Also, most of the scenes with Bernard Cribbins in the Hotel Inspectors were absolute classics. @rocistone6570 Před 5 lety +10

      Absolutely no hope of that. FT was "Lightning in a bottle." If they tried to do it again, it would pale against the original. If they tried to modernize it, there would be nothing but a comparison to the original. Futile efforts to copy and repeat success time after time has led Television and all of the media, really into the near constant state of mediocrity we see gushing out in rivers every time the TV is switched on. Better to encourage originality, as if the people who run networks these days would ever allow that.

    • @jamesthe-doctor8981
      @jamesthe-doctor8981 Před 5 lety +7

      Yeah, even John Cleese couldn't make comedy like this again. He only did 12 episodes and decided it had run its course. I've always been disappointed that he did so few, but at the same time glad he didn't do so many that it "jumped the shark" like so many of our American sitcoms have done because the creators wanted to milk it for every dollar they could. We all just have to be happy with an even dozen.

    • @edhoughton2609
      @edhoughton2609 Před 5 lety +6

      @@jamesthe-doctor8981 Yes, I agree quality always beats quantity. John Cleese and Connie Booth did actually start writing a third series but they had already exhausted nearly all the comic situations a hotel could offer. I think it was Cleese himself who said that while rehearsing a particular scene for the third series, he, Connie Booth and Prunella Scales just stopped midway through it and looked at each other, realising: "this just isn't funny." So - twelve episodes is all we have, but they are all priceless gems and we have to be happy with that.

    I’ve watched a lot of sitcoms on both sides of the Atlantic - and even accepting differences in taste and delivery of comedy between Americans and the British - for my money this is the best comedy ever. Truly ever. I’ve watched Communication Problems probably 100 times and I still laugh out loud, it’s that good!
    Cleese is terrific and the late Andrew Sachs (Manuel) were among the many highlights of this series. My biggest complaint is that they didn’t make more of the damn episodes, sad that a little separation and divorce prematurely ended one of the best sitcoms ever written and produced. Some of the jokes are outdated today but so much is not (“are you Aw-rally men?”)

    Mrs. Richards was the guest character I hated the most because she was so convincing. There's a blooper clip where Polly gets the line wrong and drops an F bomb. Mrs. Richards begins laughing. I was like wow she was only acting.

      She was in a few things was the lady who plays Mrs Richards, I’m sure she was in one of the rising damp episodes as a mother in law.

      Joan Sanderson was such an underrated comedy actress. She could really turn up the shrew to 11. I did enjoy seeing her come out of character briefly when Connie Booth swore, however. JS would have made a great living imitating Mrs Thatcher, I think.
