    I have three Garmin 45's (older model) in my Fit (forward, reverse, interior). I love the magnetic mount. They're over 5 years old now without problems, although I don't drive much. 8000 miles total.
    I also have one Garmin 57 (forward) and two Garmin 47's (reverse, interior) in my Civic. These newer ones don't give you the option to keep recording (30s, 1min) after power is cut off. But Garmin did abandon the "we'll only charge if using our cables" nonsense in this generation. On the 45's, I had to make special micro-USB connectors with a resistor in them to mimic Garmin cables.

    Great Video! I would say based on your sample side by side or Top / Down video of both Cams, the 47 doesn't seem to be missing out on much at all..Meaning the 140 vs 180 really aren't that different per your samples. The best test was at the intersection but even then when you driving and approaching (Street corners, Intersections, Passing Cars, or still on the Hwy) traffic you're talking miliseconds of a difference in view. Therefore, for me I think the 47 would be best and and less fiddling with resolutions etc.

    Thanks for the review! I wish you had spoken about the WiFi capabilities. It seems like their documentation focuses on having the WiFi all the time but what I wanted to have was a camera that when I returned home and parked that would then connect to the WiFi and upload all the footage from that day. Do these cameras do that? Have you tried that? Or do you have WiFi in your cars that it uses? I can't imagine that even the WiFi cars have it working when it's off and parked, that seems like a recipe for disaster (gives someone plenty of time to break into your WiFi and potentially screw with your car). Thoughts?
    I also read that the footage is stored in one minute videos on the SD card. I assume that means that to create your vide at the end you had to load at least 10 different videos? Is that why there are breaks in the video, because after recording for a minute you had to restart the recording for another minute? That would make it impossible to get an unbroken 10-minute video then?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Hello! I didn’t speak about WiFi because these cameras don’t fully do what you’re talking about there. The WiFi is mainly used for connecting to the camera and pulling clips down from it should you get pulled over or something like that. You might want to look into the one that has a 4G data modem built in (also requiring a subscription fee) for a truly cloud based dash cam. I’ve never personally felt the need to have all my dash cam clips in the cloud though, as I can just go down to the garage and pull the SD card out of the camera. Way, way faster to do that. As for the clips, all dash cams save footage in one to two minute clips. It’s how they manage storage on the SD card. They’ll constantly record and when the card is getting full they’ll automatically delete the oldest clips. And the video at the end was broken up into different pieces because it was from two different 30 minute drives and I didn’t think anyone wanted to sit through an hour of video LOL. So I edited it to show just certain parts of each.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 3 měsíci

      I did not, I don’t think there’s a polarizing filter that works for the 67 because the 180-degree lens is a fisheye that protrudes out quite a bit. As for battery, I’m not entirely sure I’ve never tested it to see how long it lasts but most dash cam batteries last around 5-10 minutes.

      Hello! It does work for parking guard but I’m not sure how many incidents it would last for. I also have mine hooked up to the OBD2 adapter set to 10 minutes so that for most places I’m running into it’ll cover the whole trip.

      @Miketoberdink Před měsícem

      @@joshjamescarsthanks for the reply. My original question isn't very realistic. I imagine it would pick up at least 1 incident (bump / hit) in a couple hour time span? Am I right to assume that it's not using any of the battery until an incident is detecting then starts to record? Constant power may be ideal as I often leave my car unattended for 4-6 hours. I really found this video informative so much that I purchased a Garmin dash cam. I have been wanting one for a while. I had considered the Lexus dash cam but the dealership in my area did not have the dash cam for a 2022 GX and was not aware of one. I guess you could consider yourself an influencer. Also, my husband had ordered a Ring dash cam not sure what happened to that. It really would have come in handy today because he was involved in an accident where someone did a rolling stop and lost control. Is it possible that you could do a video showing how you installed it in the GX? Again, thanks for the info.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      Hello! I’m so glad this was helpful and that you picked one up. I hope your husband is okay after the accident, too. That’s never fun, especially with car repair and dealing with insurance. I don’t think you or he is missing out with the Ring dash cam. I tried it when it first came out but the placement at the foot of the windshield versus the top like most cameras obscured so much of the image, which wasn’t super clear to begin with. Also made it impossible to use any kind of sunshade! It felt to me like they took one of their (admittedly great) home security cameras and put it in what they thought would be a great housing for a car. And yes I can definitely do a video on that, though I think it will be quicker to look up “how to dress dash cam wire” or something to that effect and I’m sure a bunch of great videos will come up showing the best ways to “dress” the cable once you have the camera in a spot that you like. Cheers!

In many locales, ALL the footage on it can get subpoenaed for any reason. And yes, it seems to though fortunately neither of my cars have gotten bumped while parked so I can’t say for sure.

  • @bohan9957
    @bohan9957 Před 8 měsíci +8

    Great review. Garmin is definitely on my list, but my dilemma is they currently do not make a super capacitor version of the camera. I live in Phoenix and it is a hazard to have a battery operated dash cam in the car during the summer, especially if the battery is lithium chemistry. It is much safer to use super capacitor dash cams here since in the interior of the car can reach 160F+. I've had cases with laptop battery swelling up just by leaving in the car for 9 hours because I forgot it bring it into office one day.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I live in Texas where it can also get pretty hot and have only ever had a problem with dash cams where the entire camera body mounts directly to the surface of the glass (as opposed to a mount that attaches to the glass). That said, the quality association that comes with Garmin (who has decades of experience making devices that can withstand extreme heat) is also why I went with them. So far, so good! That said, you can also go with the Mini2 which doesn’t have a battery at all and can use the OBD2 adapter instead!

    • @joshjamescars

      Most dash cams need to be wired all the time. The batteries in them are only there to power them for a few minutes here and there for incident detection while parked. So yes you use the included cable and run it to either a USB port or the OBD2 port in the car and then dress it nicely.

    Hi, thank you for your review!🙂👍
    To me it looks as if you can't see license plates and street signs that are a little further away so well on the 67W. Especially at night. But that could also be due to the compression of the video.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Both are true; you can definitely see more clearly in the raw video (I had to export the video at one resolution and of course CZcams compresses it), but the 67W is also designed to capture a wider field of view at the sacrifice of some of the finer details. If a vehicle were to hit you, however, they would be close enough to be able to read their plate. That said, if someone is doing something far away from you I don’t think anyone has any business reading their plate.

      the 47 is not LTE compatible from what I’ve done research on. So in circumstances when I’m not in my own WiFi area to get unsaved videos on the app, how can I obtain them? Do I always have to be in my WiFi area in order to retrieve those. It concerns me because what if I get into an accident out on the road and need the footage right there and then.

      The camera creates its own wifi network that you join on your phone that links the camera and app together.

      The problem is I have to select a resolution and frame rate for the entire video so I wouldn’t be able to accurately show you what both look like. As it is with this video I edited it at 1440p and so the 1080p looks a little crunchier than it actually does in real life because it’s being stretched. That’s what footage samples from Garmin or others on forums are great for.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 24 dny

      No, that’s not correct. I think what you’re reading is that it won’t automatically preserve clips unless you tell it to. All dash cams are constantly recording and will rewrite over old files on the memory card.

  • @juliava605
    @juliava605 Před 5 měsíci

    Josh, with the Mini 2 with OBD Constant Cable you can set the amount of time you want it to record when parked. So you can turn it OFF if the car is in your garage, or switch it to record for 12 or 24 hours. There's a little slider on the side of the camera for this purpose, I believe.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes but the problem with that is it won’t respond to a bump in a parking lot beyond that set timeframe like every other dash cam out there will which is what I want. So, if your car gets hit and the camera isn’t powered, you’re out of luck to get any kind of info.

    • @juliava605
      @juliava605 Před 5 měsíci

      But it's not going to get bumped in your garage, right? So you turn it off. Now if you are parked elsewhere and want it turned on, you simply flip the little switch. Am I misunderstanding? I'm looking for one as a Christmas gift for my son and am baffled by all the choices. Many recommend the Mini ... thus my questions. Thank you! @@joshjamescars

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci

      No but that’s an incredible hassle to have to do every single time. Do you want to be reaching under your dashboard every single time you park your car in public? I wouldn’t. The 47 and 67 have an internal battery that will just automatically record footage when the internal gyro detects something bumping the car. No need to constantly switch the OBD-2 adapter on and off.

    can it be hardwired without OBD

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci

      Depends on how you define “hardwired”. The device needs to be connected to vehicle power to operate while driving and your options to do that are the OBD-2 adapter, a standard USB plug, or some third parties make a wiring harness that plugs into the driver assist camera unit but I don’t recommend messing with that.

      Yes! You can have that added to the stamp along the bottom as well as your GPS coordinates on certain models. However do keep in mind that if you are in an accident, even if it’s not your fault, if you’re even 5 over the limit and that’s documented, you can run into all kinds of issues, so personally I leave that off.
