    If I had to guess, I would say that the Gunner mercs were established by another remnant of the U.S. military. Just like the founding of the Brotherhood of Steel, I think that a splinter faction of the Military broke away after October 23 and tried to rebuild their organization only to fall into mercenary work just to survive. It's possible that they at first were just trying to get by and after several generations forgot about their past, becoming the callous mercenary group we now see.

The Gunners in the other hand seem to be remnants of the US Army that descended to violence and mercenary work (that would explain the highly irregular chain of command, militaristic attitude and hi-end equipment).

  • @LungsOutJem
    @LungsOutJem Před 5 lety +484

    Ox, I love you man, but you missed the same thing everybody misses, the Tournquist family.
    Bonnie Tournquist was at the Mass Bay Medical Center when the bombs dropped. The Med Center survived the blast, but when members of the army found it, they took it over, forcing the medical staff to prioritize them over others. With their weapons, armor, and established hierarchy, soldiers like this all over the Wasteland were better off than your average survivor.
    In short, what happened at Mass Bay happened all over the place, and before long these disparate groups got together and organized into a mercenary organization. Cut off from the higher ranks (like the Commander in Chief) much of the U.S. Military became Gunners. In many ways, the Gunners and the Brotherhood have the same origin story, both the descendants of military survivors.

Fun fact: I took a nonlinear math course in college from the guy that wrote the original algorithm for fuel efficient trajectory stabilization in geosynchronous communication satellites. 200 years is pushing it but only if we assume the sattelites in Fallout's universe use our chemical fuels. Assuming their satellites are powered like most other large devices in Fallout (via fusion cores which seem to have infinite power til we touch them) means those comsats are likely still hanging out in the same place, sending and receiving ad infinitum..

    Our communication satellites would last for quite a while, actually. Numerous communication satellites are in geostationary orbit and require minimal adjustments per year to maintain their exact location sub centimeter location - about 22,000 miles away. Even drifting away from these positions they would last millennia.
    The very first solar powered satellite, Vanguard 1, is still in orbit being launched in 1958! Its orbital period and decay doesn't appear to re-enter the atmosphere until nearly 2200. Communication with the craft was lost in in 1964.
    The Gunners would definitely be able to use satellite communication. I think the bigger question is how would they know how to link up to them and how well those satellites would hold up after 200 years of presumed silence.

The title conscript implies they were forcefully enlisted into their ranks. This could be for a number of reasons. Someone got in debt with the gunners and needed to pay it off. Someone had became enemies with the gunners and they would have to join them in order to be spared. Another likely reason is enslavement. Gunner conscripts are possibly enslaved settlers, and other wastelanders.

      Based on what I've read, the main purpose of satellites being in orbit is to send and receive signals from specific places, as satellites are very reliant on direction given that the dish around the antenna is what bounces signals back to the antenna. I *think* they'd still work without satellites in orbit if they were set up to send and receive signals between each other on a ground level. Maybe that's the purpose of Gunner's Plaza - to take in satellite signals from all over and relay it to where they need to go? They're all big satellites which take in weaker signals, and that information could be relayed more locally via short range radios.

    Yes, Oxhorn. GNN was a HUGE missed opportunity. In our universe of reality the satellites are solar powered and some might last a couple centuries but orbits would eventually decay and the navigational boosters require finite resources in addition to electrical power. In original Fallout and Fallout 2 the power armor had a lifetime power supply. I'm sure similar tech would be used in their satellites. Given that most power in Fallout is nuclear it's more likely that it would take multiple centuries to exhaust onboard resources.

    It seems to me that the gunners origins are the other side to the same coin as the brotherhood of steel. They are the descendants of a military unit that held together after the bombs fell. They use military tactics and utilize combat technology. They fortify and hold strong points and establish forward operating bases. While the nazis has blood typed tattooed it’s not uncommon for us troops to have their blood type written some where else on their body just in case so it’s not unusual for us soldiers as well. While the brotherhood was descended mechanized power suit infantry the gunners are descended regular infantry. Picture this if you will. You’re a part of a military unit trying to maintain order after the bombs fell. There’s mass panic, rioting, looting, and people forming gangs. Your unit suffered casualties from the bombs same as everyone. The government and national infrastructure has collapsed or is in the process of collapsing. Supplies are low and you are unable to properly feed and care for your men and civilian dependents. You’re constantly under attack and mobbed for resources. Soldiers are deserting to go find their family making a rapidly deteriorating situation deteriorate faster. Seizing supplies and strategic locations, looking out for your unit first before others, strict and harsh discipline, utilizing military capability in exchange for supplies, training and incorporating civilians into the unit where possible.....these are reasonable temporary solutions a military unit could take as the country collapses around them isolating them further and further while still trying to pick up the pieces and keep the unit together, before giving up on rebuilding and focusing on holding together in a hostile environment, eventually becoming a culture unto itself.

    • @kellyoneal5498
      @kellyoneal5498 Před 6 lety +34

      That was my take on the Gunners as well... after all, once the goverment had fallen and no one was left to pay the troops, some troops would desert, some units would completely disband, some would eventually go full raider, but those that held together would have decided advantage over any small raider groups and settlements. Even if the original military survivors had no desire to prey on the other survivors, starvation makes a good argument that they needed to get hard to survive. 200 years later they maintain the trappings of a military force and culture, even if they no longer give a d@*n about protecting civilians.

      This is the right theory - Brotherhood became what it is because Roger Maxson was a good leader and managed to keep them under his command (after his superior committed suicide as Fallout 2 revealed). But Gunners come from some rogue, leaderless military unit that could've been anything among 100s of units that existed. They would've turned to banditry and gang warfare after the war. Remember - most of the first "raiders" were actually people who went looting and killing to steal food to survive, and rogues in military are especially prone to do that.
      This explains why they uphold military terminology and customs in a way that would put Talon Company or even NCR army to shame.

It was most likely cancelled because why would the BOS, Railroad, and Insitute have a reason to wipe them besides just as a small threat to complete power and why would a group of mercenaries want to stick their hand into wasteland politics when they are well off the way they are.

      BoS would want to get rid of them because gunners have plasma and laser weapons, power armor, vertibird, sentry bots and assaultrons.
      Railroad don't really have to do anything. Just like how they don't really fight with minutemen. Just not interested in each other.
      Institute... We see a courser destroying gunners. Reason: they were in the way. The courses simply wants to get to the runaway synth.
      The gunners are the most organized and powerful group in commonwealth surface until BoS arrives, which could get in the way of institute operations and gunners don't really appreciate having institute courses and gen 1 synths destroying their shit. They also probably don't like the idea of having their troops kidnapped and replaced by synths. They would recognize synths and coursers as a threat, and would carry out operations to eliminate any possible synths, which could become a hindrance to institute operations in the surface. Pretty easy why these two factions would wan't each other gone.

    I think they are descended from US army soldiers around Boston/eastern seaboard of US, which explains their strangely accurate military customs that Talon Company or even NCR army (both were made with post-war level of knowledge) did not have. Remember - there was utter chaos in the one week immediately following the great war, before the world completely died off.
    The leaderless soldiers must've captured an important military cache since there were so many of them, armed themselves and became a military-style band, who degraded into gang warfare and raiding after the war. Their descendents carried on their training and customs, but as a gang rather than an ex-military unit. Sometimes during the 8 generations of Gunners that passed over 2 centuries, they forgot their unrecorded origins and named themselves Gunners - the military-style gang we see in the game, who also started mercenary work to earn cash.

    I always thought that the Gunners might have been started by former Enclave members. Just because the Enclave were destroyed in FO3 doesn't mean that all of them were killed. The Enclave in FO:NV still had former members that were in hiding. That was out west though where the NCR, BOS and Caesar's Legion would have actively been hunting them down. Out east the BOS doesn't control much outside of its stronghold in the capital wasteland and a few other areas. So it would have been easier for former Enclave to disappear and reinvent themselves. This actually explains the gunners knowledge about much of the pre-war technology. Including the usage of satellites for communications. The Enclave had satellites that they kept in orbit over the centuries. Whose to say that former members wouldn't use those if they are aware of their existence. That also explains their possession of and ability to pilot vertibirds. And their use of a pre-war military rank structure.

They both use and hack robots, like energy weapons, have outposts in strategic locations, take contracts, etc and pretty much follow an established command structure. If anything Talon looks like a weaker offshoot of the Gunners as Talon was much weaker in the Capitol wasteland.
      And the Enclave have a lot of territory to get lost in that isn't near a major BOS base. If I had to guess, I'd say if any are left they're down south somewhere (Langley Virginia maybe? CIA headquarters. Or maybe Norfolk, which is huge naval base) An aircraft carrier beached in the harbor would suit the Enclave just fine.

    Those holes you poke in the vault origin only work if they recently escaped and that is not possible since some of the scientists in the vault during the revolt were original vault scientists. That's less than 36 years for 2 full generations of test subjects including the original school kids. If you round that up to 40 for easier math that's within the lifespan of some original scientists and 170 years before FO4 started. The original children that escaped having military knowledge and training would be perfect for the originators of the Gunner faction. Since we know they recruit from outside the group it is in the realm of possibility that the faction became more ruthless because they would recruit raiders or other ruthless mercenaries, train them basic military structure and in the 170 years the original escapees died off, their children grew up in a harsh dog eat dog world surrounded by ruthless recruits and you now have the gunners we all love to shoot.

      You're welcome. Another reason I think the gunners originating in the vault feels more correct is there is no mention of paramilitary super soldiers from a vault but there is a vault filled with paramilitary that originally created paramilitary super soldiers well over a hundred years in the past. Too much of a coincidence with the paramilitary part and the original super soldiers that escaped Vault Tec having no story after they escaped.
      My theory is the young adults and children escaped the vault and traveled south until they came to an Army supply depot in North Eastern Connecticut near the border of Massachusetts that was held by early versions of raiders, they slaughtered the pre raider leadership and forced the underlings to join them or die. Because of their knowledge of blood types and transfusions they made the pre raiders tattoo their blood type on their forehead because arms and legs could get removed in combat in spectacularly bloody ways and saving an injured soldier via a blood transfusion and emergency surgery is better than just letting them die and have to be replaced and retrained. A soldier could lose an arm and a leg or two and be beneficial as a coms officer freeing a fully limbed coms officer up for combat duty.
      They then began trading and working with any settlement in the area for trade as well as started to offer their service as guards and mercenaries. During the time that they were offering their services to the locals they were also recruiting anyone that provided the same services because they would always need fresh meat because the job of soldiering is incredibly dangerous but in the post war world it was lucrative. Eventually over 150 years they managed to master the area and the leadership were direct descendants of the original vault dwellers they wanted to move back to their ancestral home and chose to expand north where the vault lay in wait. and so they sent what they could to take the Commonwealth but ran into Minuteman opposition and clearly dug in raider gangs with pseudo organization. They played the long game and for 20 years they established themselves as the defacto merc/gunner for hire faction in stark contrast to Minutemen. They compromised The Minutemen by sowing misinformation/mistrust and getting a certain officer to betray them at the right time and place. The sole survivor awakens soon after.
      *Edit
      About the blood type brand I mentioned why they originally did it and why the on the face reason but I didn't mention why it continued even though they don't do blood transfusions anymore. They stopped doing the transfusions because they didn't have blood banks or really any way to store fresh blood but the tattoos made a nice "I am one of you for life" declaration even if they no longer suited a practical purpose. It had nothing to do with Nazi Germany but all to do with being practical (The Nazis were idiots tattooing limbs considering how easily a humans limb can be blown off from a simple grenade much less a mine or artillery and they could survive if they got the right blood but if they head was removed during the same explosion a blood type is irrelevant.) they did it because it was practical at first, and they continued when it wasn't because it was also practical for a different reason, the reason being a permanent sign of devotion.

      Jean-Luc Martel, That was what I explained and it fits with Oxhorn's view of the original escaped children/young adults. They escaped and had altruism for their group, they were family, they loved each other even if Vault Tecs indoctrination tried to prevent the love and family feelings through adversity which we all know creates those feelings when you work with non family members in extremely adverse times. Hell get a man and a woman together who have no sexual interest in each other and are "meh" when it comes to personality. Throw them into a life and death struggle they have to work together in to survive there is a huge chance that they will fall in love during and have sex well before the end of their adventure. After the danger is gone and normal life resumes that love almost always erodes and in some cases can result in hate. So basic human nature explains the altruism during the revolt and supports the vault origin theory.
      I typed that at night, in the dark and there was a fly buzzing about I tried to kill 3 times. I missed each time. Your first reason for thinking that the kids from the Vault didn't found the Gunners is extraordinarily weak. Those kids didn't exit the Vault last week. There's been a span of *200 years* since the bombs dropped; those kids could have left and founded the Gunners over a century ago. There's no reason in the world to think that this event happened recently enough that those kids, if they did found the Gunners, would still be alive by Fallout 4's time. The faction could have very easily have started with the camaraderie described in the Vault records and devolved over time to still have all the brutality and efficiency, but none of the loyalty. Hell, it's more than possible--the Fallout series has shown through practice that time can wear factions down to a mere shell of what they once were. Look at the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout: New Vegas and 4. They're a mockery of the order we see in Fallout 1, thoughtless adherents to a set of scriptures they don't think about, don't understand the spirit of. The founding of the BoS is long enough in the past that those who understood what the order was actually meant to do, and what its goals and methods were supposed to be, are all long gone, leaving nothing but rules utterly inadequate to convey the spirit they were written in. The Gunners could very well be much the same--a faction which has fallen considerably from what it used to be, where only the rules of discipline have survived, not the spirit of brotherhood that was formed from the founders' history.
    Your reasoning that the Gunners have to operate outside the Commonwealth, as well, is just as weak. We do *not* see the entirety of Massachusetts in Fallout 4. We don't even see half of it! Cypress could very well be operating from a base in the western part of the state, or a little further south of Boston than the map goes, such as the Plymouth area. There's absolutely no evidence to suggest that the Gunners do or do not operate exclusively in the Commonwealth.
    Sorry if this comes off as a bit insulting. It's just that your theories and explanations are usually so well-reasoned and intelligent, that hearing poorly thought out reasoning from you like this is very surprising.

      The Nazi blood thing is a bit off, too. They are supposed to be like soldiers, they wear 'modern' soldier's equipment universally. Soldiers sometimes (but not always) have their blood type on their person somewhere (uniform, tag, whatever). Not the most useful thing, because an army medic won't just give someone blood from somewhere else based on a piece of fabric or metal that says what type they are - unless it's an emergency and there is no chance of saving the life at a proper facility with a bank, but it's still a thing.
      The way I see it, this is just a ritualistic nod to the history of soldiering. American GIs in WW2 had their blood type on their tags, and it goes from there. I don't see how they could get access to that kind of specific information about WW2. More likely, I see them as being descendents of rogue military personnel, just like the BoS, but without the head-start. Maybe national guard or something? They use tattoos, because they're simple and you can't lose them. They probably can do blood transfusions, because they're not that hard to do (direct blood transfusions don't require much equipment or knowhow).

      The Brotherhood in Fallout 2 are barely present or developed, they're just sort of there in a couple of places (e.g. San Francisco). Fallout 1 is where the real story is, an it's mostly told through logs. Their story begins _just before_ the bombs dropped, in the Mariposa Military Base. That's what you want to be looking for. It's a really dark, interesting story and it ties in directly with the Master and the origins of the Super Mutants.

      Considering how much of a letdown Nuka-World was, I think it's fine that the developers move on. The gunners were created and persisted until the end as little more than elite mooks fit only for battle and loot besides the odd holotape or note. Maybe in the next game there will be more thought put into DLC expansions of the game to be more like Far Harbor. With that said, I am absolutely not buying the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls game if I have to build another 20 shanty-town populated by gormless npc.

      Ayylien Dude I like having a voiced protagonist. That's a preference thing. It would be cool if you could have an option to turn off the voice though. I know not everyone likes the voiced part but I also know a ton of people do.

      Exactly. Even in an organization that treats its lower ranking members poorly, they are still useful as equipment. If you don't provide medical treatment for those injured in battle, your most veteran troops die off and attrition kills off the organization as a whole.

    • @Turamwdd
      @Turamwdd Před 7 lety +6

      Fury Road provides an example in another wasteland universe. I don't think the War Boys really cared much about each other yet they turned people into Blood Bags to help keep each other alive. What is to say that the lower-level people in the organization wouldn't necessarily be used the same way, when needed, for those higher up.

    As a point about the satellites its likely that they could use either solar or more likely nuclear power. Also liberty prime uses a GPS system to navigate to the institute and recognize landmarks so that confirms that atleast one entire network of satellites are operational (and many if not most others are as well). It's a small detail I love because it opens the door for certain groups being capable of restoring national or even international communications.

    The blood type tattoo on the face is practical because if they blow up one of their limbs, the medic would still be able to get their blood type and potentially save them. if they get their heads blown off then a blood type would be obsolete information since they would be dead and what not.

    Completely agree with the gunners being a nonjoinable. It makes the world feel a bit more real when some faction won't let you join there ranks and have you run around being the leader of every faction.

    • @kivimik
      @kivimik Před 6 lety +62

      It bothers me that this supposedly mercenary faction is hostile outright to the Sole Survivor (and practically everybody else in the Commonwealth). They operate like raiders with better guns.
      Even if they're not join-able, at least give the Sole Survivor the ability to talk to them without getting shot at, or even hire them for security.

      A. You cannot be the leader of the Brotherhood of Steel
      B. You cannot be the leader of the Railroad
      The only Factions you are the leader of are the raiders in nuka-world, the Minutemen, and the Institute. Fallout isn't like Skyrim where you can become the leader of every faction (excluding the civil war stuff).

    I have a personal headcanon which started because of a mod called the "Gunner Outfit Pack" (it overhauls the appearance of the gunners and adds in new enemy types) and there was a gunner enemy I encountered called the "Gunner Special Forces" whom had defaced enclave gear. Seeing this, I came up with the headcanon/theory that the gunners were formed by enclave remnants that migrated from the capital wasteland after the events of fallout 3.

    Never answered where they come from. Still think the most likely answer is that they did come from the vault, expanded, grew, and passed down their traditions (such as the blood type tattoo) while slowly changing over time. With no pourpose, and all the skills of professional mercenaries, its possible they slowly mutated into the gunners we know and love today.

    • @flakes1972
      @flakes1972 Před 6 lety

      As Ox said, they accept people from all walks of life. That in itself could've diluted their ranks.

  • @silversnakeproductions3241

    I remember the gunners and the first time I saw them.
    I was a young lad with crappy guns running on roof tops with a power armor suit on. I jumped down and feel upon a gunner camp in the city. I was dead before I knew who the heck they were. All I saw was the name before I died.
