Belly Boat (Float Tube) Fly Fishing for Trout

- It's belly boat (aka float tube) time and we are fly fishing for trout on a tributary of a local lake. It's my first time belly boating and what a scenic spot to do it in. We caught plenty of rainbow trout on our way upstream but I had no luck on the float tube. My first fish came at the rapid where we had our lunch. After that I managed a few good rainbow trout on the fly from my belly boat. What an amazing spot and a trip to remember.

lovely scenery. belly boats are so relaxing, quite enjoyable for a change after a few trips out walking up rivers, you can get really close to trout, like they don't even realize your there half the time, great video
Thanks. Yes it was a neat experience, especially the rising fishing in the afternoon that just did not seem bothered by us. Like the one I caught just meters behind Barrie. Will definitely be doing that again some time soon.

Thanks Nathan, hopefully your based in the "rest of nz" and can get out close to home from Tuesday. It's going to be a few more weeks for me sadly. Love that spot too and keen to go back this summer. I want to go above the rapid and fish the river. Looked very good up there.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Thank you for encouragement!! I think the basics of how to navigate using the float tube would be awesome! I have yet to see any of those videos. I imagine it to be very easy to navigate at the end of the day!
@@tonganfisherman thanks for the idea, it's a good one because you go backward it can be a bit hard, also the kind of fins you have can make it much easier or harder to kick. It will be a while before I get to make it, maybe next season but I will cover that in a future video. Thanks for the idea.

I love float tube fly fishing too! Great video, looks like you gents had a wonderful time out on the water! Can't wait until we have open water here again in Spring/Summer, my casting arm is itching to throw some fly line!
Thanks, I must say it was fun and I look forward to doing it again. Closed seasons are tough. Thankfully we have some open water through winter here and it's not so cold that everything freezes, so we can still get out to fish. I'd struggle if there was nothing open. @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing our winters last about 6 months here lol but there’s always something to do like different hunting seasons, and trapping seasons, ice fishing also! But unfortunately for my fly fishing we got a fairly short window haha love it though, cheers mate and thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment I appreciate that and I also strive to do the same for comments on my videos, shows a lot of class! Hi Johan, a very nice bit of “Armchair fishing” with some old mates, I would recommend that you try this on the Big O as it is very productive way of fishing that lake. I personally can’t use tubes as when I get into any float fishing I need ungently to have a slash. It’s river fishing for me! Thanks mate. Harera
This is so funny because what I didn't put in the video is my emergency loo stop 😂 I definitely can't do more than 2 hours in there 😅 so we are in the same boat there. Thankfully there was a place to get out. Definitely keen to try it on lake O. Heard so much about it and only fished it once years ago. Maybe next season.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Hi, if the Big O canal is moving try a drift down the canal. Use to be able to drive my company vehicle down the track along the left bank to fish the banks. I would not use my own car, but everyone knows that company vehicles can go anywhere! There are some humungous fish in this lake, just don’t try eating them. Awesome! I've always wanted to try fishing from a float tube looks like a lot of fun, would be very interesting if hooked up to a 20 pounder! Bought a Hobie 14' Pro Angler fishing kayak instead, faster more maneuverable and dryer. Cool upload keep up the good work bro.
Thanks Jason, your kayak will certainly be a fishing machine. I came very close to buying a hobie pro angler at one stage. I must say I did enjoy the slow pace of the float tube. Different experience and fun.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing,I think its good to slow down sometimes John. The "slow pace" with float tubes and Kayaks can defiantly be an advantage. You tune in and notice things that you might not normally notice , target fish that you cant from the bank. Would love to see you getting towed around Arapuni by a 20 pound brown ;) Keep it up bro, again great vid!

I like to "troll" streamers when I fly fish from my float tube. I have found it to be quite effective.

@@danielkim3589 yeah not much within that range. Only place I kan think of is Lake Karapiro and the Pokaiwhenua mouth. Definitely worth a fish from a belly boat.
