  • Learning I was an MBTI ENTP personality type changed how I viewed myself and others permanently. Knowing my personality type help me focus on my talents while out sourcing my weaknesses and since has allowed me to grow personally and in business. During a live stream I was asked by an ENTP where should I go, what should I do and thats when I got the idea to do a top 5 careers for ENTP personality type video.
This list is based totally on my own opinion, not hard data, but how I view these career paths and how suited they are for me and people I think are like me. I count down from 5 to 1 ranking the careers in the order I value them. The number one career is for what I aspire to be. I also add roles I have considered or have taken on in my life.
My goals with this video are to potentially inspire the next generation of ENTP's, give counselors some guidance on that to actually advise students, and help ENTP's who are currently searching for answers. I know what it's like to be underwhelmed but a job. To be fired over and over not because you're dumb but just because you don't care for the routine.

As an ENTP I struggled to find what makes me happy in the long run for a long time. Now it's the first time I'm truly happy working as a Tattooer since several years. In general I'm more of the artistic type. Everything about it just suits my personality: I can be spontaneous, creative, don't need a long time to plan ahead, but can also realize big, more refined projects if I want to. I've developed and am still developing my own, abstract, weird style. Additionally I meet a lot of interesting people to confront and can make my time schedule and move appointments however I want and have a lot of free and "me" time, which I can use to work on new interesting projects and topics. Also I can always improve and become better, there's just no limit, but plenty of satisfaction.

    4) happy that you mentioning we not only solution driven and innovative at heart but systematic too because I certainly have been obsessed with learning systems to automating and manage risks in a persons business and give investors fantastic returns on investment with peace of mind.

@Zero Cool Female ENTP here who has studied astrology on & off for 40 years as an amusing hobby. Astrology has multiple branches or schools, one of which is psychological astrology. One of the founders of psychological astrology was none other than Carl Jung, the inspiration for the modern MBTI. In fact Jung who was mentored by Sigmund Freud split with Freud over (among other things) a disagreement about using horoscopes as but one tool to help people figure themselves & their psychological issues out & not just the psychological theories both Freud & Jung created.
Jung took inspiration for his 4 personality types 2 pairs of opposites (Sensing/INtuition, Thinking/Feeling) from the 4 elements of astrology (fire earth air & water), those 4 Jung personality types have thanks to Katharine Cook Briggs & her daughter Isobel Briggs Myers been expanded to include there are 2 more personality measures with 2 opposites (Introvert/Extrovert & Perceiving/Judging) in the MBTI (16 total possible different combinations) while in astrology it's just 3 types (cardinal, fixed or mutable) for each of the 4 classical Greek elements (fire, earth, air & water) which adds up to 12 total signs (Aries (cardinal fire) through Pisces (mutable water)). Astrology gets more complex as each body gets a sign (Sun & Moon, the luminaries, the planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto, increasingly the asteroids like Chiron are studied as are points like the Ascendent, the Midheaven (the sign on the Midheaven is also often an indicator of career!), the Lunar Nodes, etc), there are interactions between the bodies & so on. You can make astrology as simple or as complex in its interpretation as you want which is why there are so many branches or schools of astrological study today and you can chart all this over the progression of time which is something the MBTI doesn't do.
So many astrologers I know are also psychologists & therapists by their primary training, they use many different tools to study modern psychological problems & can advise their clients from both the psychological & astrological perspectives just as Jung set out to do in his life time. They tend to treat the 12 signs & other parts of astrology as archetypes just as the MBTI treats its 16 types as potentially useful archetypes (ENTPs are The Debaters or The Visionaries & so forth).
So there's the connection between the MBTI & astrology: Carl Jung. The astrological way, particularly the psychological astrological way of approaching human problems is not as distant from the MBTI as you might imagine.

Funny enough I almost decided to go to law school but couldn’t afford it so I ended up as a manger in agricultural production- for anyone who wants a mental challenge I highly recommend going into agriculture. Every couple months we change seasons and there’s always new problems to be addressed because much of what we do is based off of Mother Earth. Not many people can navigate and problem solve through all the challenges and time sensitive situations so there’s always jobs! Plus there’s ALWAYS something to learn going into new seasons- PLUS when you get bored just move to a new crop!

This is a great video, especially to those new to MBTI typing and I agree with you 100%. You're doing ENTPs a great service.
I'm an ENTP (full battery Myers-Briggs testing/analysis by a consultant) and my career has settled around working in technical/engineering management after having been an engineer myself. Interestingly, I'm just over the line on the E side and have traits of both an ENTP and INTP. When I asked the consultant what that meant, they indicated that I'm great at playing whatever role is missing on the team - either as a doer or a leader. It really opened my eyes to why I was successful as a manager.
In retirement, I can easily see myself being a consultant and really enjoying the varied nature of new environments, new people and new problems to solve.

Great video! I loved how the careers you talked about were different from the normal ones in these kinds of "best jobs for ENTPs" videos, and you backed them up with very good reasoning, so thank you.
I'm an ENTP highschooler and I'm set on being a journalist, because it has such diversity as a career and I can choose to do any number of jobs and any number of projects, as long as they serve my main purpose of documenting current events and giving that information to the public, something I am very passionate about.
That being said, I know that I tend to wander in my interests and take interest in new things somewhat obsessively for relatively short periods of time, so I take advantage of that by constantly learning new skills and coming up with new ideas. In that way, I'm not limiting myself to one thing, even if I do have a planned career path.
I think it's important, especially for ENTPs, to find any job that allows them some variety. How much variety depends on what's comfortable to them. At least this is my understanding.

If you have a high school newspaper or journalism classes in high school you can take, go ahead & try to get staffed on it to give it a test drive (assuming you haven't already). Also if you go to college (most do) consider writing for a college newspaper even if you don't major in journalism (my college had both an official paper & an alternative one, I was close friends with the person who was the editor of the alternative paper & also an acquaintance of a classmate who was a columnist for the administration sanctioned student paper (he went on to write for TV & is a pretty famous show runner or head writer for many shows, the latest being the reboot of The Dark Crystal for Netflix, there was no journalism major so both people majored in English with a focus on writing).
Journalism has so many options in what you will be covering daily, it's only downside currently is the monetary rewards, but this could change again given how there are problems with both legacy mainstream media & the weirdness that is social media. It definitely won't be boring to be in journalism in these times!

This video and others like it make me (and presumably many others) feel like less of a misfit. A degree in music, military vet, desk covered with books (plumbing, Carl Jung, Feynman) and taking a break from making real estate calls to leads. A recipe for never making much money, but at least life isn't routine--the cardinal sin. Thanks again.

No no you can make lots of money as long as your your efforts are in high money areas. In my opinion the VC role is perfect for an ENTP sitting with a team of entrepreneurs who are all looking to fix things many of which have gaps in their logic and also have that gift of consistency. We can see the gaps and route them on the right track them get distracted by the next team.

I found your you tube channel today.I am happy i did.I can feel a connection to the way you communicate and the way you describe ENTP's ways of dealing with the world.I have worked as a tv/radio journalist/reporter, human recourses professional(selection and recruitment, employee relations, employment contracts etc) also worked in corporate communications(writing articles, social media content, speeches etc).
At some point i tried forex trading through a friend who was an independent trader- that did not go well.
I also tried stock trading-that did not go well either and i also tried online poker- yeah..that did not go well.
I always had the dream of not having to go to work.
Just wanted to have enough money to pursue my many different interests.Unfortuantelty I still hbave to go to work. But i am fortunate to have a wonderful family, enough free time for my hobbies(spearfishing, free diving, cycling, table tennis, swimming, kayaking, reading, writing poetry, travelling etc)
Anyway ..i like your list for ENTP careers.I would love to learn more about the Venture Capitalist career and how do you think i can utilise my experience and skills towards that direction?
Also i did not understand how exactly does a VC make money?
I mean i understand that a VC will find a team or a person or company trying to create a new product or service and potential investors to help the launch of the product or service.
How does the VC make money and from whom ?
    Did you try that career?
    Thanks.

    • @Karl__Pierre
      @Karl__Pierre  Před 4 lety +2

VCs make money from management fees on the fund usually 2-3%. But also own 20-30% if the fund. They raise capital from limited partners. Invest that money in companies. When does companies grow they sell the company and the profits from the sale is how they earn. The 2-3% management fee is just enough for their administration costs and to keep them functioning. The real money is when a portfolio company gets acquired or goes public.
For example early Facebook VC investors buy 10% of Facebook for 2 million. That 10% would be worth 67 billion...with a B lol. So that's what they want. Usually 4-10X is what they get

Great advice for aspects of careers that fit with an ENTP temperament! I will say as an ENTP and an engineer the theoretical fit works from what you described, but working in a company, large or small, can often pull the engineer into many clerical and bureaucratic responsibilities. Everything else you indicated, including the relationship to money was spot on. Will say, in general, entrepreneurship has always been very appealing as long as the operating responsibilities eventually become the purview of a manager other than myself so I can go research the next opportunity and execute on my vision.

    • @Karl__Pierre
      @Karl__Pierre  Před 3 lety +2

Female ENTP here one of my past careers was patent law. If you still want to go to law school, many law schools are looking for non-traditional students, especially people who aren't in their 20s & just out of college. Other career experience is a plus to law school admissions committees.
Patent law in particular is very short on people who can file & understand software / computer patents, both those who represent the inventors as well as examiners in the US Patent & Trademark Office (they are the people who decide whether or not to issue a patent for a particular invention & determine that patent's scope). Many patent law programs have night classes & you can keep doing your day job & take 4 years to get your JD degree rather than 3 years for the full-time law student.
You might want to check around with companies & see if they will pay for you to get a JD if you agree to work for them as a patent attorney (I had several friends in the oil & related businesses who got their law degrees paid for this way). You don't necessarily have to work for the same corporation forever, but you might be able to fulfill your attorney dream in this way.

Ian an Entp and I enjoyed watching you video. It makes all sense to me.
How about being stock / forex trader?
Do you think it could be a good fit for Entp.
Trading is also require a problem solving skill. But once you know the strategy you must be able to follow thru by applying focus and displine.
I found it hard to stay displined for a long time when I was trading.
I found your idea of being a VC à very good idea indeed. I was contemplating being like Warren Buffet. Which is not different from a VC.
Thank you very much for the video. Brilliant.

I am not a fan of forex. I had this conversation yesterday with my cousin. A lot of forex marketers now selling that dream of making major money. With that said trading stocks or forex can be a good career choice. Just know its highly volatile and requires discipline.
VC's are much different than Warren Buffet. Warren invest in business for growth and long term dividends. VC's are investing in early stage companies and fueling the growth for an eventual major payday in the form of a public offering or acquisition.

@@Karl__Pierre thank you very much Karl your quick reply.
I totally agree with you on displine point. And this is like death sentence in trading.
I also agree with your when you said that VC are different from W Buffet Strategy. But as you said creativity is more in demand in VCs than in Warren Buffet model.
Thank you very much for that lead.
I'm an entrepreneur. But yet to make a big break.
Thank you for the VC lead. It is now on the top of my list.

I come here bcs I'm an ENTP project manager which you know, make a Gantt chart timeline & schedule for every role on the project. Before this, my test result usually told me that I'm ENTJ, since my answers show my perception of the urge of timeline & breaking down the target. But I rarely feel relate with it's explanation/parodies. I wonder "is most of project manager are ENTJs? But here I found that ENTP could be anything haha.

ENTP here. I’ve done a few of those career roles. I’m currently trying to break into (tech) Product Management (PM). In watching a lot of other PM’s talk about their careers, one theme I’ve noticed is that almost none of them have “linear” career paths. Also the role is usually described as “cat herding” and well suited for “Jack/Jill of all trades” types since you touch so many parts of the org. It makes me wonder how many existing PMs are ENTPs. My suspicion is that we’re over represented in the field. 🤞

Depends on the test. Infjs and ENTPs pair well as people how they think etc. Except they are opposites in behavior and how they approach decision making. Take a long form test and answer as you are not as you want to be perceived and your results get more accurate

Take the long form test and answer honestly. Could be that you took the test provided by an employer or school so you answered based on how you wanted to be perceived rather than how you are. Or you took a short form exam.

ENTP here who when I was studying & practiced law scored a bit more ENTJ on taking the long form a second time, it's not unheard of to be right on the line for one of the 4 traits (in my case perceiving versus judging is my almost equal strength trait). Earlier when I was studying to be a virologist, I scored a little more ENTP. Retook the test again after my law career & it's more ENTP again
