- I entered into a Magic: the Gathering RCQ tournament to see if I could beat some of the best players at one of the world's most complex trading card games, and in doing so became even more obsessed with MTG.

Hey everyone! This is a video I've been working on for a while. It's not perfect, and I could have made it better, but as a wise editor once told me: "A project is never done, only abandoned."
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE I FIND MY MUSIC: check out my patreon page for a full music breakdown: patreon.com/twelvebrickstudios
thats litterally the flavor text for the card [rootha, mercurial artist]
This video if perfect bro
@spinningtrain9091 haha I never realized that, keen observation!
I have played Yu-Gi-Oh for a while and from what I've heard it is much harder then basically every other card game. I don't know if you have experience with Yu-Gi-Oh but from what I've seen this is MUCH more confusing.
Dude, nice work!
Best edited magic video I have ever seen.
with zero gameplay
over edited
Define "Magic Video" because I believe Rhystic Studies holds that crown.
have you ever heard of rhystic studies brother
Shorter than the intros to some music videos
You should not be disappointed or discouraged at all, 17th place out of 62 is very impressive for your first RCQ. That’s almost the top 25%! Also, the filmmaking and editing in this video is incredible. Keep it up, you are very skilled.
His score was 2/3 tho…
Many people drop off after 3rd game.
especially considering he was using a budget deck
Yeah this
still 2/3 for first RCQ is reasonable assuming he's not very experienced at competitive magic. It's also Pioneer which I feel like has more variance than any other format right now. @@DS-gu1lt
bro 17th is ballin, I would end up 63rd fr.
Very cool, although one small thing to clarify... The RCQs happen several times per year, and even the Regional Championships and Pro Tours happen multiple times too. The World Championship is the one that happens only once per year.
Ah yes, I realize now how that could sound confusing, what I meant is that these tournaments happen every year, although it does sound more dramatic when you phrase it “every year there’s a tournament…” haha
hi dave
hi dave
oh hello, dave
That's Dave
The production quality of this was insane! Now I want to try a tournament as well
Thanks!
This channel is TINY in comparison to so many, but the production oozes charm. I'm a casual commander player but you've done an amazing job at showcasing what competitive magic could look like. Absolutely going to push this to friends. Looking forward to where you potentially go next.
thanks! Going to continue making videos, not necessarily about MTG but with the same production style
@@ArloPedersen Excellent. I'll go down the rabbit hole for a moment, take a look at some of the other content you're creating.
What region are you in? This makes it sound like RCQs happen once a year when they’re going on almost weekly (given you may have to commute varying distances pending your home address).
Great production though!
Btw I think burn is a better deck on a budget.
Couldn’t have said it better!
There’s smthn special in the passion here!!
I've been a professional editor for 5+ years now, and I can safely say this is one of the best shorts I've seen on CZcams, in every aspect of cinematography. Very well done!
Dude, super impressed by this! It’s rare to see magic portrayed in a way that includes both visual style and thoughtful storytelling. You just got a new sub, I’d love to see more MTG visual stories from you 🤘
Highest Quality Independent Magic the Gathering Video PERIOD. Beautifully written, well paced, cinematic, great soundtrack. I'm actually blown away. 🤯
Thank you! :)
Wtf dude. This video was NUTS. You’re editing and story-telling is top-notch. Keep this quality up and you’ll be HUGE. Excited to watch your future.
You are going to go far. You’ve got a real talent for making videos man! Keep crushing it and enjoying life along the way!
Truly professional editing. You have the skill to succeed as a professional. Don't stop!
Just going to add to the pile of glowing comments you've already earned: this was wonderful. I hope we'll get to see many more of your adventures on your journey as a Magic player and as a filmmaker!
As a film maker and a Yugioh Player this video hits so much at home. You made a really great story, we need more cinematic videos about card games like this one
Super sick, I hope to see more Magic content from you!!
One quick note: I really liked how you explained some things, like the overall cardpool versus deck size, but I think you could try to break things down a bit better for a non-Magic viewer. For example, the concept of lands can be kind of weird for people who don't play, or the concepts of card advantage or why the Lightning Axe was the perfect draw. Again, super loved your video and I hope to see more!!
Thanks! Yeah I was trying to find the balance between making it understandable for non-magic players yet still interesting for someone who plays the game. As for more magic content in the future, that’s always a possibility but my channel’s more focused on the filmmaking/editing side of things. You can definitely expect more videos with this same style to it though!
@12brickstudios Ooh! I like that concept of a channel. I do believe that tying magic into that could definitely keep pushing you. On numbers alone, you will have an audience for sure.
What incredible studio quality editing and filming here.
Dude you are going places. You clearly have the drive.
17th out of 62 is impressive on your first time. You've got a knack. don't give up some people don't accomplish that for years. I've been playing since 2007 and finally took it serious this year. I've been to 3 RCs now this year. two for modern in Canada and even one for pioneer in the USA.
i think this got recommended to me because of magic the gathering, but your film making (writing, editing, directing, animation, acting, photography, so on, etc) is so good. can’t wait to see what stories you make next
This is one of if not THEE BEST vlog style video of a magic event I’ve ever seen. Gotta make a series outta this, I’m itching to see your under dog story 💪
That judge who signs you in is the same who helped me out at my local game store's Pioneer event this summer! Haha, fun to see some local MTG content. Beautifully produced and edited video, you should be proud!
Great video man! We need more creators like you in the Magic space, look forward to seeing the part 2!
Great editing, storytelling and video production overall. You're good at this. Keep going!
From a new subscriber :)
The editing is incredibly good for a small production like this. Keep up the good work!
This is the greatest video I have watched this year. Your craftsmenship is beautiful, any lego creator has to be committed to wonder, patience and craft, and that SHINES through this. I was addicted, please continue making these styles of video, you have no idea how special you are.
thank you so much! Yes definitely going to keep making videos like this, I have some fun things planned for the future!
Terrific shots. Shoutout to the camera man and editor!
Me myself and I haha, I film and edit everything (aside from a few shots)
Super impressed by your work, even moreso after realizing how young you were. As a judge I see RCQs as pretty typical events but it's good to recognize that they can mean a lot to different people. I still remember the first competitive events I played in too.
Thank goodness for the CZcams algorithm (for once). Phenomenal editing, staggering storytelling, super exciting to see you grow.
Production quality is insane on this, very cool vid! Excited to see more!
I started playing in 2014 when I was 14. Im now 23 and haven't touched the game in a few years (partly due to college and covid, and also because of Hasbro / WOTCs direction with the game. It isnt what it used to be but I do miss it a little. I watched people come and go at my local game store over the many many years I played and now Im one of them...
This is really cool dude! Can see how hard you worked on this
what an awesome video holy moly ! the quality is amazing. I love the music you choosed. Keep up the great work !!!
Nice job on the video! Have fun and good draws on your Magic journey.
I played Magic for 20 years and loved it. Playing in real life tournaments are so much fun. While I no longer play, I really get that itch every 5-6 months to get back into it... but I have to convince myself not to. While I think Magic is one of the greatest games ever conceived, it's just too expensive to keep up with.
2:00 was about to stop watching but then saw this mans playing one of my favorite decks.
Now I'm hookied.
Haha love this
Amazing video! You were my inspiration for me to document my own RCQ experience. Your editing and storytelling was godlike
Thanks! Haha I think your video actually popped up in my feed the other day, glad I was able to inspire you to make a video of your own!
As someone that's been doing this accross multiple card games for years welcome to the grind. I can't wait to see the follow up.
"That's slightly more affordable...and the cheapest one." Nailed it!
I play other card games (never magic) and this was such a good video! Great pacing, and great music, had me entertained the whole time! Thanks for 6 minutes of awesomeness.
My guy just going to regionals and made a freaking movie out of it 😭
I did not except this, please keep up the good work, you are amazing!
Arlo, really good video. Awesome use of music and you've cracked the storytelling framework. It's cool to see you finding your groove, keep at it
Wow. This is easily the best cinematography i have ever seen in a mtg video! Wonderful Job!
Wow! Great video production. In terms of mtg content, this surpasses most. Subscribed!
PS. Cardboard is fickle. Spend your money on video stuff, you’re really good at it 😉
This was awesome..my only complaint is that it wasn't longer. Would have been cool to follow along on your research and what you learned and Maybe why your decklist. Either way, being left wanting more is never a bad thing lol subbed!
yah printing out opponents possible decks and doing Practice play is nuts to me but how else to do it lol
This video was great, I hope to see more MTG content from you in the future. The space in in need for creators with strong story telling!
This is so well edited! Great video and I'm sure this channel will grow quickly with this level of quality
Bro you seriously did not make a stop motion animation to replace the part you forgot to film. That's just flexing. Mad props, and I hope to see future videos from you.
Wow. Subscribed. Love the filming and production. Came for the magic stayed for the quality.
Beautifully made video and congrats on the tournament!
So this is the first video I've ever seen of yours and I expected this channel to be a lot bigger considering how good that was! I'm from South Africa and I'm not sure how many international viewers you have right now, but keep putting out content this great and you will absolutely blow up.
If I had the finances, I'd definitely join your Patreon - As someone one day looking to do their own content, the music gripped me! 🤯 Really well done on the total package here 👏🏻
Thank you! Definitely going to keep making videos, lot of fun ideas planned.
I quit playing magic about two years ago, but very glad to see you're enjoying yourself, man. Your editing is insane, you're very skilled, and I wish you lots of success.
OMGGGGGG , THE EDITING , THE SHOTS, THE LEGO STOP MOTION EVERYTHING. YOU DID GREAT AND YOU DID REALLY GOOD FOR YOUR FRIST TIME PLAYING MTG!! :>>>>
Beautifully made video, the production quality in this is insanely good. Well done!
This brings back great memories for me. It took me a couple years and a lot of practice to win my first high level tournament. My first time on mtggoldfish and scg i thought i was top dog. Keep up the great work and film making, everyone watching loves magic so just going over what happened is entertaining enough
incredible vid, I've been to many rcq's and have almost never seen one with that many people, hope you keep chasing it, there's really nothing like the rcq grind.
Awesome editing GG, good luck on your next tournaments
My man, this is one heck of a video!! The production is incredible and the deck you chose is absolutely top tier in Pioneer. I play a Golgari Lotleth mill deck and had to modify the deck to run 4x Cavalier of Thorns in the main board specifically for your deck's Arclight Phoenix. If you can drop the Ledger Shredder on curve and it lives, it can eat the removal so that your Arclights can go in for the win. It's an annoying deck whether on paper or on Arena. Best of luck in 2024!!
What in the actual heck. Great editing. Best of luck on your goals!
Godlike production! Good luck on your next championship!
Production quality was next level man, great work
This was really well done man, keep it up, you’re on to something
I hope your channel b lows up and you get more recognition because your video making and editing skills are awesome. The lego edit for the missing footage was perfect.
This short video is really insane. Great work.
Great vid!! Keep going on your Magic journey!!
Kudos to you! The story was engaging to me on 2 parts, how it was told and how it was visually appealing!
This was incredible! I'm glad to see someone bring flair and style to documenting the competitive side of MTG. I see it a lot with other games and have always wanted to see it with Magic.
THIS WAS PUT TOGETHER SO GOOD!!
I don’t even collect or play MTG but great vid!! 🎉
please post soon I WANNA SEE THIS. I am in edmonton and thinking of saving up to build a mid level deck and see how it goes man. you inspired me!!! Keep pushing, and also, take your time, make sure to think about you actions. (tips to myself mostly)
Do it!
I Will!! Making my deck on arena and see if it works, and i could change it. I might go Izzit phoenix too! Is there any other cheep decks you saw???@@ArloPedersen
I don't play MTG but I was hooked! This video was utterly incredible man. Production quality and narrative flow was amazing, please make more like this
Genuinely a really well made video with a ton of style to it! Keep it up!
Dude your editing is top tier! Awesome video man keep going!
Wow! The effort put into this video was phenomenal! Looking forward to another Mtg video!
This was an amazing production bro! MTG is such a great game.......enjoy the journey.
5:28 bro trusted the heart of the cards 💀
AMAZING. This is so high quality, engaging, and fun.
dude i was hooked in the whole time. so creative!!! awesome work
Yoo, this video is actually very high production level. You earned yourself a new subscriber, keep up the work!
Amazing video, the edits are perfect. Continue man
It's truly a phenomenal video. I live the editing, creative shots, and choice of music!
Very nice! Glad you had a positive experience from your first RCQ!
Hey man, really well done video. Excellent production. Good luck in the next one!
BRO WTF THIS IS BEYOND TOP TIER PRODUCTION QUALITY. SIMPLY AMAZING MICRO DOCUMENTARY ON YOUR PASSION. TOTAL RESPECT ❤
Amazing work! This reminded me of my first torunaments also, thanks for bringing the feeling back
Well done. Great production value. Basically a dramatized version of what grinders do
great video dude seriously. definitely deserve WAAAAAAY more than 3k subs wtf, this felt like a BIG youtuber production
Man, the editing and the camerawork are something else, this guy’s got real talent both with the game and with filmmaking
Your editting for this was amazing. The stop go animation on the lego recreate was an amazing added bonus.
Clicked because of MTG, subbed for the quality. Keep up the great work man!
Awesome video quality and storytelling.
And yes, people should play mtg competitive scenario at least once to try. It feels awesome and the pressure is real hahahah
Unreal video mate! Really well done! Looking forward to part two :)
Well done! I first thought that that is an ad from WotC. Beautifully filmed
that video is dope. editing, pacing, storytelling. keep it up ! there is a huge need for magic content that isnt decktechs or people playing commander....
Video start : This is the most complex card game
Me: Yu-Gi-Oh! ...
Your editing skills are top notch, that lego scene was insane. Subbed!
Amazing video! We wish you the best of luck at your next tournament!
Would love to partner with you guys on a potential sequel!
Great editing and video man!! Keep it up
I love your editing and story telling style. This video is awesome
Wow! you made that VERY interesting, and coming from someone who has played magic, that is pretty hard to do!
great job!
What an amazing video! 17th on your first "big" event is excellent, I don't play MtG much since I found Flesh & Blood 2.5 years ago (talk about yet another awesome & complex TCG!), but having started to play in 1996 and left in 2004 coming back on 2019 after a long hiatus and I totally relate to this, I also picked up a Modern Izzet deck (Izzet Blitz/Prowess) back then because of being the cheapest & because I love the style, fast Izzet tempo decks are great, exciting and teach a lot about MtG while providing a competitive edge meaning you can win almost any match with them!
Keep it up! You'll go far! Best of luck for your future!
PS - CZcams algorithm brought this to my attention, you earned a subscriber here (the Lego animation was pretty sick too), I want to follow your journey ;)
Beautiful editing and overall production! Nice work.
The editing and production on this video is staggering. definitely appreciate such high quality content
Production and editing was out of this world 9/10. The storytelling and pacing left a lot to be desired 3/10. Keep it up dude; you're talented.
