Such a Missed opportunity, should have had the Minutemen fix the Constitution and use it to broadside the Prydwen.

I sided with the robots because
A. Yeah, Ironsides kills, but only because he is fired upon first, and even then he says to use lethal force when strictly necessary
B. Because a bunch of robots pretending to be 17th century naval captains in a rocket boat is freaking cool.

@neilsonhans4763 when I say "hates" I mean the only thing she has a verbal que that isn't excited agreement is when you steal something. Ada doesn't have standard companion emotional levels, you do her quest as dlc and that's it. But she runs the mechanist factory and in currently taking Hancock with me to slaughter all the raiders in nuke world.

in the fallout world, the us attacks, occupies then eventually annexes canada. and right up to the nukes dropping the canadians were still resisting via sabatose and guerrilla resistance.

My reason to side with the robots was as easy as:

I had many reasons. 1 - the scavengers told me to gtfo their lawn just as I passed by, while the robots welcomed me; 2 - the scavengers attacked me while I was onboard; 3 - my son is a robot, my bff is a robot, my butler is a robot and I work freeing robots, so I'm a big fat robot lover alright.

If we're being technical, the USS Constitution is a commissioned ship in the Navy, meaning Ironsides is the captain of a ship in the US Navy, technically speaking Ironsides is all that's left of the US Navy and may technically be the commander of all "US forces"
Also as the president is dead and no new one has been appointed in the line of succession would he not also be the president of United States

Still I did like this quest. It also left a burning question. How did the robots gain access to DMV and Armed Service records? Is there some EMP hardened mainframe out there with a transceiver of the same?

Perhaps it was accessed through the National Park Services network?
EMP only temporarily knocks out devices, and depending on location, type of device, and a number of other factors, they may still function without repairs after the EMP has passed. I assume in a civilization that has such a preoccupation with nuclear power and weapons that many systems would be hardened against EMP. But that's merely a guess, even if it's backed up by the number of still-operating computers in the Fallout world.
Most government networks don't necessarily cross paths, but there is still the matter of if any mainframes survived the EMP from the nukes in the first place.
Robots only have a finite memory capacity. We know The Institute likely had surviving hardware given the presence of it in older sections of the complex, but I know of no college or university networks that connect to state run mainframes directly. It's all a puzzle really.
Speaking of EMP from nukes, wouldn't the destruction of The Institute create a strong EMP wave in the local area around it? Many a computer would likely be out of commission without safety measures.
The “scavengers” are just raiders with extra steps. Meanwhile Captain Ironsides has you repair the ship so it can begin is voyage again and even gives you a sweet hat for helping him, also caps.
So yes Captain Ironsides forever.

Would depend how you're role playing. If you're a dedicated BOS soldier, you may see these robots as a potential danger to humanity. They're gaining independent thought and could eventually rise beyond all their programming, viewing the Wastelanders as their true enemy. Ironsides already reprograms robots to serve his purposes so amassing an army of loyal robots isn't improbable. Very least, no true BOS soldier would choose robots over humanity.

I value these robots mor than synths. They are more human to me than a synth will ever be.
Well synth's and robots are different for one thing the synth's are prettier.
Synths are indistinguishable from humans save for the one chip inside them.
Them being able to be turned off can just be put down to hypnosis. It's a real thing. You can "program" a human into responding to certain stimulus.
People with PTSD who have panic attacks from a sound or smell are effectively hypnotized to react that way.

Thats troublesome because Ironsides may represent what the good the old Commonwealth once was but its not genuine. It was the past and expecting the scavengers to understand is wrong... the scavengers are what they are: people just trying to get by in this day and age. Ironsides has a right to defend... however, do think what would have happened if Ironsides makes it to the sea? Eventually (assuming they can make it) someday they will come across another broken part of the world and hold his old ideals on these people and its your responsibility for wasting time and resources to take away from the people's potential.

Out of all the times I’ve played this quest and heard other people talk about it, I somehow had no clue until now that you could visit Ironsides and his crew after they crash into the skyscraper
i see no dilemma. do you side with the nice robots with their humble, positive and amusing attitude? or do you side with the people that almost killed you and are practically betraying diamond city and in the end even you?

I wish the Constitution could be a settlemet or you could send it to a settlement of your choice, that way you could hang out with Ironsides even though he's not a companion.
I think siding with Ironsides is more benevolent. He might be a robot but he is sentient, much like Codsworth, Ada, and Nick, all of whom are also trustworthy and good. Plus Ironsides likely really does want to defend the Eastern coast while the scavengers will only care about themselves and are not going to spare you even if you side with them while Ironsides only attacks if you betray them

While Cait may have interesting dialogue about this, I found Preston to be more fun. He was for the whole "congressional army" thing.
I personally agree with those who wanted a Minutemen ending on this quest. Preston could've called the Minutemen from the Castle, fighting through the scavengers, then guarding the ship. Eventually guiding it correctly to the Atlantic.
technically speaking, all they would need to do is give the Constitution a new Surgeon and maybe a box of robot parts.The Surgeon could fix the Bosun, who would then fix the ship and they would probably be able to continue face-tanking skyscrapers all the way to the Atlantic.

I just wanna appreciate the delivery of this response.
In my first encounter with this quest in full, I sided with the Scavengers on account of they are human and the robot are not, and theres good loot on that boat. I gotta tell you Ive never been more angry at an NPC in my life than when Mandy backstabbed me.
Fun fact about "Old Ironsides" her exceptionally thick hull as you describe it wasn't the only reason that cannons had trouble piercing the hull of the Constitution. The Constitution's hull was made by layering hard and soft woods, which created an effect like some modern day body armors. I'm not sure if the constitution was the first to use this construction method but it wasn't common at the time.
That's pretty fascinating. I wonder if they did any ballistics tests for the materials back then.
Justin David I watched a documentary way back when that said that the more were these old school Chinese sailing ships that had fortified front ends to ram the other ship. If I recall they fortified it in a similar way. Wood layering with a metal plate on the front. And this was like way way way back when they were still one of the only countries with gun powder.
Now doing my homework. The reason she got the nickname "Old Ironsides". Is her encounter and victory against the HMS Guerriere. During the battle. The Constitution fired and struck the Guerriere's mizzenmast and reduced maneuverability of the British Warship because of it dragging in the water. The Guerriere unable to maneuver ends up crashing right into the side of the Constitution. Rigging of both ships become tangled and Guerriere's bow gun in effective range. Fires. Though only destroying the Captain's Quarters. Both ships' Captains did an order for boarding but do to the heavy seas. Neither could board the other effectively.
Through the course of the battle. Both ships start to twist and were now broad side one another. The Constitution fires a few more broadsides into the British ship causing more heavy damage. The waves and weather finally ripped both ships apart. Causing the masts of the Guerriere to collapse. Basically making the Guerriere a floating hulk of a mess. So in turn suffering a third of her crew loses to death and wounding. The British surrender.
The Captain of the Constitution did surprise the British with the Constitution's strong broadside and sailing ability. That the British guns could not punch through the hull of the American Warship. It was stated that an American sailor cried out, "Huzzah! Her sides are made of Iron!" That is where the old girl got her nickname "Old Ironsides".
As for the HMS Guerriere after this fight. Well, the ship was so badly beaten that she was impossible to tow back to port. So the American Captain ordered the British crew to be taken on board and the ship burned. On making it back to homeport. The crew of the USS Constitution found out word spread rather fast of their battle and were hailed as heroes.

These materials in this construction for the hull of the Constitution as well as her unique and robust framing made her one tough ship and could've easily outclassed frigates of her class.
Imagine if they made it out of Australian Buloke or Brazilian Ipe.

I feel ironside is the right call for 2 major reasons. One the characters of the robots while altered are noble and non threatening. And second being betrayed. That's always a good way to die to the soul survivor lol
Fun Fact: the wood the constitution is made from is Southern Live Oak. It is an extremely dense wood and very hard to work with. Funny tales of the old lumberjacks steel axes glinting with sparks when they were chopping down Live Oak.

I just stumbled into this quest outta the blue this afternoon and had an absolute blast. What a treat it was, I sided with the robots because I saw those rockets strapped to the ship and knew instantly I was dedicated to getting this thing flying if at all possible. Job done lol :)

Newer Broom Heh. While it could be argued that the average raider won’t know who you are or have heard of your exploits, it does amaze me how willing they are to take on someone who so obviously outguns them!
JosieJOK yeah, although sometimes, I wish that Bethesda made it so the raiders and gunners "evolved" with the player and got tougher as you leveled up. Getting more advanced armor and weapons, and eventually they get actual power armor. Would make the game much more fun.

Newer Broom - you basically just described what they tried to do with Oblivion, and it was pretty awful. Although that may have been more to do with how you could actually gimp yourself by leveling up too frequently because of how the game handled player stat increases.

On the subject of morality, I believe the robots are in the right. They just want to be left alone, they have not attacked, only defended themselves. When considering Codsworth, Curie, KL-E-O, P.A.M., or the robots of Grey Garden: I believe many robots left active for 200 years have become self aware. Maybe not truly people like Gen 3 Synths, but AI none the less. And to have a group of raiders who sell to towns, scavengers, attack 17 times is just over agressive jerks who might wipe out my lovely Grey Garden next. Scavengers bad, Ironsides good.

If synths can be people, then robots can be as well. I can't kill ironsides and never have.
I was thinking the same thing only more in the context of my playthrough being a railroad agent, and applying the values of my role-play would make the decision clear. If I were doing a BoS playthrough it might be a different story.
Well it's a question of what defines a man? The conflict with the Institute vs the Railroad really is one where the Institute says: "We built them, they are machines meant to service us". While the Railroad says: "They're sapient beings with their own thoughts and desires, and that's enough to warrant personhood and freedom".
The interesting question for me is the Robots. We see time and time again in the Fallout Universe robots that have achieved Sapience. Have in fact transcended into True AI really. From ED-E in the Mojave, to Codsworth and CVRIE in Fallout 4. And Ironsides would be one of them as well. He CHOSE to overcome his own initial programming, chose to adopt a lifestyle he believed in, and chose his own goals and purpose, ideals and culture.
The problem for me is Bethesda really swerves that question outside of Gen 3 Synths because of CVRIE. Even though as a robot she definitely showing such sapience and desires like Ironsides does. Choosing her own fate, to bypass or negate her programming, even her own desires to leave her post and explore the world... the game's script after Memory Interrupted, when you put her in a Gen 3 Synth Body tries to act like the robot CVRIE didn't have those things. That it was only after being turned into a Synth that she had any glimmer of emotion, desires, goals, independence, etc.
It's a really odd thing. I'm not sure if it was just a left hand not telling the right what it was doing storyline and thematically, or if it was a case of just some blindness to the questions they were bringing up and why it wouldn't apply to Robots with similar traits.
@@hitomisalazar4073 in my personal opinion and observations it seems like robots get more personality and stuff as they get older. Like there are some robots out there who are completely self reliant and know exactly what's happening... Like that assultron in Goodneighbor. Another example is Curie like you mentioned. Or even the bartender in the third rail. I highly doubt someone programed him to be a sketchy mob guy. Just seems alot of robots developed their own ideas and changed from their former programing... Or at least added on to it. Just my thoughts
People should side with Ironsides for the simple fact that he represents the good that America once was. He has honor, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics just like any good military commander would have so helping him preserves good qualities of the Fallout version of America.

I would side with Ironsides. His craziness is charming and quirky and he doesn't want to hurt humans (mostly). He's like magical unicorn zebra in a herd of small dull gray horses, he just brings a smile to my face and for some reason I want to see him succeed regardless of if it's useful, logical, or if he's human enough or not. He's just plain fun and I'll take happiness over caps whenever possible in such a bleak world.
There's a forest in Indiana that is set aside strictly for use in repairing The Constitution. It was planted in the 60s and has been very well managed ever since. I saw The Constitution from a distance years ago, and I would love to go on board one day.
I think its really cute how the Protectons mention that they must protect the Constitution. Of course, it refers to the document, not the ship. :P

The scavengers never sat right with me and glad this just reinforces my leaning towards Ironsides. Also i love the history lesson again on the U.S.S. *What I think is the most beneficial option:*
1. Get the parts needed for the ship
2. Go to the scavengers, ask Mandy for the 500 caps, then change your mind, causing them to open fire on you.
3. Launch the ship as normal. Scavengers dealt with, mission success, your pockets are full with caps, and everyone's happy... or well... dead.
I like to think given the option, the Ironsides would ally with the Minutemen, in fact, the U.S.S Consitution could operate as the Minutemen's own Predwyn!

Many missed opportunity's are present within this game. Reprogramming Liberty Prime for the Minutemen and attacking the Brotherhood, making more 'Director' choices with the institute, destroying the main factions with the Nuka-World raiders, challenging Elder Maxon to the title of Elder... *Sigh* The list goes on. ;(
