I can so see the scene in my head:
Leonard visits Amy in the hospital after the birth of Amy's and Sheldon's first child. Leonard hears the name and gets all sentimental:
"You named him after me?"
Sheldon:"Of course not! I named him after Leonard Nimoy. I wanted him to have the name of someone truly special."

The fact Sheldon quickly and easily drops the "L" word, really says a lot about his emotional growth.
I was confused at first because I thought the “L” word was “Leonard” lol. I was wondering when he had such a hard time saying Leonard.

At first I thought it was out of character but you’re completely right. I do love watching Sheldon grow as a person. Any made him a better one but let him learn on his own.
Makes a lot of sense for him though. He's not a super emotional dude, so he probably doesn't do a lot of the inner searching and questioning that a lot of people do when they realise they love someone.
Logically, there are no other alternatives for what he feels about her. Ergo, love. So...why not just say it.
I don't recall him struggling with it in BBT after realizing it was true. And considering the narration is from _after their son has graduated_ presuming it was at the standard age of 18, and who knows how long they were married before children, they've probably been married for 20+ years at _this_ point
Ok the bit from "Young Sheldon" with Amy interjecting was amazing. That and naming the kid Leonard.
Sometimes, writers really get something just right.
The fact that Sheldon and Amy would both entrust Penny in taking care of their child is so sweet. You can really tell how much they trust her.
I like to think that Sheldon and Amy call their son Leo for short in order to avoid confusion.

Not gonna lie. I totally thought he was named after his long-time roommate Leonard. Then he said Leonard Nimoy, and I'm like..."Oh...duh...".
That was the point. They wanted you to think he named the kid after his best friend but it’s sheldon so he wouldn’t do that. You go “oh, sheldon, that’s so sweet.” “Oh right, of course. Sheldon isn’t that nice” they did it on purpose to make it more funny.
Actually I read somewhere that Sheldon’s son was named after both his roommate Leonard and Leonard Nimoy.

If sheldon admitted it was after Leonard he'd never live it down and he knows it. So he's insisting it's Leonard Nimoy. He's stubborn, nothing new there, and admitting someone's so important to him (other than Amy and presumably his children) isn't a strong point. This is the same man that freaked out when Leonard had a minor nose surgery to the point where he broke his own nose because he walked into glass. He couldn't admit he cared then either, but he definitely does.
