    No mention of colonatus = serfdom? No mention of forced inheritance of profession? You basically ignored what matters the most in these Medievalization reforms.

      Also I think he kind of touched on the problem of coin debasement but didn’t really explain how big the problem and solution was and the “in kind” taxation system that was created out of necessity.

      AFAIK, the greatest problem that hard coin caused was to the market economy both inside the Empire and across its borders with the Germans and other barbarians. Basically a super-austericided economy had no means of exchange anymore.

      It did help it last longer though. Rome came very close to collapsing in the third century but these reforms helped it to survive until the 5th century.

    Diocletian's mistake was to mettle in the market determining fixed prices and wages. Sounds very familiar today with big government meddling with free-markets that often has unintended consequences, or gives bureaucrats corruption opportunity to choose winner and losers with the right price.
