Me: Identifies as a lifelong guitar player...not quite sure if I understand the full pentatonic scale but still spend unhealthy amounts of time looking at gear.
Joe: Professional musician since age 11, has essentially his own rare collection museum...understands the pentatonic scale.

The tendency for players to be jealous of Joe is extremely high. The house seems to be divided. I'm happy for Joe myself. I would collect more Strats & Marshalls myself. But I do love a good LP. I have a SmartWood, and I love, love, Love It!!!!

When I was in high school in the late 70's, Standards sold for 350 and Customs went for 450, give or take. Wish I'd have stashed away a bunch of them...
The old sunburst models were going for ridiculous prices of $5-7K. Nowadays, some of these reissues go for 2-4 times that...
I'm sure 50 years from now, the reissues will be selling in the 6-7 figures also. I don't even want to guess what a real '59 will be selling for and how much will guitars played by Page, Gibbons, and Moore sell for?
Great project Joe, I'll bet whoever winds up with that guitar is gonna love it, I just hope they play it!

A lot of those 70s Gbisons are poorly made. Guitars are meant to be played by players; how can I afford one of these LPs? They're a crazy price for what they are. And the more expensive the guitar, the less it will be played. Sad, really.

7:20 Yep. Greeny is 8lbs 15oz (9lbs if it had a pick guard and it would have been slightly over 9lbs when new) and Skinnerburst being 9lbs 4oz as Joe's favorite les paul he's ever played, it's hilarious how the weight weenie trend has gotten out of hand. I briefly bought into it and purchased a featherweight custom shop LP and it wasn't for me. I've been through hundreds of Les Pauls to find my ideal and it ended up being 9.01lb R9 that I even prefer over a $15k brazilian, old wood boutique 59 replica I owned. In any case, just find a guitar that speaks to you and enjoy it without worrying about guidelines someone made up online.

  • @KennyTaylor_JesusIsLord

This is NOT a critique, but a real question from a bass player that fancies having a 6 string around. After watching the video and reading some comments, I would appreciate some advice. In terms of sound, given the fact that it seems a player adds pedals, amps, speakers, the neck, and last but not least... their unique fingering technic, how much does the weight and body/top material really play in the sound? Or is it mainly play a part in sustain? I did find on my LP purchase, that the guitar burst is significantly darker once it arrived, so it seems like building a custom on-line verses hitting up one of these special stores could cause some heartburn. Also, it seems that the neck plays more of a role of whether I keep a guitar around or not. Thanks for any advice you folks can throw my way.

    • @uriteimwrong7317
      @uriteimwrong7317 Před 6 lety

Kenneth Taylor neck has to be comfortable first otherwise you obviously can’t play it without hurting yourself and you probably would shy away from it if you kept it. The body needs to be comfortable too. If you’re going to be standing and it’s really heavy it might bother you after a few hours. To me, the biggest thing about how an electric sounds are the pick ups. But what amp are you using affects it, pedals and even gauge of the string. But string gauge can be fixed by messing with the bass, mids and treble settings on your amp and a distortion pedal if you’re using one. My first pick would be for sound pick ups. Second make sure you’re comfortable. The wood re: electrics only don’t seem to matter to me as much. Forgot to say depending on the genre of music u play, if your going to be bending strings make sure it doesn’t feel too stiff, so neck length and again string gauge again come into play. You can get a shorter scale like Gibson or tune down or use thinner strings. You play bass so u probably aren’t bending strings like a 6 string guitarist. Blues and rock guys bend a lot. And make sure your actions nice and low. No buzzing. Unless you want to fight with the guitar. But remember your hands may wear out over many years of bending strings etc. you’re a bassist so I’m sure you know a lot of this already. I’m also a year late to this post. Just saw it.

On a electric guitar wood doesn't really matter. Tone comes from pickups, pots, string type and your hands. There are a bunch of videos on CZcams debunking tonewood.

Mister Knight Owl - I'm not saying tapping it is going to give you the best idea of how it will end up sounding, but if you think wood doesn't make much difference, either your ears are failing you or you simply haven't had enough hands-on experience with vintage guitars. Period.
I've played 3 masterfully built Les Pauls with original PAFs and several 50s Les Pauls and they simply don't sound the same. Even my 1960 Gibson Melody Maker sounds almost nothing like the new ones.
Personally, I'd only consider spending this kind of cash if I could source some old-growth mahogany.

Revelry 1969 you cant tell how a peice of wood will resonate until the guitar is finished. Its like putting water in a glass. It will constantly change as you add or subtract liquid, or move the glass. By the time you glue the neck on, CNC for pickups, and electronics, finish and laquers the body, and add string tension, the piece of wood will resonate completely different.

That’s your opinion. I have a 70s custom that is heavy as hell and I actually hate it. I also have a 2016 Standard that has weight relief and I love it. I wonder how many of these people that Love these heavy Les Pauls actually gig with them and hold them for hours every night? Probably not many.

Funny thing about guitar players is they really get stupid with the details of the instrument in terms of materials, years, authenticity, etc.
no one else really cares. Especially the people who want to see you perform.
Perhaps today more so because I can imagine that around 50% of people who come out to watch JB are guitarists themselves but back in the golden era of guitar rock from the 50-80s, most people didn't know and didn't care. They just came to see a show.
That 20-something year old blonde who's at the bar/club who's watching you play (if "kids" even listen to this anymore) doesn't really give a shit about whether your headstock says Epiphone or Gibson, they don't even know or care let alone what year it is. All they know is whether you're good and do you look good while doing it and...are you popular above all. Talent can take a sidestep for that.

No guitar is worth six figures, it's ridiculous. Thee are so many good guitars hanging on walls or on display somewhere; take them out and play them. Guitars are meant to be played. It's great that Slash can afford 70 or 80 Les Pauls, but instead of hoarding them, Joe and Slash and others should give or lend their spares to up-and-coming guitarists. What exactly is the point of owning a dozen or so guitars, all the same make; and don't say they all sound different, pick a few that you think are the best. Giving names to guitars, other than descriptive ones, is pretty silly; sorry BB.
