything work well.

I'm 100% with you when it comes to the rotating jog wheels and my reasoning is due to no stop option on the track as you switch to the next song. It looks cool somehow but the rotating lights on the wheels itself it looks great. And yes I started with Traktor S2 and still have it, I still have my Traktor S4 MK1 and I use them as back up or small events and my S4 MK3 for weddings or bigger events. Great video!💫👍

I love what Traktor does making their software now able to use Serato controllers I also have hid mode for cdjs and im able to use turntables when ever someone has it at a venue.. if they could work with all the dj controllers and make them 100% fully integrated that would be a big win because sometimes someone brings a giant Serato controller to a gig and plugs in. or sometimes someone has a DJM 900 SRT which I hate since it doesn't work at all

    Late to this party.....
I have (&had) the exact same beef with the S4Mk3.
I'm waiting for Traktor to come with the update that lets you get to use stems without having to buy them..
Would have been amazing if they had gotten more artists to have their stems bought in the first place - or that with any producer pack for remixing stems you could easily make your own... but no.
My real beef is with the software, not the hardware (though the hardware pushes you to look at your screen more than you should)

First of all...great, great video. I'm with you on every point.
Now as a person who's looking for a new professional controller, I had my sights set on the DDJ 1000, but then!...then I looked at the 1000's output...24-bit at 44k. REALLY? Oh, HELL no.
Now I'm back in the Tracktor camp 24-bit at 96k. THAT is professional sound. As a previous owner of a S3, I know it's going to sound great.
So, unless you have a better recommendation at this point, I'm probably getting the S4 Mk3 (and turn off the platters as you do heh heh).

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq Před 2 lety +1

Unless you have real 24/96 files, you can't get 24/96 resolution. What they don't tell you about upsampling, is that you can't get more than what you started out with. For example, if you play an MP-3 that's upsampled to 24/96, non musical information is added to the file to increase its size. The MP-3 is made to look like a 24/96 file in order to trick the music player into playing the file. But you still have MP-3 quality sound. That's what lossy compression means, and that's also why you have to be careful when buying music. Some sellers transcode a file to a higher resolution in order to charge more for it.
With regards to 24/96 playback, assuming the files are real, the dac chip only does so much. Most of what makes a digitally based product sound good, is the quality and design of the analog portion of the component. That's where all of your sound quality comes from.

I bought the S4 for being the S4, even though I was a Serato user at the time, the value of the S4 was superior to anything else at the time. Now when streaming is released, I’m completely satisfied with it, and won’t trade it for another controller. Albeit I’ll probably get some stand-alone unit later on.
I’d urged you to get the screen mod though, it makes the S4 even better.

JoeEastons Screen Hack makes this controller everything it should have been. The hack allows you to customize almost everything about the screens, colors and functions. You can completely close the laptop and use the screens the way they should have been.
It does take some editing of the file provided by Joe Easton, which takes some time and learning. However, it is so worth it to make the controller your own.
If you own this controller, it will be the best $5 you've ever spent.

Eventually after many many hours of use the Hot Cue buttons started to need to be pressed a bit harder than when new, this caused you to sometimes not trigger them when you wanted, which was annoying but apart from that it was a tank, never let me down really.

So I'm just getting started along my DJ journey and I'm looking at the s4 m3. No I would like to believe that one can do anything with anything, meaning using any software or you should be able to work with any genre. I read reviews about Traktor pro 3 and that it's geared toward electronic music. I think that would mean clubs more than other venues. I don't think I'd be going that way; more weddings and other events. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

One question: if I buy S3 now will I have Traktor pro 3? Not the pro 3 plus, but I just would like to have what I got before the Pro 3 plus came out.

hi, well i am a traktor user because of the sound quality and keylock quality. It has everything i need, but the hardware sucks if you are into open format/scratch/mix/drop djing. The keylock qualy is the best, you can scratch with key on and it sounds great, way better than other software. the thing is they are more into electronic type of music and for that all the hardrware that ni has rocks. Well , at the end i made a custom mixer that has pads and all the control i need , but i wish NI make an upgrade to the z2 to compete with pioneer or rane mixers. But i think it will not be the case. I used also a custom s9 mapped to traktor and its very good, but overall the soundquality its no the best, its ok. (s9 its a little old). When i had to play in clubs with cdjs i used hid mode and traktor works fine, but i think im the only one playing at clubs with traktor :(. Maybe in the future they come back to the roots and make some new gear torward the club djs. overall ni sucks, but at the same time they are very good. Hard to explain. :D. Rekordbox its almost convincing me. Serato, i dont like the sound quality and effects. Traktor has the best effects, they sound great at big volumes...sh.....t ill stay with traktor until i can, hoping that there come hardware that is up to the level of traktor.
Btw, you have to test the mixars primo controller...it has everything, long pitch fader, reactive jogs, all the effects, phono input, standalone mode and it accepts innofader. The best small controller of all. well, im done.. i will scracth a little bit to make this awkward feeling about traktor go away :D.

Traktor S4MK3 (got it in 2019) & Maschine MK2 (w custom mapping from dj soundstorm) for on the fly cue point changes (load, loop, fade in/out) and better remix deck control. Totally agree w the mic input being weak ALSO really dislike that i have have to use up one of the 4 decks to use the mic (although now i know you can run the mic thru the AUX channel 🤯, just need to figure out how to map the aux volume)
Moving platters, I barely use it because it behaves as if you’re in relative DVS mode (so no instant cue, etc) wish they could have an option so the platters move but acts as if your in jog mode
    I’m used to / conformable w traktor,
But more and more, Serato is getting appealing with new features (playing well w obs, flexible beatgrids, samples/loops, mic on dedicated channels ) and also what they do for dj culture as a whole
Also got an z2 & x1mk2 +f1 but barely use em since I haven’t been working so might sell em all (or just the x1&f1) to make the move to serato a bit easier or at the very least pay some bills till i get back out to gigs

For me the spinning decks suck mainly because of the lights that move around it (AND BEAT MATCHING SUX IN TRAKTOR!!) There’s no set starting point for where your cue point is. If you’re mixing vinyl, you know where your starting point is because it’s where the needle is on the record. This is a major fail IMO.
They could do something like this… If
9:00 was beat 1 (and the cue point starting position)
    12:00 was beat 2
    3:00 was beat 3
    6:00 was beat 4
or each quarter consisted of a full bar (something like this)… this would make a lot of sense to me also. Having customisable options based around this idea would be so cool and make so much sense, I mean just having the lights flick to the starting position upon loading a new track/cue point would make all the world of difference and make it feel less gimmicky and more refined. They could patch this if they realise it. I’ve been hoping for since the beginning. The other major contributing factor is that manual beat matching still sux in Traktor. It is basically broken. Unless there are some settings that I’ve overlooked… it’s just not the same as vinyl or Cdjs or even the pioneer controllers. Still a massive disappointment that they haven’t fine tuned. I predict if they fix this, Traktor would be 10x more popular.
The screens are a massive waste. I agree 100 percent. Also the waveform is stuck in 1 colour… I’ve been waiting to be able to make it rgb. Wtf?!
Also, it’s probably just me but I’m often confused with the sync and pitch functionality in the software… I haven’t looked to find an answer to why I’ve experienced such annoyances but anyway, it’s been a major pain at times. I can’t remember the exact issues but they definitely have been annoying. I’ve learned to jot mess with it at all. Set and forget.
I would love to see more variety of effects that you can set to the filter knobs… that’s been very annoying. Also if there was a customisable parameter knob to for timing of a delay, reverb etc, that would’ve been awesome and also felt less like a gimmick.
And I’d love to see the main effects unit get a bit of a work over… it’s just in a bad position for me. All the way up the top of the decks… just give us a pioneer style fix unit already!!!
Other than this, I absolutely love this controller.
