happy to be stuck in 2019 with ya pal
Oh hello there nice to see you ;) Well being in 2019 is nice if I have my friends Lili and Goyf, at least.
Those were the days my friend, I brought Jund to every major Modern tournament from like 2013ish onward until the deck became unfeasible.@@8thPlaceDave
I hope you guys wear masks, the cough in the end sounded like corona.
How'd you jump to 2019??? I'm still stuck in 2015 modern/legacy...
The force of negation is such a mood. "This dude is having way too much fun for someone playing in the last table like me on the last round of this tourny..."
Appreciated seeing Tarmogoyf in the graveyard. How the mighty have fallen😢
I wonder if the surveil land will help tarmagoyf at least a little bit.
This was no accident. That 'goyf was Pushed!
@@Reluxthelegend surveil lands will only be run as a 1 off
one off is more than enough when you have fetches, just means that putting stuff into the graveyard is even easier. now a fetch could mean 2 card types in the graveyard instead of just one when you want.
@@Reluxthelegend of course it will help goyf, now you can send it straight to the GY instead of drawing it, leaving your opponent's removal spells stuck in their hand!
I remember back in the day, when I was first learning Magic, playing a 2/2 Monk for 3-mana that gained me 2 life. That was pretty cool.

I remember playing Vampire Nighthawks in mono black tribal back in my day. Meanwhile the opponents were playing Caw-Blade. Don't really think there is something like the good old days. MTG always feels like the same great game to me.

"Stuck in 2019" is a funny statement. As if it's some sort of forgotten vintage magic era, whilst it's actually 5 years of extreme power creep.
Especially funny considering that 2019 was the year of THE Gak and Oko.
2019 Had more Power creep than 2020,21,22 or 23 IMO
Overall, magic cards in general, total power creep. Gak and Oko was the start of it. It's normal now, that cards/Planeswalkers are just a total wall of text with busted combos left and right, it's ridiculous. Things that were busted mythics are just normal cards now, it's kind of nuts dude. Been playing for over 12 years and I would totally agree with 2018-2019 things started to get reeeeeeeeeal power creepy dude...
Ah, yes, the classic "pitch the best black creature to have a good black creature turn 1" wombo combo
But now it's in my grave so I can recur it to the battlefield for cheap! I'm playing black man, think! Now I can have that card for only 3 mana instead of 4 (assuming I drew a recursor in the opening hand).
Joke, but if they genuinely drew that the play would make sense.

Fire design's meaning was always to burn every format to the ground.
Right. Play Burn in modern. Got it.
@@mad_max21 0 mana cost lightning bolt in MH3, genius idea!
FIRE design (and project booster fun) always made me laugh because it's like a child came up with it. "For cards to be fun to use they need to be mega powerful and be instant win buttons! (Because winning is fun) So we are making sure that new cards are overly pushed for constructed and warp every format".
@@vulcanh254 That sounds like FIRE in a nutshell, yep. (Project Booster Fun is just about dozens of different art treatments, though, I thought? Pretty cards for those who want them, as long as nobody wants to collect *all* of them.)
@@alextfish Well that's a whole other discussion but to me project booster fun just proved they have no idea what they're doing with collector boxes. 😅 MaRo had this funny theory that including all sorts of weird variants somehow makes packs more fun to open. In reality though you're not hyped because you opened an ugly variant, you're hyped because you opened a 40$ mythic lol. So what MaRo and WotC don't seem to get is that all these "collector variants" are meaningless if there's no actual scarcity. It's not the frame or border that people like, it's the "wow I got this rare treatment". If anime confetti waifus were 25 cents, people would stop caring because they wouldn't be special or hard to get anymore. I wouldn't buy packs to hunt for them, I would buy 20 copies online. So again the scarcity matters more than the frame, art or treatment.
20 years ago there was zero variants but it was still very exciting to crack packs. Partly because foils were cooler / rarer (and better quality) and some commons and uncommons could be worth a lot. Today you open a foil mythic and you don't care because it's 50 cents. I miss when opening a foil mythic was a big deal lol.
I can't imagine the value 😢
You forgot the fat stacks of cash required to even get those decks.
These short skits are great!

Looks like Yugioh level shenanigans
Yeah, sadly we are very close to being Yugioh where by turn two the game is pretty much over.
Tear 2: magic edition
If it does end up being just like it I'll be happy. Loved the format. But if it becomes pend ftk then I will eat my words.
I remember hearing a joke about the Vintage format: the coin flip who decide goes first is the early game, drawing your hand is the mid-game, and turn 1 precombat main phase is late game
@@Triceratopping The original joke was, I believe, in reference to Pro-Tour Rome in 1998. (Specifically, as Mark Rosewater phrased it, "The early game was the coin flip. The mid game was the mulligan. And the end game was the first turn.") In that tournament, Brian Hacker famously won on the 2nd turn after only playing Gustha's Scepter -- and nothing else, lands included -- on the 1st turn.
Pro-Tour Rome was the Extended format, which was the last four blocks, as opposed to Standard, which was the last two blocks. Ironically enough, the Extended format was replaced by Wizards with ... the Modern format. So, really, we're sorta comin' full circle :/
@@DeadlyGrim superstar, that's the one!
Arguably, that turn 2 threshold has been there ever since Stoneforge Mystic got unbanned. But the power and speed creep have only accelerated since.
It makes me unreasonably happy to see the Hapatra Yawgmoth combo.
I like how the only deck left in modern that isn't doing something degenerate is Burn.
Yeah haha
And Goblins
If a cockroach from Modern's past had to survive the Horizons apocalypse, I'm glad it was a fair deck.
I felt that outtake on a personal level
Straight to modern sets ruined modern.
Every time Wizards creates a product that is tailored to a particular format, it ruins the format. As a commander player, the "Year of Commander" was absolutely terrible.
@@ImperialVersian Commander doesn't feel ruined at all
@@ImperialVersian commander players would bitch about everything and anything, if anything is ruining commander are them
@@byronstier7438trust me, as a long time player it's very much ruined and the novelty died a while ago. Since every day is Tuesday, yes it was, but also yes it was
It's one thing for the game to change, but is it actually fun anymore??
Too many games change vertically, instead of horizontally these days...
I've been playing modern since 2014 and fuck yeah it is. other than $$$, MH was fantastic for the format
I mean, modern is not the entire game of magic. There are a lot of slower formats, but honestly the fast ones can be fun too
Been playing since the 90s and yeah the game can be fun still. Everything has this issue of folk abusing good will these days, like folk playing casual games against folk with their best decks, these people have worse decks and could use them but nah they’d rather play like ante is still a thing.
Stuck in 2019…. I feel you bro
i love playing commander
I saw a manga about this card game and im pretty interested but as soon as i saw how it actually look like in real life it's confusing 😂
Because in manga they will show you illustration like how many life point left or how the monster look like or even how the effect looks like
I kinda like the turbo genius meta in the manga even tho i heard it's not allowed anymore 😔
Btw the manga timeline is in 1998 and on chapter 3 i think it's still on the release of exodus pack
thats the moment you build a JUND CASCADE EDH DECK and go back to having fun :)
2019 was the year fires design started?
Never played modern but I guess people who do want to get as much value out of their deck whether it’s fast or through a combo.
Kinda like commander but not as fast
At turn 3 I can grow my forces exponentially, and turn 5 all those forces now have 20 power each at least.
I'm old enough to remember people looking at Serra Angel and being like "oh a 4/4 flyer with vigilance for 5 mana, what great value!"
I play mono black zombies, no sideboard. I play for fun :)
Genuine question: Why are two 4/4 rhinos during turn 3 a big deal in Modern? Isn't the format way strong for 2 creatures with no abilities?
They do have trample, but you also have the 2/2 Shardless Agent. So on turn 3 you're getting 10 power and toughness over 3 creatures guaranteed, and then next turn you'll just do it again.
10 power on turn 3 is pretty fast for modern. It's not the fastest but like, if you stumble a bit the game is pretty much over. Even if you have a sweeper or a removal for one Rhino they might have Force of Negation up. Then half of your life is gone and you are dead next turn.
It's not that easy to put up decently sized creatures that early on without ramping. Sure a goyf could eat one rhino but then you still take 6 damage. And if they bounce, tap or kill goyf next turn then you take another 6. If you fetch + shock you're already at 5 life.
It's not just about the abilities, that is quite a lot of damage and since you don't need mana for the counterspell you can maybe even protect the rhinos. Huge attackers with trample in early game can be as lethal as any combo if you can't block them, see affinity in formats where it's still a tier 1 archetype
At least we won't have to deal qith Grief anymore!
this is exactly why i believe that modern horizons shouldn't exist
COME TO PIONEER YALL
THE MANABASE DOESNT COST A KIDNEY AND YOU ACTUALLY USE IT TO CAST YOUR SPELLS!
Hilariously enough I think pioneer is faster than modern because there's a lot of combo decks. In modern there's so much 0-1 mana interaction that combo and aggro decks struggle. And that means games can last longer.
You can get to turn 9 in modern but in pioneer you'll die to Lotus Field combo on turn 4 if you just durdle around. So as much as I like pioneer you can't really spend too much time setting up or doing fun things. You have to race the combo decks.
Cascade is fun
The double cascade Eldrazi is even more "fun". :D
Soon magic the gathering will be almost indistinguishable from yugioh when it comes to game speed.
Yea, it’s called “modern has been actually dogshit for years”
It’s basically MH block constructed. Can’t wait for that 3rd MH where they throw shit like wasteland in! Maybe brain storm and a ragavan that lets you steal a card from your opponents sideboard and eat it! The possibilities are limitless!
Vintage=Turn 1 wins, total clownage
Legacy=Games end by turn 3, lame
Modern=Games end by turn 4, joke
Standart=Too temporary, have to buy cards that will lose all value
Commander=Used to be fun, now its lame as well
Only remaining fun format is pauper and pauper commander (i have a pauper deck that can actually kill turn 2, but pst).
Power creep killed all the fun i had 17 years ago, when i started playing.
what about pioneer?
Magic is slowly turning into Yugioh.
I would try modern again if we had a horizon-less modern format. I felt the format was incredibly fun before the direct injects. Now I haven't touched it in years.
Good ol boomer jund. But seriously, modern has so much interaction that yawgmoth is like a tier 2 combo deck lol. Grief doesnt matter as you can come back from it and rhinos can be removed quickly in the first couple of turns lol.
Bring back 2019!
The worst part is they had a Play Design team of pros testing MH2 and none of them saw a problem with Fury or Grief. 😂 Even though they knew about the scam strategy they thought it was fine and balanced for modern.
Personally I think Solitude is the only one of the cycle that is "necessary" to keep degenerate creature combos in check. All the other elementals are bad for the game.
They want to sell packs, so they made the cards must-buys.
Modern Horizons 2 was such an egregious overreach and the fact that modern didnt die when it was released is a testament to how badly Hasbro has the playerbase by the nuts.
Money money money money
The only elemental that is truly bad is Grief. Subtlety is widely regarded as the worst of the cycle. Endurance is basically just a good sideboard option. Solitude and Fury are great as removal. So glad that Fury was banned for all those bad, non-existent x/1 based decks to still be bad and non-existent, but whatever.
But that is the thing right? How the hell are they supposed to know? Of course Wizards are just printing cards to squeeze money, but even if they didn't what they are supposed to do?
Some players like creature combos, others play control, most want their pet decks to be tier 1, but not by a lot or everyone would be playing them making it no longer a pet deck. We want better mana, but no too much or everyone will be on five colors. Also please make the cards interesting or the set is boring, but not too interesting or it is power creep. Meanwhile you need to also think about EDH, Legacy, the Burn Players and oh no this Sensai's Divining Top card is making tournaments run forever - we just need to ban it and...
Honestly if I also had to keep track of all this that would be enough, but WoTC executives pushing for Profit and more and more product I am not sure how would anyone be able to maintain even this level of game balance. We should be happy with so people working on MTG. I am myself very much afraid what will come out of Wizards in 2024 given the layoffs and budget cuts they are forcing upon them.
@ondrejbronec837 I mean they're pros and they tested the cards. It was their job to tell wotc: "this seems a little too strong, maybe make it cost more mana or make it a 2/1 instead of 3/2 menace." Or "they should require pitching 2 cards, not 1."
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂this is so wrong, also so many dubitable choice😂😂😂😂😂so awesome i love these video
FREE SPLINTER TWIN!
didnt he had to counter before cascade triggers?
no because you also cast the card you cascade into
before the cascade there is no noncreature spell to counter with force of negation
@@vaffanculoutube yep my bad.
Quit the format when Modern Horizons was released. Sad to see powerhouse decks in the past diminished by these special sets' card strategies.
Or me; turn 1, swamp, scheming symmetry, archive trap, surgical extraction, you cant do your combo anymore
Still easier to follow than modern Yu-Gi-Oh
*pain*
TBF the reason why the Grief example is unjustifiably unfair is that it can happen on T1 for cost of 2 cards and 1 mana to take 2 of your opponent's cards and leave you with a 3/2 menace attacker from T2 on. It's card trade neutral unless your opponent has a way to interact with you, which has to be 1 or 0 mana depending on if they were on the play or draw; most of the ways you could interact with it only soften the blow rather than stop all of it, and usually end up costing more cards to preserve specific cards you wouldn't want to lose.
The synergy is really strong in general, but the reason it's over the line vs most other examples in Modern is because it happens too early to often, which is what makes it so hard to interact with at all and still pretty punishing to the targeted player even if they can do so. It's the reason Flash was too good in Legacy and retractable in Vintage: it just happens too early for too cheap to be fair to expect opponents to be in an "answer this, probably through additional interaction, or lose". When game winning synergies or combos occur, how much they cost and how much it costs to interact with or stop them matters a great deal in determining if they're to unfair to allow in the game.
Meanwhile RUG Footfalls and Yawgmoth are strong, but cost more to pull off and/or require board presence that can be interacted with and happen a few turns later when it's effectively the mid game for Modern and it's very reasonable to expect people to be able to interact with threats.
The joke at the end is that Bloodbraid, which was at one point too good because of the free value it generated in terms of threats that had to get answered, is irrelevant because even if it cascades into Liliana because it will fold to a Force of Negation.....but it's the exact same synergy as RUG Footfalls and the same Force of Negation leads to the same result of the free cascade spell that would have put the cascade player in a position to win getting binned at the cost of the opponent's spell and 3 mana, or the opponent 2-for-1-ing themselves to stop a must be stopped spell. So, like, the main difference is just it's off a 3 cmc 2/2 cascading creature rather than a 4 cmc 3/2 haste. /shrug
HAAHAHAHAHAH you're missing the Primevil Titan on t2
Remembering when I built a Boros Humans homebrew deck in 2019, and it was able to hold its own against all the other decks people used at the LGS (except for Jund, and that was mostly by virtue of it being a midrange deck against my aggro deck), and I was so proud of making something that I could call my own.
Then after Covid hit in 2020, and then Covid vaccines became widespread enough that I could comfortably return to the LGS in 2021, I learned the hard way that my deck got power-crept into oblivion by MH2. It wasn't fun anymore.
And this is why you play Pioneer instead
No problem, they banned fury so they can't scam grief anymore 🎉 - salty murktide player
Because we all know people who were having their board of 8 x/1s getting Fury scammed on the regular. That was the real problem with modern. 😂
what's the point of the yawgmoth combo. wouldn't he just end up at 1 life and a bunch of 1/1 snakes?
You can just stop whenever you want, so you wipe your opponents board, have a full hand of cards, and a battlefield full of snakes. At that point it's usually pretty hard to lose :P
You can dig to a payoff like Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat and now you're life total neutral while they are dying.
oh. that's really neat. can i somehow makle this kind of commbo with rakdos, orzov, or just black?
@@SirFingleton you can do it in mono-black, but it isn't competitive. Green gives you cheap persist creatures, creature tutors, ramp, and Hapatra as the snake backup plan. If you want to infinitely sacrifice in white/black, Teysa 1.0 + painters servant might be better. Red doesn't add anything that black didn't already have.
You can also go infinite with 2 young wolves for example, if you put the -1/-1 counter on the wolf to nullify the +1/+1. Then you win with Blood artist or zulaport cutthroat
I actually feel OK with all of this, you should've included the real villain: Orcish Bowmasters.
If turn one gets any more powerful, let's just switch to playing MTG single player. After all you're gonna win in turn one. The winning move is to go play YuGiOh.
I play Enchantress and cast Emrakul every game. I do not have this problem in life.

Damn, been out of modern since 2019 and I though Jace the mind sculptor and snap caster mage were still relevant. Yeah those elemental evoke cycles really turned magic into yu gi oh solitaire
To be fair Scam is not that consistent anymore after the Fury ban. Sometimes you sitll do have plays like that though. Remember though after that Scam play they are now down 3 cards and you are only down 2. If you draw a kill spell or a blocker they are not that far ahead.
They aren't down 3. One is a body in the bf
@@jaeger2780 yeah, I'd *love* to get a 1-mana 4/3 menace that pings opp for 1 on ltb, that's probably worth over 1 card in value.
It's also not a fair exchange of cards. The card they pitch to Grief will be the worst card in their hand, but the 2 cards they take will be the 2 best cards in your hand. This makes the difference in hand strength and board presence quite large after the exchange.
Grief also has Menace so 1 blocker is not enough, and a kill spell can easily be met with another scam spell making your situation even worse. If you get scammed they are very far ahead. It's still winnable but saying "they are not that far ahead" is just wrong.
That's fair. I played WB Scam for a while and realized Scamming Grief alone often wasn't enough to win. He can easily be bolted. Afterwards. @@thekilla1234
You also need TWO blockers for Grief because of menace. And you’re assuming there’s no further follow up threat or disruption. Often, the scamming Grief will take your two most relevant cards, put a real click on the game, and open the doors to you getting blitz without playing a real game. Scamming a Grief is card neutral to borderline card advantage.
What an interesting coincidence…
All the extremely format breaking broken nonsense cards are Modern Horizons :ooooo
God awful sets.
