I remember this. Detroit was HEAVILY favored in this series as well as holders of the best record in the league. It wasnt even supposed to be close and the NJD swept them up.

I'm a long time Devils fan myself. This was the first Stanley Cup final that I saw when I was young. Watching this again gives me so much nostalgia, especially hearing Doc Emrick's play by play because he was also the normal play by play for the Devils back in the day on Fox Sports New York/MSG Plus.
Easiest money I ever made gambling was taking the Devils to win this series.
How easily everyone forgets that the Devils should have won the Cup the previous year.
This was the first hockey game I ever watched. My brother in law had it on VHS and played it for me, and explained the rules of hockey. I have been a Devil's fan since that moment. I'm going to a Devil's game in a few weeks.

This should have been released on an official NHL DVD, along with the other 9 top games in New Jersey Devils history. Not sure why some teams got that special treatment, while others did not. The NHL should have given every team an equal chance for their respective fans, but of course politics and money dictate everything in this crazy world.

@@ianmillerdevilsfan1223 Yeah, that makes a lot of sense as to why they didn't get the DVD treatment, as their style of play was unpopular. Three Stanley Cups are still a sign of success either way, despite their trap system.

I know what you mean, this was the first cup finals I remember watching as a kid and am glad I do cause it was some of the best hockey to watch in the 90s. I dunno why people think the trap is the worst hockey around cause it's not. Nvm brodure is the greatest goalie of all time
@@nickcottrell9594 Yeah, the Devils were dominant and had a system that worked. They weren't simply playing defense, they often scored goals.
As for Martin Brodeur, he always put up impressive numbers, even when his team played poorly.
Despite his team failing to make it into the 1996 NHL Playoffs, he had a winning record and was the only reason why they even got close to qualifying.
His teammates got wasted after winning the franchise's first Stanley Cup and it took them until the year 2000 to finally clear their heads hahaha!
Martin carried a mediocre New Jersey Devils club to the 2012 finals. I was really hoping that they would win that season, as it would have proven that Brodeur could snatch a Stanley Cup without a wall in front of him.
Either way, despite being a Devil, his numbers don't lie. Martin Brodeur is one hell of a great goaltender!
My hockey fandom was weird. I am a diehard Devil fan but getting there was weird. I grew up in upstate NY. We had a little franchise move there in the mid 90's called the river rats. They were a perennial playoff team and won the calder cup in 95. Huge in albany. That was our pro team. It took me well over a decade to transfer my love of them to the big team.

I was 1 and a half at the time so it was before I became a fan of the Devils. I am today a season ticket holder of the Devils and they are a major part of my life. They have given me so many special moments that I hold very dear to me. I don't know what my life would be like without them. To hear the Sportscenter pieces at the end of the video talking about the rumors of relocation to Nashville was extremely hard to watch. I am extremely grateful that never happened. Thank you for uploading this video though. Let's Go Devils!
Yes I share the pain. The Red Wings used to be elite team in NHL as well as the Devils. Now we are both an afterthought. One day we will both be back.
Lol I was the same age. I came to sports later in my teenage years but became a huge fan of this team through thick and thin. Thank goodness they never relocated.
I've been to many, many games. I've worked at the Prudential Center doing IT. I've met Devils players as well as other NHLers, team staff, NHL officials, announcing crews, etc. All the people that make this league and this great sport tick (even if the NHL frustrates me a lot lately). All of that magic and those memories, all because they did not relocate to Nashville. A 3 year period of my life that I will never forget. Thank you, my beloved New Jersey Devils and the NHL for hiring me.

The Wings knew they had to get a lot more physical after getting beat by the Devils in the 95 finals and the Avs in 96 WCF. That all started with the trade for Brendan Shanahan, bringing Joey Kocur back, and then forming the grind line.

I remember watching this in the common area of a Campground in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The room was packed and luckily I found myself a nice comfortable chair right in front of the TV. I didn't get up at all.
There are 2 interesting interviews. Gary Bettman is interviewed at 02:03:26. The crowd chants Bettman sucks very loudly. As Devs fan, I was convinced Bettman wanted the team to move. Claude Lemiuex is interviewd at 08:04. He talks about being the most hated man in hockey.
Certainly this was a depressing series as a Red Wings fan. But they made it up for it 2-3 years later. But I love the old NHL on ESPN game coverage and pregame, though FOX did this game as well as Game 1. ESPN did Games 2 and 3. And the new NHL on ESPN with this awesome theme is great and so glad it is back. Just need the Red Wings to be back to greatness and be on the center of new era of NHL on ESPN!!

This sucked for me as a kid but the quality is excellent and the presentation nostalgia is off the charts. After this and the next year seemed like the Wings would never win.

Crash Line were bullies with skill back then! No one could score on that line back then but yet we could score on any team 😂 was unbelievable to watch trust me! Holik has scored 25 plus goals and McKay has been a force offensively in the playoffs in his career! He scored 8 goals that year in 1995 playoffs and could’ve won the Con Smythe if it wasn’t for Lemieux so we didn’t have your average 4th Line back then! Devils were also way too quick for Detroit with our young guns Rolston, Guerin etc…. and we found a gem 💎 the last piece of the puzzle 🧩 signing Neal Broten who was once not too far from Gretzky offensively so we had a sick squad that could beat any Stanley Cup winning team! Couldn’t stand the devils style, that club, and the league had to make so many rule changes to make the flow better to counter that Lemaire defense, but I miss this hockey. Hard nosed, tough, and gritty. 90s was probably the best time because the skill great and it still had that hard nosed toughness
Wow we share the exact thoughts. As much as the trap along with the neutral zone still around it made it impossible to play against. Was annoying. Now they were boring. Hockey as a whole wasn't at all. The low scoring in general from about 97-04 still had amazing hockey. The score didn't tell the story. Anyone who watched hockey back then loved it. Was wild. Rivalries were intense. The game was awesome. The league is too obsessed with "fixing the game" when it never needs to. By doing that you take away what true hockey people love and cater to the ones who deep down don't care. Can't do that. Hockey was super fun in the late 80s and early 90s still with the high scoring. What's weird was it was just as fun even once the scoring dropped shortly after. I know safety and all that is worrisome to people and I get it but man I miss pre lockout 05-06 hockey so bad.
The tactics were used because it makes low talent teams competitive. The same thing happened with the mid 70's when the Flyers won. It wasn't just the rule changes, it was enforcement of interference all over the ice. NJ's tactic was rather simple: First use the trap to force a dump in, but then interfere with the chasers while they go for the puck and have Brodeur or D-men play it. Tight checking actually meant hold, tug and generally interfere with off puck players. The NHL allowed it because they knew talented teams would overwhelm others. While the neutral zone did change things, that was a leftover from a WW2 change to do what..to slow the game down due to the talent shortage. At the same time in the rest of the world, the two line pass rule didn't exist. The Swedes invented the trap to compete with the Russians who refused to dump the puck but it wasn't as effective against North American teams because they would dump and chase.
@@miskwaad Sorry, but that is just flat-out wrong. The neutral zone trap was mastered by the Montreal Canadiens of the 1970s as a counter-attacking OFFENSIVE weapon. The "trap" was only the first step. It's no coincidence that it was brought to New Jersey with two legendary Hall of Famers (Jacques Lemaire and Larry Robinson).
When the Devils were at their best they were also a strong offensive team. They won in 1995 with almost the same roster as their 1993-1994 team that lost in the Eastern Conference Finals after finishing #2 in the NHL in scoring (to Detroit). Their 1999-2000 championship team was also #2 in scoring in the NHL. The 2000-01 team that lost in the Stanley Cup Finals led the NHL in scoring. Look at the rosters of those teams. They didn't have the same talent up front that they had on defense and in goal, but their forward ranks were filled with solid players and even some borderline Hall of Famers ... Patrick Elias, Alexander Mogilny, Bill Guerin, Jason Arnott, Stephane Richer, Neal Broten, Claude Lemieux, Scott Gomez, John MacLean, Brian Rolston, Bernie Nicholls, etc. Bobby Holik would consistently put up 15-20 goals every year while centering their FOURTH line, for heaven's sake.
@herman you’re also wrong about the the devils. They played in a much weaker eastern conference. 96 Florida, 97 Philly, and 98 Washington all were no match for the east as they all got swept. Colorado Detroit and Dallas were the best teams of that era and they all beat up on each other. New Jersey was good too, but they also played in a much much weaker eastern conference. They were the only eastern team to win from 96-03.

Low key did the best he could have.
Had there not been a lockout to start the 94-95 season than there might have been less venom towards him. Other than that, this was Bettman’s 3rd season as commissioner, NJ fans really had no reason to be upset with him at that time. Many years later they might have a better gripe since the league basically had to change its rules to counter what Lemaire and his defensive system did to the game
