    My dad couldn't afford a new Strat for me in 1968, so we had to get a used Strat -- a 1958 Mary Kay. Still have it.

      Yes, Bluesboynate, I completely agree. In the beginning, CBS kind of went downhill with Fender but since Fender was purchased by their employees, you are getting a better guitar, and I think, better than the old ones. Having an older guitar doesn't mean you have a better guitar, it just means you can find people to pay a lot more for something that you might be able to purchase for cheaper and get the same quality new. Rickenbacker, still making the same guitar, so I agree with you, but I am sure Bonamassa could care less. Some think they are the final say so on things. There is a pal of mine, Mike Lipe, makes incredible guitars. You should check him out. Lipe Guitars.

      To be fair, Joe has freely admitted a lot of his interest in older guitars has to do with the fact that he enjoys them as antiques and pieces of musical history.
      That said, he does also own and play a lot of more modern gear, those just generally aren't the pieces from his collection that draw the most attention compared to the older, rarer stuff.

Same passion for same music and instruments, same lick patterns we affectionate, similar blues feelings and also the way we don't feel very confortable with people unless we're forgetting everything around, playing all the rage out. When I train, I train on Joe's tracks mainly. I love this guy's music and energy.

    Sold Joe two of my guitars and hung out with him at his house, real great guy! I am a younger guy and I use to buy and sell vintage guitars and equipment when I was in my mid teens. He was in love with my truck I was driving too and we talked about cars and I was telling him about my new vette I bought at the time, it was winter and I told him when the weather broke I'd let him take it for a drive.

I don’t know about the reproduction models, but the original Mary Kay Strat is hands down one of the best strat I have ever played in my life. It is not just vintage instruments that are scary to take on a gig. I own a 58 reissue Gibson Custom Shop that I saved up for about four years and traded in all most all the gear I owned to get it. It is a 2014 model but with a price tag of $6110 I cannot make myself take it out! We played the Stacked Pickle last week and we do a cover of Just Got Paid and that guitar is PERFECT for that tune, and my drummer was begging me to bring the 'Paul. Nope. My Epiphone Les Paul + is as good as I got to bring out. But $6k for these guys is nothing. It is all I got!

    • @Grogor1
      @Grogor1 Před 8 lety

      I would love a Les Paul like yours. I play my black '60 Strat and '64 Vibroverb everywhere, watch em like a hawk when i'm off stage. I could use cheaper stuff, but i would know the difference, and that means everything to me. Play that Paul brother!

    • @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335
      @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335 Před 8 lety

      ***** That combo you got isn't nothing to sneeze at either, especially the Vibroverb. I have played with the Custom Shop before and between sets I took it to the bathroom with me. It is fun to play, but the worry takes a lot of the fun out of it. And my bassist had his bass stolen last year from a gig. No, it stays at home. The guitar I do use is covered in beer, sweat, tar, nicotine and that shit we use to generate fog. I would have kittens if my Paul got that filthy!

    • @Grogor1
      @Grogor1 Před 8 lety

      The Strat is worth far more than the amp but ya, i hear you about things being stolen, i've had a mint "62 Bassman and my favourite Strat stolen never to be seen again. I tried reaching out to get them back but to no avail. A friend of mine has an unreal amp and guitar collection like Joe, he plays reissues and a little silver face Princeton on gigs. Seems he would rather just lock em up and keep em that way.

    It's spelled Kaye....and that's not a 50's "Mary Kaye" guitar, because there is no such thing, except for the re-issue. Fender made this series of white with gold hardware, they asked Mary to appear in the ad, Mary played the guitar in a movie (but regularly played a different brand of guitar), but the guitar was never branded as the Mary Kaye until it was re-issued more recently. Being referred to as the Mary Kaye stuck because of that original ad, but Mary herself didn't know her name was used in reference to the guitar until later in her career. :) Beautiful guitar either way.

      According to wiki from fender.com (article is now gone): Only a few were produced in 1956, but the color has been re-introduced to the Fender line after the strong international demand for the Mary Kaye color scheme. A limited Custom Shop series Mary Kaye Tribute Strat was issued in 2005. In 2007 a 57 Reissue Mary Kaye Strat was released for the 50th anniversary of the Stratocaster. The Custom Shop release can be seen in the 2005 Fender Frontline Catalog along with her personal history as interviewed by Fender.

      It is translucient blond not white. If you look close, you can see the wood grain through the finish. I know because I bought it in 1958 when I was 15 years old and sold it to Joe. That's a pic of me when I had it about a year.

    I'm not into his playing, especially his singing. I preferred his younger self. He played in a band called bloodline I believe. Imo he was much better then.

    Why is it called a Mary Kay? Is it because of the gold hardware?

    • @benjaminbrierley1489
      @benjaminbrierley1489 Před 7 lety +1

      Because Mary Kay was a famous singer/guitarist from the 60's

    • @keithwhitehorn5811
      @keithwhitehorn5811 Před 6 lety

      It's Mary Kaye. She was a 50s and 60s performer. The term Mary Kaye is also used for a 50s (maple neck) Strat that has an Ash body with the blonde finish.The blond is translucent , so shows-off the Ash grain well. Gold hardware was a rarity.
