- The Grannom Caddis hatch (Brachycentrus spp.) is often considered to be the first major hatch of the spring here in the East, however is one that can be found in many trout streams across the country. This video focuses on the entomology of the grannom caddis and how it relates to fly fishing. We explore the life cycle of this insect, the behavior of each life stage, and tactics you can use to imitate them.
We have always been very interested in entomology and how it relates to fly fishing - we hope that you find this interesting (and also entertaining) as well. If you have any interesting bits of information, please comment below as we are always eager to learn more!

Excellent video - great information, explained clearly and simply. And some nice brownies in the net. Thanks!
I've really been looking forward to this series and the first installment didn't disappoint. Thanks for all the time you put in. This viewer really appreciates it!
X 2 😁
You guys are really setting a new benchmark with this series on hatches. Reminds me of the old Fly Fishing shows on ESPN with Joe Humphreys. Congrats guys.
Great explanation
Great video!
Many times fishing the AuSable River in Michigan, caddis patterns save the day. Thanks much for another terrific video.
We have heard good things about that river! Thank you for watching
thank you
Nice job guys 54-year-old newbie Western PA learned a lot from the video. Can’t wait for the next video keep up the great work
Well done¡
Lots of good info. Had my butt kicked yesterday morning. Couldent pick the right fly. Was a bright sun, and they were hatching sporadically.
Awesome bit on the Caddis fly !
Have you tried fishing the Grannom hatch with unweighted wet flies? I grease all but a few inches of the leader and fish mostly down stream with much success. Also a very small sinking muddler minnow fished down stream and lightly stripped upstream is very effective. The birds of prey, i agree, is good also. Ron, NE Iowa.
Awesome guys and thanks for sharing 👍 👍🎏 🇺🇲
The Vermonter

More to come! Will hopefully have a slate drake video coming soon!
My left ear LOVED this video (headphone users haha). Awesome info man. Love learning more about our states flora and fauna
that was well presented and awesome content! well done.
Outstanding video! Very informative.... I'll definitely be paying closer attention to my redbud tree for newer reasons! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it informative! Thanks for watching!
Very nice job- I've been reading a lot for the past 3 years ( The Bug Book is definitely one) and like you have learned how much more there is to learn! I liked the way you interspersed some action "catching" footage- it definitely helps with my attention span!
Loved the video guys. This was incredible. I really enjoyed how you stuck the fish at 9:07. Cool to see you spot a fish, notice he was mid column and put on an indicator and suspend the fly. That is an area of weakness for me, that I could stand to improve on. You did an incredible job of showcasing the bug, its life cycle, flies that imitate it, and what it looks like in the water and out. You guys should be proud of yourself. Super value in this video. Thanks for sharing!
Also, knowing what you guys know about bugs, what they are feeding on, and how to imitate it, really gives you a leg up on your competition. I wish I knew that kinda stuff!
Wonderful to see you guys out on a Grannom hatch some smooth buttery browns lovely, good to see the flies your using too, & where the fish might be in the water column thanks for sharing, been looking for ward to this.
Thanks for watching Kathy!
Very nice.
I love your videos I live in Washington and if you ever wanna go fishing for nice wild rainbow trout lmk
Awesome video and very informational! Trying to get better with knowing my bugs, got some work to do hahaha. Awesome video and learned a ton! Look forward to the rest of the series
Glad you enjoyed it! Very fun to learn more about the insects we try to imitate
outstanding video and information. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful! Hope to get a few more of these type of videos up this year
As I am watching this video I am tying cdc sulphur duns. I creamed the fish last night
So fun to watch. The slate drake video was awesome too. If I may make a request, could you guys do a video on the Hendrickson hatch?
Great suggestion! I will do my best to get a Hendrickson video in soon although my son is due to be born just as the Hendricksons will be hatching so it may not happen thing year lol. I do promise to do one in the future though! I really appreciate the suggestion!
@@BackyardBassinCongrats!! Baby hatch...haha.
Very very awesome video. Was well educated but also very entertaining. I just bought my first fly rod today actually and spent some good money. I’m struggling but trying to learn basic concepts and so much more. I have a burning passion and would love to learn so much more and would really appreciate your help. If you could reach out to me I’d really appreciate it
Awesome video as always, do you mind sharing the brand and model of chest / back pack you were using? I like it 😁
Really interesting. When are you guys coming back to Montana?
Heading out early July. Just Dan this year. Hoping to get a good backpacking trip with our cousin Nick
Dope vid but I can only hear the narration in my left ear
Yep, weird audio for me too. Some parts were fine, others were silent.
What's the name of the tree?
I’d really like to see yas tie the fly with the pod still attached to it at 6:40
Sure thing! I'll definitely put together a video in the near future with how we tie in the egg at the rear of the abdomen. Should have it out sometime in late March or early April.
