- The last time Magnus Carlsen lost to player rated around 2500 Elo was back in 2006 when he was just 16 years old. That's 17 years ago! In round 2 of the Qatar Masters Open 2023, Magnus not just lost his game to the 23-year-old Kazakh GM Alisher Suleymenov, but was completely smoked from the board. Check out this game along with the commentary of IM Sagar Shah to understand how exactly a player with a rating of nearly 300 points below Magnus could outwit him so thoroughly.

Never seen such bold and confident sacrifices, against Magnus . He's Truly Commendable ❤
"Magnus first time lost to a 2500 player since 2006" He is really an expert..
Fk ur spoiler
He just doesn’t play them frequently
Lol his is not 2nd lose lol
I never lost to a 2500. Haha
Actually 2400 did looool
Damn. That's the most cold-blooded 2500 I've seen yet.
I wonder how '158' players are participating in this tournament and '74' of them are Indians..
That's brutal🎉
It's an open tournament though. Anyone can participate.
What else Indians can do with so much mind... Somewhere they have to put it 😅
May be bcz if u remove russia, india mit have 50 percent GM IM players
israelis aren't allowed though@@RB-pn6wn
🤣😂🤣
First time someone has so convincingly defeated The Magnus Carlsen, astonishing feat!
He cheated. It's not a feat.
@@TheNuscas prove it.
@@TheNuscasdont be sad. Lose is lose. AS simple as that. No excuse
Every one is having a off -day.Magnus is no exception 😂
@@TheNuscasJealous
That boy is a picture of calmness. I felt he did yoga and not played that complicated chess. Brilliant
Or he cheated. What's more likely?
Indeed especially the opening phase by him was really simple. He simply brought all the pieces into the game before starting any action at all. And when he started to attack he reacted to Carlsens move Ne7.
@@TheNuscasJealous burn inside😂
@@TheNuscasI also kind off find him suspicious.
His reaction time with 98% accuracy is not like a human
Do yoga bring calmness to ur mind... help madi...I want to be composite.
Hi Chessbase India, keep uploading the videos and updates of Qatar Masters, your videos are soo good and I have learnt many things from you and I would love to watch all the updates you post..
One question - Who are you and Amrutha Mam rooting to win the title of Qatar Masters..😊
He even not given time to attack, young talent was unstoppable for Magnus
He is not talent player he is cheating with magnas is so sad
I think the overemphasis on blitz, bullet, and rapid has hurt a lot of these GMs. If you look at this game closely, you can see that it has a lot of quick threats and impulsive moves. These guys used to be masters of long range planning to get you into difficult positions. The titled Tuesday or whatever they're called is good for fun and quick money maybe, but when they get back to classical, many of them suffer because they lose their positional sense and their endgame knowledge.
What the hell are you saying? Carlsen two months ago won the World Cup, a full tournament of classical games
@marcodemartino1179 He was playing much weaker players even Pragg and Keymer were low 2700s that's a difference of 100+ points
@@FenShen-us9tv Delusional
@@nigellee1995 Carlsen said so himself genius. "I'm glad i'm not playing the top guys this time"
they are cheating. Look at the security, no delay. Its a joke
For the first time i have heard Sagar say, THIS IS NOT A GOOD MOVE for Magnus. Wow. Never expected to hear this
Bc this is not a live game commentary..

Can one pro chess player these days take a loss gracefully? Man
I have the feeling that the 2700plus club is too elite, they know each other and prepare, also psychologically. When facing unknown, but good players it is uncomfortable. And Magnus tried to get into murky waters with Ne7 which is an invitation for a player who likes Kasparov games and analysed them well. Just a bad day for Magnus.
2700 is Elite af. Only 36 player today are rated above 2700 out of 2044 grandmasters. That makes the 2700s top 1% amongst the grandmasters
@@thegodkira3953 Exactly, and those view meet again and again in super tournaments while you dont know anything about the "weaker" players. We should have more occasions like the Qatar masters. Many are good enough to be also in that elite circle.
Hikaru touched on this topic as well as he mentioned that nowadays you really have a hard time with players rated 2500-2600 and even with 2400 players as everyone is getting stronger.
2700 players indeed are the elite but is the gap as big as it seems to be is another topic.
I agree, he just played not as good he plays normaly
@@Electronite1978these daya after engine rating are misleading lot of player's better than that
Congratulations Alisher, good game!
Sulemenov can double his fees as a chess coach.
Magnus loses to a struggling 23yr old chess coach so that his coaching business grows. Magnus is so humble. Be like Magnus.
😂
😂😂
Great game by suleymenov🎉🎉, but its intresting that no body praises his brilliant and accurate moves , rather all are interested in defeat of magnus
Blame the loss on a watch??Come on, man....that's petty.
He never blamed the loss on a watch tho
@@CowboyAyeSee Magnus's tweet

Love your commentary Sagar! Thank you!
What a game by the young GM!!!
When magnus wins, its just another tuesday for him
When magnus loses, opponent cheated
Comeon.. Pls give due respect to other player.
Idiot thinking from magnus worst sportsmanship 😅
Nobody said he cheated
Just look at the comments.
Where can I buy that watch ?
I watched this games 3 time before #SagarShah commentary on different channels. Now i am watching this game for the 4th time in SagarShah's commentary to learn and enjoy more... 👍🏻 👍🏻
That commentry is incredibly annoying
very good commentary, congrats!
To anyone thinking Suleymenov was cheating, did he also make Magnus put 3 major pieces on poor passive squares? Must be some watch that !!
I don't think suleymenov cheated but your argument is not correct.
If Magnus is playing an opponent who he knows is 2500 he will play in a certain aggressive way. That will misfire if the 2500 plays a perfect 3200 level game which suleymenov did. And because of that Magnus is forced to retreat and put his pieces on passive squares just to try and come back to equality.
If your opponent is much stronger than you, your play will always look bad in hindsight. That doesn't mean you are a bad player.
Brother, it's Magnus Carlsen. Pretty sure next time he loses the opponent's shirt would be too distracting. Then pants, then face, etc.
@@ishanjoshi1350 Magnus is just a crybaby
@@gerryteiglandeide9902 admit it or not its not a rare sight to witness a chess pro player show some saltiness since the majority of them if not all of them has pride in their skill as a chess player whenever they lose it actually hurts most of them to an emotional level since playing chess is literally their "Job" or should we call it "Career", they grow up playing the game of chess and look at hikaru, kasparov, eric etc. they get pretty upset when getting the outcome they didn't expect or want at the moment it also applies to other careers but you get the point.
The moment we have been waiting for : "The GOAT has been tamed" in Sagar's commentary
You gotta give the time stamp! I gotta hear it
We all can expect a mighty comeback from Magnus. Generally after a loss, he bounces back very strongly.
Zip him up after you’re done bruh
Wow, what a game!! Those pins and forks and sacrifices.. brilliant!
Absolutely great commentary, like I was watching a football game! :D
Any player who successfully defeats Magnus, should print out the notation of that game and professionally frame it on their wall. 👍
Especially after such a beautiful game
This guy is going to be the new guy to look out for much like Vincent Keymer and Nodirbek Abdusattarov.
Increíble la templanza del joven frente a Magnus.
One of the Best game of 2023!!!… What a game!!!!!❤
what a game, that was a brutal game, now, every GM's knows that to beat magnus they need some sacrifice and brilliant move
Half the commenters here are more paranoid than Carlsen.
3:27 watch
Crushes the goat and not even a hint of a smile.
His watch is analogic...Totally normal. Poor Carlsen, poor guy
This chess game has sparked a new chess controversy
Please upload praagg videos too
Nice job sagar
When Magnus was granted the wish of “invincible” he was told that one day an unknown underrated the one who is neutral will be born and will defeat u.
Magnus might have blundered because of the fact that he sacrificed heavy pieces the way he did it in front of anand in 2013. Or maybe because of the fact that he did not make all his pieces active as he made his queen 'secure' with the rooks but that simply spilled more juice on his side. That's what I think.
Last phrase shocked me! THE FIRST TIME SHE LOST AGAINS A 2500 SINCE 2006! WHAAAAAT
I like how people have a hard time believing that arguably the best chess player of all times lost to a 300 elo points weaker player because he was mad at organizators for efing up anti-cheat measures. Totally unbelievable..
What was time control? Seems like Classical.
Magnus 's tweet is in poor taste and does not become the GOAT!
He could have raised the issue quietly with the organisers afterwards.
The rules allow for analog watches. If you have any problem with any rule in contest you need to address it BEFORE you participate, or do not participate in that contest. Anyone that has ever worn a watch knows they cling to your skin and can feel awkward, so you move it to uncling it and get some air under it. I do this constantly. It is pathetic that all the Magnus fanboys moan as much as sore loser Magnus does.
This kid checks homework of his Principal ☠️
Brilliant game by young GM❤
supposed to have 1 man do the writing work for two players to focus! The two writing down slows down the excitement indeed.
Well, didn’t see this coming 😢
At the end the score doesn't matter... What does matter is the "state of mind" during the game.
great commentary
I watched many many chess games from old to modern. I never seen crushing masterpiece like Rashid nejmedinov or morphy. But this match change everything
What a match great ❤
Wow amasing what a game
Brilliant chess my Sulemenov
!!!
Amazing win😮🎉
What a beautiful game.
Why do they allow a player to wear a watch? It makes no sense. With cheating being such a big problem in the chess world already, why do organizers still choose not to enforce the easy rules? Do they think chess won't die fast enough? I'm not saying the player cheated in this case, but it is just bad policy to allow players to wear any device.
Very true.
A true die hard magnus still follow his false reputation what a puppet cant escape his own red pill.
The rules allow for analog watches. If you have any problem with any rule in contest you need to address it BEFORE you participate, or do not participate in that contest.
The rules say electronic devices are prohibited. Analogue watches are not electronic.
Magnus is just big, trying something new all the time 👍
Theres no suspicious here no watch speak for itself
What do they write on paper after each move?
People who bullied them at school. One name after each move
Fantastic
What a comentator! So great!
Yeah 🎉Nice Game ❤❤
Where is Suleymenov now? He did not any more match in the tournament? Or knocked out in some other matches?
Looks like magnus wish to go for a defensive variant and see how it goes.. but he didn't expect that kind of attack.
Even I would have beaten magnus in this game after his initially bad pan structure. Kudos to the opponent
Magnus has never played a game exactly like that and it will not happen again
That watch though 👀
Very few times Magnus has been strangled like this..Well played rising star
Yeah Magnus is right watches shouldn't be allowed in the match as well as spectators with gadgets on.. but I hope this young gm's credibility will not be destroyed like he did to Nieman
Neimann is doing just fine, he needed those accusations to properly fuel his villain role
I have never seen any man with such composure as Alisher Sulleymenov, he is an absolute master of zen or whatever you choose to call it. Such calm demeanor and pacific movement almost kindness. I believe he is the greatest Chess player that lives.
I am pretty sure Magnus was trying something different and did not mind losing ... moreover, he was trying to play a different line for experience with Black pieces ... But Suleymenov definitely played Great Chess
Just so stupid....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
So after this watch scandal, the chess federation decided that Alisher will play his next matches wearing a speedo only, locked in a glass cage like magneto with a hannibal lector mask on.
Only fools would think it´s not only possible to cheat, but some might even do it, right? Get real.
@@aventura8491 exactly, thats why the chess federation went a step above all this. Just reading, now, from tomorrow on, every player has to wear an alu hat (they didnt specify if provided or if players need to construct their own) to prevent reading each others minds.
How many points did magnus lose from this game?
Guy with 2 girls dancing at back😌😌
Guy see watch🤯
far more exciting than the game was the commentary
Are we allowed to play with hand watches in chess tournaments?
I have never seen anybody beating Magnus Carlsen like this ! Suleymenov has beaten Carlsen with such an ease and confidence which is quite astonishing !!!
This is chess history. 🙏
Well played.
I dont see Magnus asking the arbiter about Suleymenovs Watch
People's take on conspiracies is ridiculous.
best game of the tournament
Shoked waw what a play love you
Is it necessary to write? What they're writing. Each and every move?
Bro It is called notation. It is written by the players so that they have something like a proof that what they had move in the game.
Satisfaction
The Queen is not at all provoked to move ! According to the openings database,
there are 8 ways to respond; Magnus just played his Queen very early in the game:
( 5. Qc2 )( 5. Qb3 )( 5. Qa4 )( 5. b3 )( 5. e3 )( 5. Nc3 )( 5. Ne6 )( 5. Nbd2 )
Samay be like
" I can tell by Sagar's voice, he's been waiting this moment for decades" 😂😅
nice watch
The rules allow for analog watches. If you have any problem with any rule in contest you need to address it BEFORE you participate, or do not participate in that contest.
Magnus says he’s uncomfortable with the opponents watch when he wasn’t even looking at it at all and his watch is clearly facing the way Magnus is looking 😅😂
Am i the only one who notices Magnus opponent occasionally fidgets with his bracelet and watch?
To beat Magnus, all you have to do is to tattoo your wrist with a watch and witness Magnus suffer a nervous breakdown 😊
12:29 Shake hands but looking winner eyes 😂😂😂😂
The young dude was very long in book getting a dominant position
Can anyone explain why magnus resigns
How many points will he lose out of his elo rate for Magnus
why does magnus keeps on standing?
He was considered cheating if they don't have fanboys lol.
is it fine to wear a wrist watch in these tmts?
genial!
