"Laid down mines". I had like 70 mines on one of my more explosive characters. I dropped them all at the entrance to the park and shot swan, then shot the mine when he got closer. My frame rate died, but swan landed somewhere near Salem.
@Maddox Gaming Regular mines - I may have exaggerated slightly, but I couldn't find Swan after he disappeared and through the fire and the flames I saw him get ragdolled off up into the sky.

I fat-manned him at level 10. He didn’t Activate when I went to park street at first but I came during the freedom trail so I had to kill him. Panicked and let loose a mini nuke (he survives) then I snipe him with my hunting rifle and he died

I killed swan on my first game in the first 2 hours, in had no idea he was there, but when he ran at me he stepped on a car and he glitched about 30 feet in the air and died. Free loot

@He-Man I've only been once, summer 2019. It was beautiful with all the green grass and trees and squirrels, but it was H U M I D. We took the subway at Park Street Station and that was probably the worst part of the experience, it was unbearably hot underground and it stank like something died.

I never noticed the warning signs on my first playtrough and just walked there all willy-nilly. Thanks to my (unhealthy) habit of spamming the V.A.T.S button to scan for enemies I picked up Svann from a pretty far distance. Not knowing what the hell it was, and judging by the big skull icon next to his name, I decided it to be best to just leave it alone.
Fast forwards about 40 levels and I return to the common, and decide to shoot the trash pile for sh*ts and giggles with a handgun. The results were ugly.

My first encounter with swan at lvl 9 wasn't so bad, killed him pretty easily with a minigun, but my first encounter with a sentry bot at lvl 9 gave me PTSD.

Yeah when I fought that one in the undercroft of the castle it gave me serious problems because I suck at the game and only had Nick Valentine with me, equipped with a pipe .44! Not a great situation and it took me ages to kill him because I didn’t have hacking perks either!

The problem is mostly the shadow distance (besides poor optimisation), turn it to low. I get 60fps on 4k Ultra (except shadows) on my 980ti (at 1350mhz)

Doesn't matter if you have a high end card, it'll lag downtown because of bad game optimization caused by shadows and sometimes godrays. There are mods that control shadows dynamically, helping to lessen this issue. Other solution is setting shadows to low, which Oxhorn probably did, as the shadows look very faded in his game.
One of my friends pranked next and simply went. “Hey shoot the thing in the middle of the pond”. I was quite traumatized
My brother is considering playing it for the first time. Should tell him that Boston Commons has the best weapons and armor and you can get to it relatively early in the game.

I always assumed the note he wrote saying "YOU ARE SWANN" was his last ditch attempt to retain his humanity and sanity by reminding himself who he was/is with what little intelligence he had left but as he degenerated further because of the FEV he started living in the actual pond, like a swan, out of confusion over what the note meant as his mind deteriorated and he evolved into a behemoth. Probably waking up everyday on that mattress and seeing that note and thinking "I am Swann." before going about his day shambling around then questioning it and being confused by it more and more everyday. Almost like dementia. Poor bastard. All that because of some cigarettes.

I remember the first time I played fallout and I was a total noob, didn't watch any videos or tips on the game. On my way to the Nick Valentine's mission I had recently gotten the walk through water without radiation perk so I wanted to try it by jumping into the pond instead of walking around it to get to the mission, little did I know that I had jumped right next to the swan and nearly had a heart attack when it jumped out at me and destroyed me...

That Raider note you found explains an unexpected, yet hilarious, occurrence I experienced just a couple of days ago, in this very area. Instead of taking my usual route to the Commons, I decided to take the northernmost route that leads directly to it from Diamond City. Upon doing so, I noticed that _this_ route makes it way easier to sneak past Swan in early levels. When I rounded the corner at the street that leads to the Subway station, from the corner of my eye I spotted a lone Raider, cautiously trying sneaking his way across the park's interior. At first, I was going to attack him. As I feel it's my sworn duty as a decent person to hunt down & kill all the Raiders I come across. But then, I noticed the way he was moving. He wasn't just low to the ground, sneaking his way across the park, he was acting as though he was in combat with something. Hiding behind trees & debris, creeping with his gun at the ready, etc. Tracing his intended path with my weapon, I realized the dude was attempting to make a run on Swan! I thought to myself "Is this dumbass really doing what I *think* he's about to do?! Oh, this is gonna be good." Swan hadn't noticed the guy yet, and neither of them had noticed Me, so I targeted the Raider with VATS, just to get a feel for what he might've been armed with. He was wearing a harness, wore little armor to speak of, and was armed with nothing more than a Pipe Pistol. The Raider creeps closer. The mound of Swan Boat debris in the middle of the pond, slowly turns toward him. Out of nowhere, the Raider charges the pond, firing madly with his pistol. Swan pops up out of the water, screaming his own name. The Raider fires while falling back to a nearby tree, and uses it as cover. The Behemoth charges from the pond, hurling a huge rock at the Raider, which hits the Raider square in the face as he's peeking out from behind the tree, allowing Swan to close the distance. Once on top of him, Swan stomps the ground, shaking the Raider free from the cover provided by the tree. The Raider attempts to circle to Swan's right side. Swan brings down his anchor, stopping him in his tracks. The Raider, on his last legs by now, uses a Stimpak, but to no avail. Swan takes a final swing with his anchor, catching the Raider full on. And I lie to you not, when Swan hit the Raider with that last swing of his anchor, the Raider literally flew from where he was in the park, all the way to the goddamned Combat Zone. Hilarious.

Lamar Davis No, it's right up the street from the Commons. Depending on which way you enter the area, namely from the street where the little bus stop bench is on the corner, there's an intersection that leads to a Super Mutant encampment if you go straight ahead(you'll likely see a random Mutant walking back & forth on a ramp off in the distance), and the Combat Zone when you turn right. You'll know it, due to the Raiders hanging out on the scaffolding, who will attack you if they see you. Swan knocked that Raider from the park, past those guys, all the way to the Combat Zone.

My first encounter with Swan was definitely the most memorable. Without realizing at first what Swan really was (aside from being a huge Behemoth), I tried my best to defend myself from it. Completely forgetting about my perks in the heat of the battle, I accidentally activated my Pacify... which, to my biggest surprise, actually worked. After since then, I literally became best buddies with Swan and I needed no more companions for that playthrough.
Meanwhile I used some mods already when I first met him, it was nothing that would be too much of a game changer aside from one specific mod: a companion framework that allowed more customization and option for companions. That allowed me to basically treat Swan as a regular companion. Heck, for a short period of time, he became the guardian of my settlement I was working on.
Even though it wasn't my first playthrough, it was definitely a memorable one for sure.

I remember killing it an extremely low level (through tons of attempts) and getting the furious power fist and absolutely destroying my enemies. I’m glad I stumbled upon it.
Probably due to frame rate issues when you're downtown, but Boston Common would have been an awesome settlement reward for clearing out Swann.

I typically leave Swan alone, as imo he adds more depth to the world, and I pity his characters story. All in all I enjoy knowing that, though I could very well kill him, he defends his home; The Boston Commons from intruders. He doesn't bother anyone until they invade his pond.

First time I killed Swan, I went in preety confident about my odds. I was wrong about my odds. Unable to fast travel away, I did the next best thing. I popped a vertibird signal grenade for evacuation via BoS. I ran around the common until the bird arrived. Swan killed the pilot. But thankfully I had control of the mini gun and swan was directly infront of me. I pulled the trigger and laid into him and his health dropped faster than a suit of power armor falling off off trinity tower.
It would have been interesting to have giant, mutated Canada geese as critters. You wouldn't even have to expose them to FEV, they're already seething masses of anger and hatred as is.
The FEV would just need to make them slightly more aggressive and stronger.

Swann's story (I use his own spelling of his name, per his own note) reflects and is a reference to, Charlie Gordon in "Flowers for Algernon"(1958, Daniel Keyes), where a mentally handicapped janitor is experimented on, his intelligence increases, and eventually falls again.

I was thinking the same thing when i seen the notes
When I first found Swan on my first play through I discovered a cheese I do on every play through. Going to the Metro Tunnel entrance you use to get to the Vault, sitting inside will keep him constantly running at you. His head will clip through the wall to be shot at, he can’t reach with a melee, and when he throws rocks it will hit the wall doing no damage(rarely it will hit you inside, so quick saves are key).
I’ve done this cheese on every play through I’ve done.

I ran straight through and started panicking when he started laughing. Swan busts through the surface of the water and releases the most bone-chilling war cry. I ran away screaming after shooting him twice with a 10mm pistol.

Always thought the Swan was a Flowers for Algernon Easter egg. A Janitor is given a super serum that makes him grow smarter. Becomes so smart that he is even accepted into the research team experimenting on him. At the height of his brilliance, he is forced to face the horror of slowly degrading to even less than he was before. In the end, his newfound intellect serves only to magnify his comprehension and fear of his fate as he struggles in vain to resist it.

This is exactly what i’ve been saying! i was in the props department for the stage version and it struck me how much Swan’s notes read just like Charlie’s. Poor guy, but i’m pretty sure it’s 100% a reference to that story.

I encountered Swan for the first time recently at level 85 on my second playthrough. It took 6 shots from The Problem Solver to kill him.

I ran right past him in the water not knowing he was there and I heard the defeaning roar once I got halfway down the street. I turned around and unloaded my assault rifle until I got him.

The Prost Bar actually exists in Boston. It’s one of a couple bars in the USA that is modeled after the Cheers one.
The original Cheers bar that inspired the tv show is across from the Public Gardens on Beacon St. It was originally called the Bull & Finch. The outside is what they used on the show but the inside doesn't look anything like the tv show except for some decor. They have made a few other bars in the Boston area that copied the interior of the show exactly but are not near the Public Gardens. I worked there for a number of years. i don't believe there is any bar actually called Prost in Boston but quite a few with Cheers in their names.
Yeah i think the interior of the Cheers bar was designed for the set just to make it easier to film. There wasn't any bars with that exact layout before the show. That's what i've heard anyway, could be wrong.
This is correct. I visited Boston a few months back, and the Bull & Finch was the inspiration for the exterior of Cheers (according to a book explaining the correlation that the bartender gave me to read). She added the front of the bar was also used as inspiration, but they extended it outwards significantly in order to create a larger setting for the show on set. The actual Bull & Finch bar was pretty small.

Actually he's extremely easy at level 1. Just take 'big jim' with you and go ham on him b4 he pops out of the pond. The deathclaw encounter at the beginning of the game is the same deal.
It can be found in Waldon Pond right near Sanctuary Hills.
When I fought him in a low level, I went to the entrance of the station but didn't go in and started shooting him.

I learned about him the hard way, I came back with power armor and a missile lancer but still got b**ch slapped.
I always used that military vehicle for cover when fighting Swan. Usually I just nuked him and threw explosives. The first time, I went over to look at the innocent Swan boat I shot at it and I nearly shat myself!
I have never, in my many playthroughs of Fallout 4, have *never* had a problem with Swan. I have walked all around the commons and I don't think I ever woke him up.
Yeah walking about doesn't usually wake him, but there are also scripted times of day that he will already be up and active. If you enter the Commons during one of those times he'll automatically see you and attack

I didn't see the warning signs my first game. I saw the swan and Swan in VATS, but because the bar wasnt red I just walked right up to him. I was level 4 or 5. Worst mistake ever. Now I never go near the commons if I can avoid it.
I go there frequently to avoid raiders. I just stay at the road.

What you need to do with swan is once he’s aggravated, run to the station that’s near the swan location get in the space that’s right near the door and he’ll be right in front of you but can’t get to you, he can damage you with the anchor if you get to close you can beat him if you have a lotttttttt of ammo if you’re low level but that’s the trick I use to get him down easily

Logic Beats Speculation problem is for now the CC is optional but if they make enough money off of the CC chances are they'll make their future games tailored to pretty much be made it so you're practically forced to buy the contents do to designing games in such a way that its a way better option or something like that then choosing not to. Heck a lot of game companys have done this sort of thing with other concepts aswell

If memory serves, Swan was part of the first Brotherhood of Steel mission after I discovered their camp where Paladin tries to recruit the lone survivor, so they helped me take him out, which was a great way about it watching you try solo! Love the depth of narrative here. Im gonna go back and explore the common more thoroughly after watching this...

They could have added in ore "pre-war" comments from the main char, like "Oh, i used to go here, what the fuck did they do to this place?!" or "This was my favorite clothes shop, i miss thoses days now...." etc etc He/She is so quiet about how shit looks. Also, i doubt many Fallout player got the "Prost Bar" easter-egg.

If i was in the same scenario as the MC, i would be grumble over alot of things thats now dead/ruined, and atleast try to show people the real use of things.

@@ryanswanson9708 I think that may have been the very gun I used to take Swann down with: I'd retaken the Castle at around level 20 ish and proceeded to spend the next 20 levels or so working on turning the Castle into a proper main base, which, of course included getting the Old Guns quest & hepling Ronnie out...
