My ms311 runs like a beast. Surprising how powerful it is. We cut 10 cords per year, and it's been going 4 years with zero out of pocket except new chain, gas & oil.
Thank you, i recently cooked my MS391 and the local Sthil dealer won't touch it with the same excuse, "you must have forgot the oil". It went exactly as you described, over reved ran hot and cooked.
I fixed my 391 recently What I found out on these when the rings seat in they run lean . And why they run lean is the upper transfers are too small probably for emissions. So at full throttle operation the charge can't get out fast enough from the upper transfers.
I have a MS 391 it is has made me a lot of money and I have never had a problem! But my saws I bought in 2007 I no it is different than the new ms 391 my friend just bought a brand new one recommended by me I didn’t know that they are having problems. I will have to look in to for him thanks for the video never would have known they were having problems.
Just take the E clip off clutch drum then pull off the clutch drum. It is left hand thread on the clutch . 19 mm socket I use a 1/4 - 3/8 dr battery powered impact wrench.
If its running lean then adjust the damn thing to run Richer. Pull the plastic stops out of the adjustment screws and adjust the high side at full throttle until it 4 strokes then back off a 1/4 turn
In my experience working with saws, Stihl makes great saws. But they also make less great saws. For anyone looking to buy a Stihl saw, do your research before you buy!! Stihl makes two grades of saw, Home Owner grade and Professional grade. Don't go by what the dealer tells you necessarily. They will sell you a Home Owner grade and tell you "this thing can work all day everyday blablablabla". That being said, learn to use a saw. Don't be arrogant. Ask those with experience, do your research. Any piece of equipment can last long enough with good use and care. Don't abuse your equipment.
Hi I've got a 2017 ms391 never had any issues really good saw, only modification I've done is put a rimm sprocket conversion on it and run it with a 16inch bar and full chisel chain cuts as good as my ms 362.
Funny. I have a 311 with 25" bar. Runs like a top. Got about 8 gallons of fuel through it. Had a echo cs 590. Knew others that had them to. Saw was a cutting sob. But I went through 4 of them. Didn't even get a gallon of fuel between the first three. Last one lasted about 2 gallons of fuel before it died. Dealer had to replace the carb and coil. Had it for three months to get echo to cover the repair costs. That's when I got the M's 311 and a ms 180. So far they haven't let me down once. Guess I'm just lucky so far. Ya got me worried now though.
My ms391 had a leaking muffler seal. Imo that leak is leading them to blow up. I fixed mine so far no problems. I run it no dif than my 064, 661,or 880. Fix the muffler leak and shes a great little power saw.
Have over 60 gallons of fuel through my ms391 no issues.Several of my friends have bought them also been running them for several years with no problems.Mine does have the square snap on air filter instead of the twist on not sure what the difference is never seen the twist on version in person.
I've got a older version of the ms 391, carb looks a bit revised here. Anyways, it's been a very cooperative saw overall, has a fairly reasonable amount of power. I'd estimate it had 400-500 hours on it over 14 years before requiring a new coil. Somewhat difficult to service and find genuine parts for I'm finding.
The 590 echo is a rill good saw i got a still 311 now it a good saw but like all of them they will mess up i am sucking air between the cab and the head so i got to fix that hopefully it fixes my still 311 going to replace all of it between
I bought MS311 tht's a beast I love it. And 391 should be just bigger piston and cylinder. I don't believe you. Only explaination I have is that you installed too big bar (recommended 16" tp 20") and ran it too hard as brand new without breaking it in so you basically broke it down...
My 311 just blew up yesterday. 20-in bar and good fuel. I'm cutting firewood and only run it for 20 minutes then splitting with a mail. I have no idea why it blew.
@@joshuaderstine4133 Many possibilities. Cold seasure, bad A/F ratio, overrevving, overheating, bad oil and list goes on and on... And one more bad thing that people do is pushing the saw in wood forcing it to run too hard, by doing that you cut much slower, overheating the engine and clutch... There are many mistakes people do to their equipment not just two strokes but all...
I dont know what you guys are talking about, I have 3 of them and they all rock everyday all day long on the job no issues unless ya want to talk about the muffler keeps coming loose on them. Its a great saw I dont care what any of you say, I make a great living off my 391's. I have bigger saws but these are my mainstays.
I have a brand new one I bought from the dealer for $75 because the owner had it only a few months and they told him it was his fault that the cylinder was scored and ruined. He just left it there and they sold it to me. Has brand new, unused chain and bar on it. Planning to rebuild it but I hope it doesn't do the same to me. Trying to decide whether to pay big bucks for OEM or use aftermarket parts...
I would not put too much money into the saw. Because ms 391 -311 saws can be problematic and some ms 391s run along time I would try to get a aftermarket cylinder. I would also check the crank bearings they have plastic cage bearings. Check the Dukes Saw Salvage shop online the bearings. Also change the spark plug those bosch sparkplugs might be what makes the coils go bad. I believe the coils are one reason why the pistons score up because of detonation. I had 3 coils go bad and used a NGK spark plug BPMR7A and the saw has had no problems.
@@kennytheguitarfanatic054 Any suggestions on aftermarket cylinder piston kit? Some have reviews saying they had to be modified. The OEM ones are $300, which is crazy. I will definitely go ahead and change the sparkplugs. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I don't know if you're talking about them or complaining about them which one is better and which one is more difficult to work on but in the next video just stay focused on the thing at hand when your mind keeps on going to 2 chainsaws and the problem with one compared to which one's better.
should have simply tuned the carb and ran it stock. (will run reliably for years) people modifying saws not knowing what they are doing. ms 391 is a light and powerful work saw - not a race saw
@@kennytheguitarfanatic054 it’s been good haven’t done anything to it I always cut with a sharp chain so it probably don’t work that hard compared to others but still have me nervous with these videos good info fir sure though thanks
700-800 $ for my ms391 new and it stalls out after about 15 minutes of running. It doesn’t start up again for another 10 or 20 minutes until it cools down.
Sounds like the coil. I have found the coils are defective out of the box. Don't run it like that it will cause detonation and burn a hole in the piston.
They really are not bad and significantly better than that crapsman. How do you manage to destroy a 391? I know tree companies that use the to hell and back
A friend has a 391 with 20” bar, that was given to him new. It’s never run properly. It starts ok but bogs on every cut and will not idle. And yes, he knows how to adjust a carb. He’s doing his tickets now and every training/assessment day, he’s borrowing a friends MS261 or my 550XP. Even as a freebie, the MS391 isn’t worth the time.
Have had my Ms 391 for a few years, cut down and cut up many of oak trees here in texas. Runs great never have any problems!

Mine blew after 2 years. I had it rebuilt, ran a tank through it and pulled the muffler and it's scoring already
Probably a good idea to run 40:1 mix in these strato saws.
Any idea how to get the screws/bolts for the exhaust ? Where to Had one rattle loose
That is what I run in all my saws including big ported saws! Never have ever had a problem it is cheaper to change a plug than blow the motor.
Run Castrop POWER1 RACING 2T not Stihl junk oil and it will run for 30 years...
Have to say I have had mine for 5-6 years. Cut many of many large down. Knock on wood, it’s been a great saw
